Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Lie
The room went silent after Marcus spoke.
The person who helped Simone hide Ava.
I looked at the message again.
The photo.
My daughter’s face.
Someone had been watching my home.
Watching Ava.
And everyone in the room seemed to know more than they were saying.
I turned to Marcus.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who helped her?””
Marcus looked at Simone.
She looked away.
That was enough.
I knew.
“Tell me.””
Simone whispered:
“Darius…”
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
Too calm.
“I spent three years living inside a lie. I’m done asking politely.””
She looked at me.
A tear fell.
“Your father.””
The words hit me harder than anything else.
“My father?””
She nodded.
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“My father died before Ava was born.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Simone sat down.
“He knew.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
She looked at the floor.
“Your father knew about the hospital.””
I felt dizzy.
My family.
My wife.
My parents.
Everyone.
Everyone had been part of a secret.
Except me.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Your father helped arrange the paperwork.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He took a breath.
“Because your father believed he was protecting you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
I pointed upstairs.
“Protecting me from what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Elena spoke.
“From the truth about Ava’s birth.””
I looked at her.
“What truth?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Ava was connected to your family before she was born.””
I froze.
“What?””
Elena looked at Simone.
“Tell him.””
Simone’s face collapsed.
“I didn’t want him to know.””
“Know what?””
She whispered:
“Your father knew Elena’s family.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at Maria.
She looked down.
Marcus closed his eyes.
And suddenly, I understood.
This wasn’t a random mistake.
This wasn’t one desperate woman making one terrible choice.
This was a chain.
A plan.
“How long?””
Simone looked at me.
“What?””
“How long did everyone know each other?””
Nobody answered.
I grabbed the folder from the table.
I opened the documents again.
Hospital records.
Names.
Dates.
Something caught my eye.
A signature.
Not Simone’s.
Not Maria’s.
My father’s.
I stared at it.
My hands shook.
“He signed this.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“What did he sign?””
Marcus looked away.
“A guardianship agreement.””
My heart stopped.
“Guardianship?””
I looked at Elena.
“Was Ava supposed to come to me?””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed me.
“Why?””
She looked at Simone.
“Because your father knew you wanted a family.””
I stared at the floor.
My father had arranged my entire life.
A daughter.
A marriage.
A future.
But none of it was mine to choose.
I whispered:
“Was any part of my life real?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ava appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Daddy?””
Everyone turned.
My heart immediately changed.
No matter what happened.
No matter what secrets existed.
She was real.
I walked toward her.
“I’m here.””
She looked down at the adults.
“Why is everyone crying?””
I picked her up.
“Sometimes people remember things that hurt.””
She touched my face.
“Are you leaving?””
The question destroyed me.
“No.””
I hugged her tighter.
“I’m not leaving.””
Behind me, Simone started crying.
Not the controlled tears she showed before.
Real tears.
Because she knew something had changed.
I looked at her.
“I need the whole truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“I’ll tell you.””
“Everything.””
“Yes.””
I waited.
Then she whispered:
“But before I tell you…”
She looked at Ava.
“There’s something you need to know about why your father was chosen.””
My body went still.
“Why?””
Simone looked terrified.
“Because Ava wasn’t the only child involved in that night.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
May you like
And from somewhere downstairs...
A door opened.
