Chapter 9: The Trap at Carter Holdings
Arthur read the message twice.
Then he walked to the front window and pulled the curtain aside.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
Its engine was running.
A man sat behind the wheel, watching the house.
Arthur released the curtain.
“Daniel, call the police and report the threat. Nia, save that message and back up every document you've collected.””
Daniel was already reaching for his phone.
Vanessa stood beside the kitchen island, pale and shaking.
“Marcus said he wouldn't hurt anyone.””
Arthur turned toward her.
“You still believe what he says?””
“He told me the threats were only meant to scare you.””
“Then he should have thought about that before photographing my house and threatening my family.””
Daniel finished the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.
“The police are sending someone to take a report. They advised us not to confront the person outside.””
“Good,” Arthur said.
“We'll follow that advice.””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Marcus won't stop.””
Arthur picked up Margaret's blue folder.
“Neither will I.””
At 7:15 p.m., Arthur gathered everyone in the study.
Daniel sat beside him. Nia stood near the desk with her laptop open. Vanessa remained by the doorway, uncertain whether she was still welcome in the room.
Arthur placed three documents on the desk.
The original limited guarantee.
The altered guarantee.
And the amended trust agreement bearing Margaret's name.
“These documents are the center of everything,” he said.
“If Richard can establish that the altered guarantee is valid, he can claim I owe him money. If he can enforce the trust agreement, he can claim an interest in the funds Margaret intended for Daniel.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“And the property transfers?””
“They appear to rely on the same forged authorizations. If we can prove the signatures were falsified, we can challenge them before they become effective.””
Nia opened a spreadsheet.
“I've identified the companies involved in the property transfers. Each one was registered within the past six months. All three list the same registered agent.””
“Who?”” Arthur asked.
“Evelyn Shaw.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She helped hide Richard's old demand letter. Why would she still be working with him?””
“Fear,” Arthur said.
“Money. Loyalty. I don't know yet.””
Vanessa finally stepped into the room.
“I can help.””
Daniel looked at her.
“How?””
“I know where Marcus keeps his business records.””
Arthur folded his arms.
“Why didn't you mention that earlier?””
“Because I didn't realize how much he was doing. I thought he wanted the money transferred, and then he would leave us alone.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You knew he wanted the money.””
“I knew about the three thousand dollars. I thought it was a loan.””
“And the two hundred and forty thousand?””
“I didn't know about that until this morning.””
Arthur studied her.
“What business records are you talking about?””
“Marcus rented an office near the river. He kept a filing cabinet there. When we were together, he used to store contracts in it. I saw the address in one of his messages.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Do you still have access to the office?””
“No. But I know the building manager.””
Arthur shook his head.
“We're not sending you anywhere near Marcus.””
“Then you'll never find the evidence.””
“We'll obtain it through lawful channels.””
Vanessa's frustration spilled over.
“You don't have time! The property transfers take effect tomorrow morning!””
Arthur held her gaze.
“Then we move quickly without making another mistake.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Please. Let me do something right.””
Daniel said nothing.
Finally, Arthur spoke.
“You can write down everything you know about Marcus, the office, and the documents you saw. Then you'll give that statement to the police.””
Vanessa nodded.
It was not forgiveness.
But it was the first time anyone had offered her a way to help without allowing her to control the situation.
At 8:02 p.m., Evelyn Shaw arrived at Carter Holdings.
Arthur had asked her to come directly to the office after she confirmed she had located additional files from Richard's original legal case.
She entered the conference room carrying a document box.
Daniel closed the door behind her.
“You've got a lot to explain,” he said.
Evelyn placed the box on the table.
“I know.””
Arthur sat opposite her.
“Start with the guarantee.””
Evelyn removed a folder and opened it.
“The original guarantee was limited to the amount necessary to protect Richard's wife and child from losing their home. Richard later produced a different version that made Arthur responsible for a much larger debt.””
“Who changed it?”” Daniel asked.
