Chapter 11: The Father Who Came Back from the Dead

Detective Bennett took Daniel's phone and instructed the communications team to preserve the call information.

“Don't call back,” she said.

“We don't know whether he's monitoring her phone.””

Daniel looked toward the hotel.

“Then let me go inside.””

“No.””

“He has my wife.””

“And if he sees you coming, he may move her.””

Arthur placed a hand on Daniel's shoulder.

“Listen to the detective.””

Daniel turned toward him, anger flashing in his eyes.

“You heard him. Richard is alive. He's been threatening us for weeks, and now he's holding Vanessa. How much more do we need?””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“We need her alive. That's what matters.””

Daniel looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

Detective Bennett spoke into her radio, requesting confirmation from the officers watching the hotel.

A minute later, a response came through.

“No visible movement at the main entrance. Rear service corridor is clear. One vehicle arrived six minutes ago.””

“What kind of vehicle?”” Bennett asked.

“A dark sedan. Registered to a company called Westbridge Consulting.””

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“Marcus.””

“Possibly,” Bennett replied.

“We're verifying the registration.””

Arthur stared at the hotel windows.

The building had once been one of the city's most fashionable places to conduct business. He remembered attending a charity dinner there with Margaret, years before Daniel was born.

Richard had been there that night, too.

He remembered the two of them laughing over drinks, discussing plans for their future.

He remembered believing that no amount of money could destroy a friendship built on decades of trust.

Now Richard was somewhere inside the same building, using Arthur's son and daughter-in-law as leverage.

Arthur felt the old anger rising.

But beneath it was something else.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Daniel.

At 11:04 p.m., Detective Bennett received a call from the hotel's night manager.

A man had checked into a private meeting suite under the name Richard Reed.

The booking had been made three days earlier.

The manager confirmed that the man had entered alone, but security footage showed another person arriving through the service entrance.

A woman.

Vanessa.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Can you get us into the room?””

“Not yet,” Bennett replied.

“We need to establish who is inside and whether there are weapons.””

“What if he leaves?””

“We have officers covering the exits.””

Arthur looked at the detective.

“Richard is experienced at making people believe they have no choice. He won't necessarily use a weapon. He'll use whatever gives him control.””

Bennett studied him.

“You know him well?””

“I used to.””

“Then tell me what to expect.””

Arthur considered the question.

“Richard doesn't threaten people unless he believes the threat will work. He'll offer a reasonable explanation for something unreasonable. He'll make you feel that you're the one being unfair.””

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“That sounds familiar.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Vanessa?””

Daniel nodded.

Bennett listened carefully.

“Then we don't negotiate with him. We focus on getting your wife out safely.””

At 11:16 p.m., the hotel manager called again.

The private suite's door had opened.

A man matching Richard Reed's description had stepped into the corridor and spoken to a member of staff. He had asked whether the hotel's meeting rooms were being monitored.

The employee said yes.

Richard had smiled and returned to the room.

Arthur's face tightened.

“He knows someone is watching.””

“Then we move now,” Bennett said.

She issued instructions over the radio.

Two officers entered through the lobby while another team moved toward the service corridor. Bennett and a second detective approached the private meeting suite with Arthur and Daniel following at a distance.

They reached the door at 11:24 p.m.

Bennett knocked.

“Police. Open the door.””

Silence.

She knocked again.

“Mr. Reed, we need to speak with you.””

A chair scraped inside.

Then Richard's voice came through the door.

“Arthur. I wondered how long it would take you.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“Let Vanessa leave.””

Richard laughed softly.

“Still giving orders, Arthur? After all these years?””

“Open the door.””

“Why don't you come inside? We have so much to discuss.””

Detective Bennett signaled to the officers.

“Open it,” she ordered.

The door swung inward.

The suite was empty.

A lamp glowed beside the sofa. Two glasses sat on the coffee table. A half-finished cup of tea had gone cold.

Vanessa stood near the window.

She was alone.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Vanessa!””

She stumbled into his arms, gripping his jacket with both hands.

For a moment, he held her tightly.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No. No, I'm okay.””

“Where is he?””

Vanessa pointed toward the adjoining door.

“He went through there.””

The officers moved immediately.

The adjoining room opened onto a narrow service corridor. At the far end, a door swung shut.

One officer ran after him.

Another remained with Vanessa.

Daniel held his wife's shoulders.

“What happened?””

Vanessa was shaking so badly that she could barely speak.

“He wanted the guarantee. He said if I gave it to him, he'd let me go.””

“Did you give it to him?””

She nodded.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why?””

“Because he said he'd tell you the truth about your mother.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You gave him the only document that could prove he forged the original?””

“I thought I could get it back.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I thought if I cooperated, he'd let me leave.””

Daniel stared at her.

Then he noticed something in her hand.

A small black flash drive.

“What is that?””

Vanessa closed her fingers around it.

“Evidence.””

Daniel looked at her sharply.

“What evidence?””

