Chapter 8: The Name on the Birth Certificate

Daniel read the sentence until the words blurred.

The boy was never his.

He placed the document on the table with deliberate care.

Then he walked out of the bank's private room.

Arthur followed him into the corridor.

“Daniel, wait.””

Daniel kept walking.

“Please, son.””

He stopped beside a large window overlooking the street. Below them, people crossed the wet pavement carrying shopping bags and umbrellas, unaware that a family was coming apart behind the bank's polished walls.

“Was I ever your son?”” Daniel asked.

Arthur stood beside him.

“You have been my son every day of your life.””

“That's not the same as answering the question.””

“I know.””

Daniel turned.

“If Richard is my biological father, does that change anything for you?””

Arthur stared at him in disbelief.

“Nothing.””

“Not even a little?””

“No.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You raised me because you thought I was yours.””

“I raised you because you were a child who needed a father. I loved you before you could speak, before you could walk, before you even knew my name.””

Arthur paused, struggling to keep his voice steady.

“When your mother was in labor, I stood outside that hospital room praying you would both survive. When you were born, I held you and promised I would protect you. No document can take those moments away from me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I accused you of something terrible.””

“Yes.””

“I believed Vanessa over you.””

“Yes.””

“I don't know how to make that right.””

Arthur placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Start by finding out the truth. Then decide what kind of man you want to be.””

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“What about the birth certificate?””

“We'll have it examined. We won't accept Richard's handwriting as proof of anything.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then he looked at the document again.

“If he's my biological father, he could use that against us.””

“Perhaps that's what he wants.””

“Why?””

Arthur glanced at the bank's private room.

“Because he knows the truth about your mother could hurt us. And he thinks pain will make us surrender.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Then we're not surrendering.””

For the first time that day, Arthur saw something familiar in his son's face.

Not anger.

Resolve.

They returned home just after four in the afternoon.

Vanessa was waiting in the kitchen.

She stood beside the island with her phone pressed between both hands. When Daniel entered, she immediately approached him.

“Where have you been?””

Daniel set the envelope on the counter.

“At the bank.””

Her eyes dropped to the brass key.

“You opened the box.””

“Yes.””

She looked at Arthur.

“What did you find?””

Arthur studied her carefully.

“Why do you ask?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Marcus said your wife had hidden something.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew about the box?””

“No.””

“Then how did Marcus know?””

“He told me your mother had left documents that could destroy your family.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn't know what he meant.””

“You've been working with him for a year. You helped him access the company records. You knew about the suspicious transfer. Yet you expect me to believe you never asked why he was targeting my father?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I thought he wanted money.””

“He wanted the original guarantee. He wanted my mother's investment records. He knew about a secret involving my birth.””

She went completely still.

Daniel noticed.

“Say something.””

Vanessa looked at Arthur.

Then she looked away.

“I knew about the affair.””

Daniel felt the words like a slap.

Arthur's face became expressionless.

“How long have you known?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Marcus told me six months before our wedding.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“He said it would destroy you.””

“So you decided to keep it secret?””

“I thought I was protecting you!””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That's what everyone says when they decide they know what's best for me.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me. Marcus told me Richard was your biological father. He said your father had known all along and had hidden it from you.””

Arthur stared at her.

“That is a lie.””

“I didn't know that.””

“You could have asked me.””

“You never told me anything about your past!””

“Because my past was none of your business until you made it your weapon.””

Vanessa recoiled.

Daniel placed both hands on the kitchen island.

“What else did Marcus tell you?””

She looked at the floor.

“He said the original guarantee gave Richard control over certain assets. He said if your father died or became legally incapacitated, Richard could challenge the ownership structure of Carter Holdings.””

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“Who told you about the incapacitation clause?””

“Marcus.””

“And what did he ask you to do?””

Vanessa began crying again.

“He said I needed to make your father look unstable. If the family believed he had become dangerous, you might have had to take over his financial affairs.””

Daniel stared at her.

The hallway.

The scream.

The carefully torn blouse.

The performance had never been about a moment of panic.

It had been designed to make Arthur appear unfit to control his own affairs.

“You were trying to have Dad declared incompetent?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“Marcus said it was only a precaution. He wanted to make sure your father couldn't interfere with the transfer.””

Arthur's voice was cold.

“You were prepared to destroy my reputation so a man you once planned to marry could take control of my company.””

“I didn't know he would go this far!””

“You knew enough to participate.””