“I believe Richard did. But I cannot prove it without the original document.””
Arthur placed Margaret's letter on the table.
“She knew he was trying to move her money before she died.””
Evelyn read the letter in silence.
Then she closed her eyes.
“I should have listened to her.””
“Why didn't you?”” Arthur asked.
“Because Richard threatened to expose my involvement in the original guarantee. I had witnessed Arthur sign the limited version, but I failed to ensure the signed copy was properly recorded. When Richard presented the altered document, I knew something was wrong.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was afraid.””
Arthur leaned forward.
“You let me spend twenty-five years believing that I had lost control of my company because I was careless. You allowed me to believe Richard had simply disappeared with the money.””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“I thought he would eventually leave you alone.””
“He didn't.””
“No.””
“Instead, he came after my son.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“I never intended that.””
Daniel's voice was cold.
“Intentions didn't stop you from helping him.””
Evelyn accepted the accusation without protest.
Then she opened another folder.
“This is why I came tonight. I found a document in the old case archive that changes everything.””
She slid it toward Arthur.
It was a private settlement proposal dated two months after Richard disappeared.
The document stated that Richard had agreed to surrender all claims against Carter Holdings in exchange for a payment from a third-party trust.
The proposed payment was listed as three hundred thousand dollars.
Arthur frowned.
“Who was paying him?””
Evelyn pointed to the signature line.
“Margaret Carter.””
Arthur went still.
“My wife was dead by then.””
“I know.””
Daniel read the date again.
“Two months after Mom died.””
Evelyn nodded.
“The document was filed with the bank as evidence that Richard's claim had been settled. It was one of the reasons the bank eventually closed the investigation.””
Arthur stared at the signature.
It looked like Margaret's.
But it had the same suspicious slant as the signature on the amended trust.
“This was forged,” he said.
“I believe so.””
“Then why wasn't it challenged?””
“Because Richard presented it through an attorney who claimed Margaret had signed it before her death. The bank accepted the document without examining the date carefully.””
Daniel pushed the paper away.
“So Richard used a dead woman's signature to make it look as though she had paid his debt.””
“Yes.””
Arthur stood and walked to the window.
The city lights glittered beyond the glass.
For twenty-five years, Richard had constructed a story in which Arthur was the man who betrayed him, abandoned his family, and refused to honor a debt.
Now the evidence suggested that Richard had been using forged documents to conceal his own crimes.
And Evelyn had helped him by remaining silent.
Arthur turned back.
“Who filed this settlement?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Marcus.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“He was barely twenty years old.””
“Twenty-one,” Evelyn replied.
“He was already working for his father.””
Arthur returned to his chair.
“Then Marcus has known about the fraud for decades.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He inherited the records, the debts, and the grievance. He believes your family owes his family everything.””
Daniel looked down at the papers.
“And Vanessa became part of it.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Arthur closed the folder.
“We're turning this over to the police tonight.””
Evelyn nodded.
“There's one more thing.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
“Richard sent me a copy of the original trust records three months ago. He wanted me to prepare a new claim against Carter Holdings. I refused, but I saved the files.””
Arthur took the drive.
“Why didn't you give it to us earlier?””
“Because I was afraid the files would implicate me.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Do they?””
Evelyn met his eyes.
“Yes.””
The admission hung in the room.
“I helped Richard move documents between accounts,” she continued.
“I never received money from him, but I allowed him to use my office address and professional credentials. I knew some of the paperwork was suspicious.””
Arthur's expression hardened.
“Then you will tell the police everything.””
“I will.””
Nia connected the drive to the office computer.
A list of scanned documents appeared.
There were bank statements, old contracts, trust amendments, and a series of emails between Richard and Marcus.
Daniel opened the newest email.
It was dated three days earlier.
*Subject: Carter Transfer — Final Stage*
The message was short.
Once the guarantee is recovered, execute the property transfers. If Arthur refuses, use the family situation to force Daniel's cooperation. Vanessa has already created the necessary distraction.
