Chapter 2: The Woman on the Camera
Daniel stood in the study with his arms crossed while Nia connected her phone to the large monitor on Arthur's desk.
Vanessa sat on the leather sofa, wearing a cream-colored robe and holding a mug of coffee she hadn't touched.
“You went through the security footage without asking me?”” she demanded.
Nia kept her eyes on the screen.
“I reviewed it because the system sent an unusual-motion alert at 8:16 p.m.””
“That's an invasion of privacy.””
“It's a security camera in the main hallway,” Nia replied.
“It records anyone who walks through it.””
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the mug.
Daniel glanced at his wife.
“Let her show me the video.””
“Daniel, I already told you what happened.””
“And I want to see it.””
For the first time that morning, Vanessa had nothing to say.
Nia opened the recording.
The hallway appeared on the screen, illuminated by the chandelier above the staircase. The timestamp read 8:14:03 p.m.
Vanessa entered from the living room.
She was alone.
She stopped near the console table, glanced toward the dining room, and then looked directly at the camera.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
“What is she doing?”” he murmured.
The recording continued.
Vanessa walked to the hallway entrance and peered around the corner. After several seconds, she returned to the center of the frame.
Then she pulled the neckline of her burgundy blouse down over her shoulder.
Daniel's face went still.
Vanessa stood motionless on the screen, studying her reflection in the glass of a framed painting. She loosened several strands of her hair, dragged her fingers through the rest, and pressed her palm against her shoulder.
Then she looked toward the dining room again.
She lowered herself to the floor.
Not hurriedly. Not as if she had fallen.
She bent her knees, braced one hand against the wall, and settled onto the hardwood with careful precision.
She waited.
The timestamp advanced by several seconds.
At 8:16:41 p.m., Arthur appeared at the end of the hallway, carrying his glasses.
He took one step.
Vanessa screamed.
The video had no sound, but the force of her movement was unmistakable. She recoiled from Arthur, threw her hands over her chest, and began gesturing frantically.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Nia paused the recording.
The room seemed to shrink around them.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
Vanessa put her mug on the coffee table.
“It's not what it looks like.””
Daniel turned toward her slowly.
“What does it look like, Vanessa?””
She opened her mouth.
“Because it looks like you prepared yourself before Dad even entered the hallway.””
“I was upset!””
“You were alone.””
“I thought I heard him coming.””
“Then why did you pull your blouse down?””
Vanessa stood so quickly that the coffee sloshed over the rim of her mug.
“Because I was changing! I had just come from the bedroom, and I heard someone behind me!””
Nia looked at the timestamp.
“You were in the hallway for almost three minutes before Mr. Carter arrived.””
“Are you calling me a liar?””
“I'm showing Daniel the footage.””
Vanessa pointed at Nia.
“You have no idea what happens in this family. You work for us. You should remember that.””
Nia's expression hardened.
“I work for Mr. Carter's company. And he has never asked me to lie for him.””
Daniel raised one hand.
“Both of you, stop.””
He turned back to the monitor and replayed the final thirty seconds.
There was his father, walking peacefully into the hallway.
There was Vanessa, already sitting on the floor.
And there was the exact moment Daniel himself had appeared, rushing to rescue a woman who had carefully constructed the scene he believed he was witnessing.
He remembered the broken glass.
He remembered the accusation.
Most painfully, he remembered the look on his father's face when he had asked, What did you do?
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I told him to go to the guest room.””
Nobody answered.
“I told my own father to leave his own hallway.””
Vanessa approached him.
“Daniel, I panicked. I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“I was afraid he'd twist the situation. You know how he is when he gets angry.””
Daniel looked at her.
“My father was holding his glasses.””
“He's very good at making people think he's innocent.””
“Stop.””
Vanessa flinched.
Daniel had never used that tone with her.
He turned to Nia.
“Is there more footage?””
“Yes. The camera outside the study captured the hallway entrance. I also saved the recordings to the company security archive.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“The company archive?””
“It's part of the household security system.””
“Delete it.””
Nia stared at her.
“What?””
“Delete it. This is a private family matter.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“No one is deleting anything.””
For several seconds, Vanessa looked as if she might argue. Then she drew a trembling breath and pressed her palms against her cheeks.
