Chapter 14: The Truth That Changed Everything
The sentence stayed in my mind.
The target was you.
Not Ava.
Not Lily.
Me.
I looked around the room.
At the people who had spent years protecting me from a truth I never knew existed.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
I walked to the table and placed both hands on it.
“My father died protecting me.””
I looked at Simone.
“Victor threatened children to get to me.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father discovered something about his company.””
I frowned.
“My father’s company?””
“Yes.””
Maria spoke quietly.
“Victor wasn’t just your father’s lawyer.””
I looked at her.
“He was his partner.””
The words shocked me.
“My father trusted him.””
“He did.””
Maria looked down.
“Until he found out Victor was stealing from him.””
Everything suddenly connected.
The control.
The secrets.
The fear.
Victor wasn’t protecting a family secret.
He was protecting himself.
“How does this involve Ava?””
Simone answered.
“Your father found evidence against him.””
“What evidence?””
“The hospital records.””
I stared.
“The babies?””
She nodded.
“Your father realized Victor had connections inside the hospital.””
Maria continued.
“He discovered Victor had used the hospital system to hide financial crimes.””
My head spun.
“So Ava and Lily were used as a distraction.””
“Yes.””
I looked upstairs.
My daughter.
A child who had been caught in a war between adults.
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t my father tell me?””
Simone looked at me.
“Because Victor threatened him.””
“With what?””
She swallowed.
“With you.””
The room became silent.
“Victor said if your father exposed him, he would destroy everything.””
Maria whispered:
“He knew about the babies.””
I closed my eyes.
My father had been trapped.
And instead of telling me, he carried it alone.
But that didn’t excuse everyone else.
I looked at Simone.
“Why didn’t you tell me after he died?””
She cried.
“Because I was already your wife.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“I was afraid you would hate me.””
I nodded slowly.
“At least you finally said the truth.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
A location.
A warehouse address.
Then:
Bring Simone.
I showed everyone.
Maria immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Simone looked terrified.
“He wants me.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because I know where the evidence is.””
I stared.
“What evidence?””
She hesitated.
Then walked to the bookshelf.
She removed a small decorative box hidden behind several books.
Inside was a flash drive.
I looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because he trusted me to protect it.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything?””
She looked down.
“I know.””
I picked up the flash drive.
“What’s on it?””
“Proof.””
“Of Victor?””
She nodded.
“And proof that Ava and Lily were never supposed to be separated.””
I looked at the clock.
Time was running.
I hated that.
But I knew one thing.
Victor wanted me angry.
He wanted me emotional.
He wanted me alone.
I wasn’t going to give him that.
“Maria.””
She looked at me.
“Stay with Ava.””
She nodded.
“Darius…”
“I’m bringing her home.””
Maria understood.
She didn’t ask which daughter.
Because the answer was both.
Simone stepped toward the door.
“I’ll go.””
I looked at her.
“You know this might not end well.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, she looked honest.
“I’ve spent three years running from what I did.””
She looked upstairs.
“I’m done running.””
The warehouse was empty when we arrived.
Too empty.
The kind of empty that felt planned.
Simone walked beside me.
“You should hate me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
We entered.
A single light hung from the ceiling.
And beneath it stood Victor.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
“You finally came.””
I held the flash drive.
“This ends tonight.””
Victor laughed.
“No.””
He looked at Simone.
“This ends when you admit what you did.””
Simone froze.
I looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Victor smiled.
“She never told you everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“Simone.””
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The words scared me.
“What?””
Victor stepped closer.
“Ask her who really took Ava.””
I looked at Simone.
The silence was the answer.
“No.””
She whispered:
“Darius…”
My voice dropped.
“Tell me.””
She closed her eyes.
May you like
And finally said:
“I did.””