Vanessa pressed her hands over her face.

Daniel looked at her for a long time.

“Did you ever love me?””

She lowered her hands.

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

“Because I wanted a life with you. A real life. Not one where your father controlled every decision.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You could have built that life with me. You didn't have to destroy the man who raised me.””

Vanessa reached for his hand.

He moved away.

“Don't.””

She stood frozen.

Daniel picked up the documents.

“I'm going to the company office. Dad and I are freezing every account you can access. Then we're turning the evidence over to the authorities.””

Vanessa's face went white.

“You can't do that.””

“I can.””

“If you do, Marcus will come after us.””

“Then we'll deal with him legally.””

“You don't understand what he knows!””

Daniel stopped.

“What does he know?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

For several seconds, she seemed to be deciding whether to speak.

Then she whispered, “There's something else.””

Arthur turned toward her.

“What?””

Vanessa took her phone from her pocket and opened a message thread.

She handed it to Daniel.

The most recent message was from Marcus.

Get the original guarantee before tomorrow. If Arthur refuses, tell Daniel about the second beneficiary.

Daniel scrolled upward.

There were dozens of messages.

Some discussed the company accounts. Others mentioned the old investment records, the bank's verification process, and the forged signatures.

Then Daniel found a message sent three weeks earlier.

The boy's biological identity is only one part of the arrangement. The inheritance documents are what matter. Once the original guarantee is recovered, everything returns to its rightful owner.

Daniel looked up.

“What second beneficiary?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Arthur took the phone and examined the messages.

A name appeared in an older conversation.

*Evelyn Shaw.*

Below it was a photograph of a legal document.

Arthur enlarged the image.

The document was an amended trust agreement, dated three months before Margaret died.

The original beneficiary was Daniel Carter.

The amended agreement listed two beneficiaries.

Daniel Carter.

And Marcus Reed.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Why would Marcus be a beneficiary of my mother's trust?””

Arthur studied the document.

“Because someone changed the agreement.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Marcus said the original trust had been created to protect you. He said his name was added later as compensation for Richard's losses.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“Compensation for what?””

“He said Richard had invested money into your future.””

Arthur looked at her.

“Richard stole Margaret's money, then claimed he was entitled to a share of the trust created with it.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I didn't know that.””

Arthur handed the phone back to Daniel.

“Then you should have asked questions before helping him.””

Daniel looked at the amended trust again.

The signature beneath Margaret's name appeared to be genuine at first glance.

But the date was wrong.

Margaret had been hospitalized that week, unable to hold a pen without assistance.

Daniel turned to his father.

“We need to find Evelyn.””

Arthur nodded.

“She's the only person who can explain how this document was filed.””

Before they could move, the doorbell rang.

Nia entered the kitchen a moment later, carrying a thick folder.

“Mr. Carter, I checked the company archive against the property ownership records. There's a problem.””

Arthur looked up.

“What kind of problem?””

Nia placed the folder on the island.

“Westbridge Consulting isn't just receiving money from the company. It's been acquiring shares in three of your commercial properties through a series of shell companies.””

Daniel stared at the documents.

“How much of the company do they control?””

“Not the company itself. The properties.””

She pointed to a list of addresses.

“Once the transfers are completed, Westbridge will own a controlling interest in the buildings that generate most of Carter Holdings' rental income.””

Arthur's expression darkened.

“Who approved the transfers?””

Nia hesitated.

“The signatures are attributed to you and Daniel.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never approved them.””

“Neither did I,” Arthur replied.

Nia opened the final page.

“The transfers are scheduled to become effective tomorrow morning.””

Arthur checked the time.

4:37 p.m.

They had less than eighteen hours.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Marcus isn't trying to recover a debt.””

Arthur folded the documents.

“No.””

“He's trying to take the company.””

Arthur nodded.

“And if we don't stop him, he'll have the legal paperwork to claim he owns it.””

Daniel looked toward the front door, where Vanessa stood silently watching them.

For the first time, he understood that his marriage had become part of a much larger scheme.

But he still didn't know whether Vanessa had been a willing participant from the beginning.

Or whether she had discovered the truth too late to escape.

Then her phone vibrated.

A new message appeared on the screen.

She read it and let out a small, terrified sound.

Daniel took the phone from her.

The message contained a photograph of their house.

It had been taken from the street less than a minute earlier.

May you like

Beneath it were seven words.

*Bring the original guarantee, or your father pays.*