“Records from Marcus's office. Emails, bank statements, and copies of the property transfers. I took them before I came here.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I didn't know whether I could trust anyone.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel released her shoulders.

“You didn't trust me?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Not after what I did.””

Before he could answer, Detective Bennett returned from the corridor.

“We lost him at the service exit. A vehicle was waiting outside.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“Richard escaped.””

“Yes. But we have the vehicle's registration and a partial description of the driver.””

Bennett looked at Vanessa.

“We'll need your statement. And we need to know why you were here.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I'll tell you everything.””

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

“Everything?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

They returned to Carter Holdings just after midnight.

The office was bright with fluorescent lights, and the conference room smelled of stale coffee. Nia had stayed behind to secure the company's electronic records, while Evelyn was waiting with a lawyer who had agreed to assist with the emergency filings.

Vanessa placed the flash drive on the table.

“I took it from Marcus's office this afternoon,” she said.

“I didn't know what was on it until I opened a few files.””

Nia connected the drive to a separate computer.

The first folder contained banking records.

The second contained correspondence between Marcus and Richard.

The third was labeled *CARTER SUCCESSION*.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Open it.””

Nia clicked.

A scanned legal agreement appeared.

It outlined a proposed transfer of control over Carter Holdings to a new management company, with Marcus Reed appointed as managing director.

The agreement included a provision that would take effect if Arthur were declared mentally incapacitated or if his ownership were successfully challenged.

Arthur read the clause twice.

“This is why they staged the accusation.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Marcus said it would be easier to take control if people believed your father couldn't be trusted.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“And you helped him create that belief.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because Marcus told me something about your mother that made me believe your father had been lying to you for years.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“What did he tell you?””

She took a shaky breath.

“He said Margaret had written a second will. One that named Richard as your biological father and gave him control over your inheritance.””

Arthur stared at her.

“That's impossible.””

“Marcus showed me a copy.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't know. He said the original was with Richard.””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“Was the document dated?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Three days before Margaret died.””

Arthur felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

Three days before Margaret died, she had been in hospital, barely conscious.

She could not have signed a complicated legal document without assistance.

And yet someone had apparently created a will bearing her name.

Nia opened another file.

“There's a scan here.””

The room fell silent.

The document appeared on the screen.

At the top was Margaret's full name.

At the bottom was her signature.

But the witness signatures were different.

Arthur recognized one immediately.

It belonged to Richard Reed.

The second belonged to Evelyn Shaw.

Evelyn went pale.

“I never witnessed this document.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Your signature is on it.””

“I know. But I didn't sign it.””

Arthur looked at the screen.

“Then Richard forged both our names.””

Evelyn's voice shook.

“Apparently.””

Nia scrolled to the final page.

There was a handwritten note attached to the document.

The truth about Daniel must remain hidden until the original guarantee is recovered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur read the sentence again.

The implication was clear.

The forged will was not merely about inheritance.

It was a tool to force them to surrender the guarantee before they could examine the truth about Daniel's birth.

Richard had built the entire scheme around one secret.

But why?

Daniel looked at his father.

“There's something we're missing.””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then she stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“There's something Marcus told me that I didn't believe until tonight.””

“Tell me.””

“He said Richard wasn't the only person who wanted your mother's money.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“Who else?””

Vanessa looked directly at Daniel.

“Your mother had a sister.””

Daniel frowned.

“No. Mom was an only child.””

“That is what she told you.””

Arthur stood motionless.

Margaret had never mentioned a sister.

Not once in thirty-five years of marriage.

Vanessa continued, her voice trembling.

“Marcus said her name was Helen. He claimed she had been cut out of the family years before Daniel was born.””

Evelyn slowly lowered herself into a chair.

“Oh, God.””

Arthur turned toward her.

“You know that name?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Helen Carter wasn't Margaret's sister.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then who was she?””

Evelyn looked at Arthur.

“She was Margaret's daughter.””

The room went silent.

Arthur gripped the edge of the desk.

“Margaret had another child?””

“Before she met you,” Evelyn replied.

“A daughter she gave up for adoption. Richard found out about her years later.””

Daniel's face had gone completely white.

“Does Helen know about all this?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Arthur looked at the documents, at the forged signatures, at the evidence of a life he had never known his wife had lived.

Then Nia opened one final file.

It contained a scanned birth record.

The mother's name was Margaret Carter.

The child's name was Helen Reed.

And beneath the entry, someone had added a note in red ink.

*Current legal beneficiary of the original Carter family trust.*

Arthur stared at the words.

Daniel whispered, “If Helen is the beneficiary, what does that make me?””

No one answered.

Because at that moment, the office phone rang.

Nia picked it up.

She listened for several seconds, then slowly covered the receiver.

“Mr. Carter,” she said.

Arthur looked up.

“It's the bank's legal department.””

“What do they want?””

Nia's voice trembled.

“They've received a claim from a woman named Helen Reed.””

May you like

She paused.

“She says Carter Holdings has been holding her inheritance for twenty-five years.””
