Chapter 3: The Money Behind the Lie

Daniel read the authorization form three times.

The first time, he looked for a mistake.

The second time, he searched for an explanation.

By the third, he could no longer pretend the signatures were harmless errors.

Arthur Carter's name was printed neatly beneath the approval line. The signature above it looked convincing at first glance, but something about the final stroke seemed wrong.

Daniel knew his father's handwriting. He had watched Arthur sign birthday cards, school permission slips, loan documents, and the deed to the house where Daniel had grown up.

This signature was close.

Too close.

His own name was beneath it, written with the same exaggerated curve he had used since college.

But Daniel had never signed the form.

He looked at Nia.

“Who submitted this?””

“The request came through the company's online banking portal eleven days ago,” she replied.

“The bank rejected the larger transfer because the second authorization didn't match the verification record.””

“And the three thousand dollars?””

“That transfer cleared two days earlier.””

Daniel lowered the paper.

“Where did it go?””

Nia hesitated.

“An account belonging to a company called Westbridge Consulting.””

“Never heard of it.””

“Neither had I. That's why I started checking.””

Vanessa appeared in the doorway again, now wearing a tailored black dress and carrying her handbag.

“Are you seriously discussing company finances while I'm standing here?”” she asked.

Daniel didn't look up.

“Yes.””

“I'm your wife.””

“And that doesn't make a forged signature acceptable.””

Her face tightened.

“You don't know that anything was forged.””

“Then help us understand it.””

“I don't know anything about these accounts!””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Then why did you look terrified when Nia mentioned the signatures?””

“I was shocked.””

“You were about to leave the room.””

“Because you're interrogating me!””

Nia quietly gathered the other documents into a stack.

“I think Mr. Carter should be present for this conversation.””

Daniel nodded.

“Get Dad, please.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The word came out sharp enough to silence everyone.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why not?””

“Because he's already angry with me. Bringing him down here will make this worse.””

“Worse for whom?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

For several seconds, she stared at Daniel as if she had never seen him before.

Then she laughed once, a brittle, disbelieving sound.

“Unbelievable. One video, and suddenly I'm the villain.””

“You staged an assault accusation against my father.””

“I apologized!””

“You haven't spoken to him.””

“I said I would!””

“And now we have a suspicious bank transfer with both our signatures on it.””

Vanessa placed her handbag on the sofa.

“Fine. Bring him down. Let's all sit together and let him tell everyone how terrible I am.””

Daniel ignored her.

Nia went upstairs.

A minute later, Arthur appeared at the top of the staircase, dressed in the same navy trousers and white shirt he had worn the night before. His silver hair was neatly combed, but his face looked older than Daniel remembered.

He paused when he saw Vanessa.

“Am I allowed downstairs now?”” he asked.

Daniel winced.

“Dad, I'm sorry.””

Arthur studied him.

“For what?””

“For last night. I should have listened to you.””

Arthur's eyes dropped briefly to the authorization form in Daniel's hand.

“What happened?””

Daniel crossed the room and handed him the paper.

Arthur adjusted his glasses.

He read the amount first.

Then the account number.

Finally, he examined the signature.

His face changed.

“Who gave the bank permission to transfer this money?””

“Nobody we can identify yet,” Nia answered.

“The request was rejected, but the smaller payment went through.””

Arthur placed the document on the desk.

“Three thousand dollars from the reserve account.””

“Yes.””

“And a request for two hundred and forty thousand dollars.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Two hundred and forty thousand?””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“That account holds the funds we use for property taxes, repairs, and payroll. A transfer of that size would have left several buildings short of their operating reserves.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Perhaps there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.””

Arthur turned toward her.

“Then I would be delighted to hear it.””

Her chin lifted.

“Don't speak to me like I'm a criminal.””

“I haven't called you one.””

“Not yet.””

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“Son, when did you last authorize a company payment?””

“Last month. A routine payment to our insurance provider. I approved it in person at the office.””

“And did you sign this?””

“No.””

Arthur tapped the paper.

“Neither did I.””

Nia placed a second document beside it.

“This is the record from the bank's verification department. The rejected transfer was flagged because the signature didn't match the one on file. The bank requested confirmation from Mr. Carter before proceeding.””

Arthur read the note carefully.

“Who received the request?””

“It was sent to the company office. I found it in the accounting inbox yesterday.””

“Why wasn't I informed?””

Nia looked uncomfortable.

“Someone marked the message as resolved.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Nia turned her laptop around.

“The system records the employee account that changed the status.””

She clicked twice.

A name appeared on the screen.

*Vanessa Carter.*

The room fell silent.

Vanessa stared at the display.

Then she looked at Nia.

“You have no right to access my employee account.””

“You were added as an administrative user last year,” Nia replied.

“Your account was used to close the bank's verification request.””

“I didn't do that.””

“The system log shows the request was marked resolved at 9:12 a.m. on the same day the bank sent it.””

“I said I didn't do it!””

Arthur took off his glasses.

“Vanessa, why would your account be used to close a verification request involving my signature?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Are you going to let him accuse me like this?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He was beginning to understand that every time Vanessa was asked a direct question, she tried to make the question itself seem cruel.

“Just answer him,” Daniel said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can't believe you're taking their side.””

“Whose side should I take? The side of the evidence?””

She flinched.

Then she reached for her handbag.

Arthur moved between her and the door.

“Please don't leave until we understand what happened.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Move.””

“No.””

“You can't keep me here.””

“I'm not keeping you here. The door is unlocked. But if you leave, I will ask the bank to freeze the account, and I will report the suspicious transactions.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You would destroy your own family over money?””

