Chapter 12: The Memory I Buried

My father couldn’t move.

The letter shook in his hands.

I had seen Marcus angry.

I had seen him scared.

I had seen him broken.

But this was different.

He looked guilty.

Like he had just discovered something about himself that he hated.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Marcus stared at the paper.

“Read it.””

Nobody spoke.

He read silently.

Then he closed his eyes.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

My father looked at her.

“It says I knew.””

The words were quiet.

“But not everything.””

Caleb watched him.

Marcus ignored him.

“What did I do?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Darius.

“You know.””

Darius looked away.

That was all it took.

Marcus turned toward him.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Darius swallowed.

“The night you disappeared…”

He paused.

“You weren’t taken.””

My father went still.

“You left.””

The room felt like it stopped breathing.

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Darius looked at me.

“Because of Jordan.””

I felt everyone’s eyes move toward me.

My father looked confused.

“Explain.””

Darius took a breath.

“You discovered the truth about Jordan’s biological parents.””

Marcus looked at me.

“And?””

“And you realized the company would never stop searching.””

Caleb interrupted.

“You made a choice.””

My father looked at him.

“What choice?””

Caleb smiled.

“The same choice you always make.””

A pause.

“You sacrificed yourself.””

Marcus looked down.

The letter slipped slightly in his hand.

The memory was coming back.

I could see it.

The pain.

The confusion.

The pieces connecting.

“I remember…”

Everyone froze.

My father touched his forehead.

“I remember the room.””

Darius stepped closer.

“What room?””

“A hospital.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“There was a man.””

Caleb smiled.

“Your doctor.””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“He wasn’t a doctor.””

The room went silent.

“He was working for them.””

Darius nodded.

“Yes.””

My father’s breathing changed.

“They told me I had to disappear.””

Caleb smiled.

“But that wasn’t the whole truth.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Caleb didn’t answer.

My father looked at the letter.

Then suddenly, he read one sentence aloud.

“I created a false death record myself.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked shocked.

“You did?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I thought it was the only way.””

He looked at me.

“To protect Jordan.””

My chest tightened.

Caleb shook his head.

“You see?””

He looked at me.

“He chose you.””

Marcus ignored him.

“What else does the letter say?””

He kept reading.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

She froze.

“Knew what?””

Marcus held up the letter.

“It says you found out before I disappeared.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I did.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you asked me not to.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Marcus stared.

“I asked you?””

She nodded.

“You said if your memory was ever damaged, if they ever made you forget…”

Her voice broke.

“You told me not to bring you back into it.””

My father looked devastated.

Because he remembered.

“I told you to let me stay gone.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

All these years.

The lie wasn’t created because nobody cared.

It was created because someone did.

But that didn’t make it hurt less.

Ava stepped forward.

“So Dad was protecting Jordan?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava looked at me.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Caleb did.

“Because Jordan isn’t just a witness.””

He stepped closer.

“He has the original evidence.””

My father looked at him.

“What evidence?””

Caleb smiled.

“The evidence your parents died protecting.””

I felt cold.

“I don’t have anything.””

Caleb looked at me.

“You do.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He pointed at my head.

“The memory.””

My father froze.

“What memory?””

Caleb smiled.

“The one Marcus removed.””

Nobody spoke.

My father looked at me.

“You don’t remember?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Caleb nodded.

“Exactly.””

He walked toward the door.

“But you will.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where are you going?””

Caleb stopped.

“Because now that you remember…”

He looked back.

“Everyone who wanted you dead knows you’re awake.””

The lights flickered.

Then the power went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Ava screamed.

My father grabbed us.

“Stay close.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

Not one person.

Several.

Darius whispered:

“They’re here.””

Marcus looked toward the darkness.

Then he looked at us.

At me.

At Ava.

And for the first time…

I saw him make the same decision he made eleven years ago.

Protect his family.

No matter the cost.

The footsteps got closer.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Marcus Reed.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The voice answered:

“The person who knows what Jordan really saw.””

And then the lights came back on.

But Caleb was gone.

May you like

And on the desk…

the letter was missing.
