Chapter 13: The Memory Hidden Inside Me

The empty desk was the first thing I saw.

Not the people around me.

Not the broken silence.

Not the fear on my mother’s face.

The desk.

Because the letter was gone.

The one piece of evidence that could explain everything had disappeared in seconds.

Marcus walked toward it slowly.

“No.””

He looked around the room.

“No, no, no.””

Darius checked the hallway.

“Caleb took it.””

My father turned sharply.

“You let him?””

Darius’s expression changed.

“I didn’t.””

“You knew he was coming.””

“No.””

“You always know something.””

The anger in my father’s voice filled the room.

But Darius didn’t fight back.

Because he knew Marcus was right.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except him.

And me.

Marcus looked at me.

“Jordan.””

I already knew what he was asking.

“What do you remember?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

My father’s voice softened.

Not because he wasn’t desperate.

Because he knew desperation would only make me shut down.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time, I stopped trying to forget.

I searched through the memories I had buried.

A drawer.

A room.

My father’s office.

I was seven years old.

The smell of coffee.

The sound of rain against the windows.

My father sitting at his desk.

I remembered him looking scared.

Not angry.

Scared.

“Jordan?””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I opened my eyes.

“I remember your office.””

Everyone became still.

“What did you see?”” Marcus asked.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

I looked at him.

“I remember a folder.””

Darius stepped closer.

“What kind of folder?””

“A black one.””

My breathing changed.

“It had pictures.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“What?””

“You know what he’s talking about.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The anger returned.

“You knew he remembered?””

“No.””

“Then why are you reacting like that?””

Because she had seen it before.

Because she knew exactly what I had found.

Vanessa sat down.

“I thought those memories were gone.””

My father looked at her.

“Gone because of what?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Because of what you did.””

Nobody spoke.

My father froze.

“What did I do?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You erased them.””

Ava looked confused.

“Dad erased Jordan’s memories?””

My father shook his head.

“I would never…”

He stopped.

Because suddenly he wasn’t sure.

That scared me.

My father touched his forehead.

“I don’t remember doing that.””

Darius spoke quietly.

“Because you didn’t do it alone.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who helped me?””

Darius didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was already there.

The company.

The people who had been controlling everything.

My father looked back at me.

“What else do you remember?””

I closed my eyes again.

The memory came in pieces.

My father kneeling in front of me.

Holding my shoulders.

“Jordan, listen to me.””

Young me was crying.

“Why can’t I tell Mom?””

“Because this is important.””

“What is it?””

My father looked toward the office door.

Like someone was listening.

Then he whispered:

“You found something dangerous.””

I remembered asking:

“Are you in trouble?””

And my father saying:

“No.””

A pause.

“Not anymore.””

I opened my eyes.

“I remember something else.””

Everyone waited.

“My dad gave me something.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked around the room.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

I tried.

Then I remembered.

A small object.

Metal.

Cold.

My father had put it in my hand.

“Keep this safe.””

I had asked him:

“What is it?””

And he said:

“Something they can’t take from us.””

My eyes moved to the key.

The same key Darius had given him.

Except it wasn’t the key.

Something smaller.

Something I had hidden.

My hand moved automatically toward my necklace.

Everyone noticed.

Marcus stared.

“Jordan.””

I touched the small metal pendant hanging under my shirt.

I had worn it since I was a child.

Never knowing why.

My mother saw it.

Her face went pale.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He gave it to him.””

My father stepped closer.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“He told me never to remove it.””

I pulled the necklace off.

The pendant was small.

Simple.

Almost worthless.

But when Darius held it under the light, his expression changed.

“This isn’t jewelry.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What is it?””

Darius turned it over.

“There’s a compartment.””

My heart stopped.

Ava whispered:

“Open it.””

Darius carefully pressed the side.

A tiny piece slid out.

Inside was a small chip.

My father stared.

“All this time…”

He looked at me.

“You were carrying the evidence.””

The room went silent.

Then Darius’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What is it?””

Darius turned the phone around.

A message.

One sentence.

Your son has the final piece.

And beneath it:

Bring him to us, or Vanessa’s secret becomes public.

My father looked at my mother.

She went completely pale.

“What secret?”” he asked.

Vanessa started crying.

Because this time…

she knew she couldn’t hide anymore.

“My secret,” she whispered.

“Is that I knew who Jordan’s biological father was.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

And asked the question nobody wanted answered.

“Who is he?””