Arthur's expression remained steady.

“No. Someone has already put my family at risk by using my name. I intend to find out who.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked ready to scream again.

Instead, she sat down.

Daniel pulled out the chair opposite her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She stared at the polished surface of the desk.

“I was given access to the company accounts because you said you wanted me to help with the business.””

“I gave you access to review invoices,” Arthur replied.

“Not to approve transfers.””

“I was trying to help.””

“By transferring money to Westbridge Consulting?””

“I don't know what that company is.””

Nia opened another tab on her laptop.

“Actually, I found its registration record.””

She turned the screen toward Daniel.

Westbridge Consulting had been incorporated eighteen months earlier. Its registered address was a small office suite in a commercial building across town.

Daniel read the document.

“Who owns it?””

Nia hesitated.

“The public record lists a managing director.””

“Who?””

She clicked the ownership disclosure.

Daniel's mouth went dry.

The director's name was *Marcus Reed*.

Vanessa's former fiancé.

Daniel knew the name because he had found it on an old photograph in Vanessa's apartment shortly before their wedding. When he asked about it, she told him Marcus had been a mistake from her past and that they hadn't spoken in years.

He looked at his wife.

“You told me Marcus moved to California.””

“He did.””

“Then why is his name on a company receiving our money?””

“I don't know!””

Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“Stop saying that!””

Vanessa rose, too.

“Don't shout at me!””

“Then give me one answer that makes sense!””

Arthur raised a hand.

“Both of you, sit down.””

Daniel obeyed, though his chest was rising and falling rapidly.

Arthur remained standing.

“Vanessa, I'm going to ask you one question. You may answer it honestly, and we can decide what to do next.””

She looked at him warily.

“What?””

“Did you know Marcus Reed was connected to Westbridge Consulting?””

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward the laptop.

It was a tiny movement.

But everyone saw it.

Arthur nodded slowly.

“I thought so.””

“You don't understand,” she whispered.

“Then explain it.””

She pressed her hands together.

“Marcus contacted me months ago. He said he was starting a consulting business and needed someone who understood property management. He asked me to introduce him to potential clients.””

“Did you introduce him to our company?”” Daniel asked.

“He said he had experience with commercial properties. I thought he could help.””

“Did you send him money?””

“No.””

Nia quietly turned the laptop toward her.

“The three-thousand-dollar payment went to his company.””

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“I didn't authorize that payment.””

“Then who did?”” Daniel asked.

She didn't answer.

Arthur pulled a chair closer to the desk and sat down.

“Vanessa, this has gone far beyond a disagreement between family members. If someone has used our signatures, we need to know how they obtained them.””

Vanessa's face had become pale.

“I didn't forge anything.””

Arthur watched her carefully.

“Then perhaps someone used documents you had access to.””

“I don't know.””

“Who had access to my signature?””

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the desk.

Finally, her gaze settled on Daniel.

“I might know something.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Three weeks ago, Marcus asked me to scan some company documents for him. He said he needed examples of our property-management procedures for a proposal.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“What documents?””

“Bank forms. Old authorizations. Some copies of signatures.””

Daniel pushed his chair back.

“You gave him copies of our signatures?””

“I didn't know he would use them!””

Arthur closed his eyes briefly.

The betrayal was no longer confined to the hallway.

It had followed him into the bank, into his company, and into the very documents that protected the business he had spent his life building.

“Why didn't you tell us when the bank flagged the transfer?”” he asked.

Vanessa began crying again.

But this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.

“I was scared,” she whispered.

“Of what?”” Daniel asked.

She looked at him, and for the first time, her fear seemed genuine.

“Marcus told me the money was only a temporary loan. He said he would return it before anyone noticed. But when I tried to contact him yesterday, his phone was disconnected.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew about the money yesterday?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Arthur slowly stood.

“And you staged that scene in the hallway to make my son believe I was dangerous.””

“I was desperate!””

“You wanted Daniel to distrust me.””

“I didn't know what else to do!””

Arthur's voice dropped.

“You could have told the truth.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“You don't understand what Marcus has on me.””

Daniel's anger gave way to something colder.

“What does he have on you?””

She looked at him.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded envelope.

“I received this two days ago.””

She placed it on the desk.

Arthur opened it carefully.

Inside was a printed bank statement, a photograph of Vanessa standing outside a downtown office building, and a handwritten note.

The note contained only one sentence.

If you want your husband to remain safe, make sure Arthur Carter cannot stop the transfer.

Daniel read it over his father's shoulder.

His face drained of color.

Arthur turned the photograph over.

On the back, someone had written a date and a time.

Tomorrow. 10:00 a.m.

Beneath it was an address.

Arthur recognized the building immediately.

It was the headquarters of Carter Holdings.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why would Marcus threaten me?””

Vanessa began to cry in earnest.

“I don't know.””

Arthur studied the handwriting.

Then he looked at the bank statement again.

The account number belonged to a company he had never heard of.

But the last four digits were familiar.

They matched an old account Arthur had closed nearly fifteen years earlier after a trusted business partner disappeared with a substantial sum of money.

A partner who had once been his closest friend.

A partner named *Richard Reed*.

Arthur looked up slowly.

“Daniel,” he said, his voice suddenly unsteady, “Marcus isn't the only person we need to find.””

He turned the photograph over one more time.

Because beneath the threatening note, almost hidden by the fold in the paper, was a second line written in the same handwriting.

And for the first time in forty years, Arthur Carter realized that the lie destroying his family might have begun long before Vanessa ever walked into his house.
