Chapter 4: The Stranger at the Front Door

The voice from downstairs froze everyone in place.

“I know what you did with the baby.””

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Simone.

Not Maria.

Not me.

Even Ava stopped asking questions.

She rested her small head against my shoulder, sensing the fear spreading through the room.

I looked at Simone.

Her face had lost all color.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Simone.””

Her lips parted, but no words came out.

Maria whispered, “You never told him.””

Simone looked at her sharply.

“Be quiet.””

That was when I realized something.

The person downstairs wasn’t a surprise to Simone.

They were a threat.

I carried Ava into the hallway.

“Stay here,” I told Maria.

But Maria stepped forward.

“No, Darius.””

Her voice shook.

“You don’t know who that is.””

I looked at her.

“Neither do you?””

She swallowed.

“I know enough.””

The mansion hallway felt different now.

The bright chandelier above us, the white-and-gold doors, the expensive paintings on the walls.

All of it looked like a beautiful cover hiding something rotten underneath.

I walked down the stairs slowly.

Simone followed behind me.

“Darius, wait.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

She looked desperate.

“Because you don’t understand what’s happening.””

I turned around.

“Then explain it before someone else does.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than a confession.

At the bottom of the stairs, the front door opened.

A man stood outside.

Black.

Late forties.

Wearing a dark jacket.

His face was tired, like someone who had spent years searching for something.

His eyes moved past me.

Straight to Ava.

Then to Simone.

And his expression changed.

“You really did it.””

Simone stepped forward.

“Leave.””

The man laughed quietly.

“You still think you can order people around?””

I held Ava closer.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Simone immediately reacted.

“No.””

The fear in her voice made me tense.

The man pulled out an old photograph.

Not a weapon.

A photograph.

He held it toward me.

“My name is Marcus.””

I didn’t take it.

“What does that have to do with my family?””

Marcus looked at Simone.

“She never told you anything, did she?””

I looked back at my wife.

“Answer me.””

Simone’s eyes filled with tears.

“Darius…”

“No.””

My voice became harder.

“No more.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“She built this entire life on one lie.””

Simone shook her head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“I was there.””

Maria appeared at the top of the stairs.

When she saw Marcus, she covered her mouth.

“You.””

Marcus looked up.

“Maria.””

The way they said each other’s names told me everything.

They knew each other.

I looked between them.

“How many people have been keeping secrets from me?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus lowered the photograph.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””

“Then why are you here?””

His eyes moved toward Ava.

“Because she deserves to know where she came from.””

My entire body went cold.

Ava tightened her arms around my neck.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to look at her.

“I’m right here.””

Marcus watched us.

And something in his expression softened.

“You love her.””

I stared at him.

“Of course I do.””

He nodded slowly.

“That’s why I waited.””

Simone suddenly stepped forward.

“Marcus, please.””

Everyone looked at her.

Please.

The same word she had used earlier.

The woman who always controlled every room was now begging.

Marcus looked at her.

“You had three years.””

His voice lowered.

“Three years to tell him.””

I looked at Simone.

“What happened three years ago?””

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

Whatever the truth was, it started before Ava came into my life.

Marcus handed me the photograph.

This time, I took it.

My fingers shook.

The image was old.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

And three people standing beside a bed.

I recognized one immediately.

Maria.

The second person was Marcus.

The third person...

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized her too.

Simone.

But the woman in the picture wasn’t smiling.

She looked terrified.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

A date.

A name.

And one sentence.

My heart pounded as I read it.

“Baby Ava was never supposed to leave the hospital with Simone.””

I looked up.

The room spun.

And before anyone could explain, Marcus said the words that shattered everything.

“Darius, the woman you married did not lose a baby.””

May you like

He paused.

“She took one.””