“I can't believe this is happening to me.””
Daniel almost laughed, but there was no humor left in him.
“You staged an accusation against my father.””
“I didn't think you'd see it that way.””
“How else am I supposed to see it?””
She reached for his hand.
“Daniel, please. I was angry with him. He's been treating me like a stranger ever since we got married. He questions everything I spend, everything I do, every decision I make in this house.””
“That doesn't explain what you did.””
“I wasn't thinking clearly.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel waited.
Finally, she whispered, “I wanted him to understand that he couldn't keep treating me like I was nothing.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You wanted to destroy his reputation because he criticized you?””
“He humiliated me!””
“When?””
“Yesterday afternoon. In front of you.””
Daniel remembered.
His father had asked Vanessa why she had used the company card to purchase a diamond necklace costing nearly twelve thousand dollars. Vanessa had laughed and said she deserved something beautiful after managing the household.
Arthur had calmly explained that the card was for legitimate business expenses.
The argument had lasted less than five minutes.
Daniel had thought it was over.
Now he understood that Vanessa had been carrying the insult like a lit match.
“You could have told me you were angry,” he said.
“And you would have done what? Defended him, like you always do?””
“He's my father.””
“Exactly!””
The word burst from her.
Vanessa's eyes flashed with something that looked less like fear than resentment.
“Everything belongs to him, Daniel. The house. The business.
The money. Even you, sometimes. I am your wife, but I have to ask permission to buy a necklace.””
“That's not what this is about.””
“Isn't it?””
She walked toward the window, her bare feet silent on the rug.
“You have no idea what it's like to live here. Everyone waits for Arthur to approve everything. The staff look at him before they answer me. Your father can walk into a room and make me feel like a guest in my own marriage.””
Daniel watched her.
For a moment, he saw the insecurity beneath her anger.
Then he remembered his father alone upstairs, waiting for an apology that might never come.
“You owe him the truth,” Daniel said.
Vanessa turned around.
“I'll apologize.””
“Not to me. To him.””
She hesitated.
“And you'll tell him you deliberately staged the scene.””
“I'll tell him I overreacted.””
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“You will tell him exactly what you did.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
The frightened wife disappeared. In her place stood the woman who had watched Arthur walk into the hallway and decided to turn his life upside down.
“You want me to confess to something that could ruin my marriage?””
Daniel stared at her.
“You should have thought of that before you accused my father.””
She walked past him toward the door.
“Fine. If that's what you want, I'll tell him.””
But as she reached the doorway, she stopped.
Her eyes settled on the desk.
A thick folder lay beside Arthur's computer, its contents partially exposed. Daniel recognized the blue cover immediately.
It was the folder Nia had brought from the company's accounting office the previous week.
“What is that?”” Vanessa asked.
Nia followed her gaze.
“Company financial records.””
Vanessa approached the desk.
“Why are they here?””
“Mr. Carter asked me to review some unusual transactions.””
Daniel frowned.
“What unusual transactions?””
Nia looked at him, then at Vanessa.
“I haven't finished checking everything yet. But I found three withdrawals from the company reserve account that don't match the invoices.””
“How much?”” Daniel asked.
“Three thousand dollars in one transaction. And a rejected request for a much larger amount.””
Vanessa's fingers curled around the edge of the desk.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Do you know anything about this?””
“Of course not.””
Her answer came too quickly.
Nia opened the folder and removed a printed bank statement.
“The smaller withdrawal was approved. The larger one was stopped because the bank flagged a signature discrepancy.””
Daniel took the page.
At the bottom was a scanned authorization form.
Arthur Carter's name appeared above the approval line.
Beneath it was a second signature.
Daniel's own.
He stared at it.
“That looks like my signature.””
“It is,” Nia said.
Daniel's face tightened.
“But I never approved this.””
He looked up.
Vanessa was already moving toward the door.
“Where are you going?”” he asked.
“To get dressed.””
“Vanessa.””
She stopped but didn't turn around.
Daniel held up the authorization form.
“Why is my signature on a withdrawal request I never approved?””
Vanessa slowly looked over her shoulder.
For the first time since Daniel had met her, she appeared genuinely frightened.

And when she finally answered, her words were barely audible.
“Because someone used both our names.””