Daniel stopped reading.
He looked at Vanessa's name.
Then he opened the attached file.
It contained a detailed plan outlining how the company properties would be transferred through the shell companies, how the old guarantee would be used to challenge Arthur's control, and how Daniel could be pressured into signing documents that would grant Marcus voting rights over the remaining assets.
At the bottom was a final instruction.
If the original guarantee cannot be obtained, proceed with the alternative claim.
Arthur leaned closer.
“What alternative claim?””
Daniel opened the next attachment.
A draft legal filing appeared on the screen.
It claimed that Daniel Carter was the biological son of Richard Reed and that his inheritance rights entitled him to a controlling interest in assets allegedly misappropriated from Richard's estate.
The filing included the birth certificate found in Margaret's safe-deposit box.
Daniel's face turned white.
“They're going to use my birth against us.””
Arthur placed a hand on his shoulder.
“They can make whatever claim they want. They still have to prove it.””
“But if Richard is my biological father—”
“Then we establish the truth through proper evidence. It doesn't give him the right to steal our company.””
Daniel nodded, though fear remained in his eyes.
Nia scrolled to the final page of the file.
A signature appeared beneath the draft claim.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
It was his own.
He stared at the screen.
“I never signed this.””
Arthur's face hardened.
The signature looked almost perfect.
But Daniel had never seen the document before.
Nia opened the file metadata.
“The document was created yesterday at 2:18 p.m. It was uploaded using an account associated with Carter Holdings.””
“Whose account?”” Arthur asked.
Nia clicked the details.
The name appeared.
*Daniel Carter.*
Daniel shook his head.
“Someone has access to my login.””
Evelyn leaned toward the screen.
“There's another detail.””
She pointed to the electronic filing record.
“The document was submitted to the court this afternoon.””
Arthur stared at her.
“Can it be withdrawn?””
“Not without addressing the allegations. The court will require a formal response.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
“And if the judge accepts it?””
“It won't be decided overnight,” Evelyn said.
“But it could create enough uncertainty to delay the property transfers and complicate your control of the company.””
Arthur looked at the clock.
8:46 p.m.
The transfer deadline was less than thirteen hours away.
He gathered the documents.
“We're contacting the bank's legal department first thing in the morning. We'll seek an emergency hold on the property transfers, report the forged signatures, and submit the original guarantee for examination.””
Daniel nodded.
“And the court filing?””
“We challenge it with the evidence we have.””
Nia began copying the files to a secure drive.
Then her laptop chimed.
A new notification appeared.
She read it once.
Then she read it again.
“Mr. Carter,” she whispered.
Arthur turned.
“What is it?””
Nia rotated the screen toward them.
The bank had sent an automated confirmation.
The first property transfer had been processed.
The transaction time was 8:43 p.m.
Three minutes before.
Arthur stared at the screen.
“Which property?””
Nia opened the record.
The address appeared.
It was the commercial building where Carter Holdings kept its main offices.
Daniel looked up in disbelief.
“They've transferred our headquarters?””
“Not necessarily beyond recovery,” Evelyn said quickly.
“We need to verify the registration status and determine whether the bank processed the transfer without proper authorization.””
Arthur's jaw tightened.
“Then we'll do that.””
But as Nia opened the transaction history, another line appeared.
The transfer had not been initiated by Marcus Reed.
It had been approved using Arthur's own digital certificate.
And the system showed that the approval had come from inside the Carter Holdings office.
Arthur slowly turned toward the conference-room door.
Everyone in the room was accounted for.
Everyone except one person.
Vanessa.
Daniel reached for his phone.
“Where is my wife?””
No one answered.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Vanessa.
I'm sorry. I had to make a choice.
Below it was a photograph of the company vault.
The door stood open.
May you like
The original guarantee was gone.
And on the floor lay Arthur's company access card, snapped cleanly in half.
