Chapter 11: The Child Nobody Looked For

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I caught it before it fell.

A child’s voice.

A child claiming to be connected to Ava.

Connected to me.

Impossible.

“Who is this?””

The line was quiet.

Then the voice answered.

“My name is Lily.””

The name felt strange.

But somehow familiar.

“Where are you?””

No answer.

“Lily?””

A small breath.

Then:

“Is Ava safe?””

The question shocked me.

Not “Who are you?””

Not “Are you my father?””

The first thing she asked was whether Ava was safe.

“I need to know where you are.””

Another pause.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Simone looked terrified.

Maria covered her mouth.

Marcus whispered:

“Lily.””

I turned toward him.

“You know that name?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Marcus.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

He rubbed his face.

“She’s the reason we were all afraid.””

I shook my head.

“No. Ava is the reason I’m angry.””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“That little girl has lived her entire life surrounded by people keeping secrets.””

My voice cracked.

“And now you’re telling me there was another child?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Lily was born the same night.””

I looked at Calvin.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because your father believed knowing the truth would put both children at risk.””

“Risk from who?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

That same silence.

That same protection.

I was done.

“Everyone leaves this house.””

They looked at me.

I continued.

“Except Maria.””

Simone stepped forward.

“Darius.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

For the first time, she didn’t fight.

That almost hurt more.

Everyone slowly moved toward the door.

Marcus stopped beside me.

“I know you hate me.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

He nodded.

“That’s fair.””

He opened the door.

Then paused.

“Darius.””

I looked at him.

“Lily isn’t lying.””

After everyone left, the mansion became silent.

Maria sat across from me in the living room.

The hospital bracelet rested between us.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

She looked exhausted.

“Lily was born two minutes after Ava.””

I stared at the floor.

“Twins?””

Maria nodded.

“Yes.””

The word landed heavily.

Twins.

I had a daughter I knew nothing about.

A child somewhere in the world who shared the same beginning as Ava.

“Who was her mother?””

Maria hesitated.

“Elena.””

I looked up.

“Elena had twins?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she know?””

Maria’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because the hospital records were changed.””

I stood.

“By Simone.””

Maria shook her head.

“Not alone.””

I froze.

“Who else?””

Maria looked down.

“Your father.””

Again.

My father.

A dead man still controlling my life.

“Why?””

Maria took a deep breath.

“Because there was a custody fight.””

“What?””

“Elena’s situation was complicated. Your father believed he could create a stable home for the children.””

I stared at her.

“So he separated them?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He wanted both children protected.””

“Then what happened?””

Maria looked toward the stairs.

“Simone panicked.””

I knew there was more.

“What did she do?””

Maria whispered:

“She took Ava.””

“And Lily?””

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“She disappeared.””

The room felt colder.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Because of Simone?””

Maria looked away.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the garden lights were still glowing.

A beautiful home.

A broken family.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, a location.

And one sentence.

Come alone if you want to meet your daughter.

My heart stopped.

I showed Maria.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

“What?””

“Darius, don’t go.””

“Why?””

She looked at the message.

Because she recognized the number.

“It’s not Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then who is it?””

May you like

Maria whispered:

“The person who took her.””
