Chapter 13: The Man Who Owned the Secret

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

I know where Ava sleeps.

Four sentences.

Four words.

But they carried a threat heavier than anything I had faced before.

My daughter was upstairs.

Sleeping in the same room where she kept her teddy bear and colored pictures on the walls.

And someone had been watching.

Someone knew.

I looked at Simone.

“Your family’s lawyer?””

She nodded.

Her face was filled with fear.

“His name is Victor Hale.””

I felt something shift inside me.

The name sounded familiar.

Not because I knew him personally.

Because I had heard my father mention him countless times.

A trusted advisor.

A family friend.

Someone who had helped manage everything after my father died.

I laughed quietly.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life controlled by someone else.

“Where is he?””

Simone looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice cracked.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years.””

Maria looked at her.

“But he contacted you.””

Simone froze.

I turned.

“What?””

Maria stared at Simone.

“You knew he was still involved.””

Simone closed her eyes.

A painful silence filled the room.

I didn’t need another confession.

I already had one.

“You knew.””

Simone whispered:

“Yes.””

I felt anger rising again.

“How?””

She sat down.

“After Ava came home, Victor helped make sure the records were changed.””

My jaw tightened.

“He helped you steal my daughter.””

She cried.

“I know what I did.””

“Do you?””

My voice shook.

“Do you really?””

I looked toward the stairs.

“You let me spend three years believing I was a father by choice.””

She looked at me.

“You are her father.””

I stopped.

The words hit differently.

Because they were true.

But they didn’t erase the lie.

“I love Ava.””

“I know.””

“But love doesn’t erase what you did.””

She lowered her head.

“I know.””

For the first time, I believed she understood.

Not because she said sorry.

Because she finally stopped defending herself.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Older.

Controlled.

“Darius.””

I knew immediately.

Victor.

“How do you know my number?””

A quiet laugh.

“I knew your number before you knew mine.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where is my daughter?””

“You mean Ava?””

The way he said her name made my blood run cold.

“Stay away from her.””

“I’m afraid that’s not possible.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because you’re finally ready to hear the truth.””

I looked at Simone.

“She already told me enough.””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“She told you what protects her.””

Simone stepped forward.

“Darius, don’t listen.””

Victor heard her.

“Ah.””

A pause.

“Simone is there.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“You’re watching us.””

“No.””

A longer pause.

“I’m watching history repeat itself.””

I walked toward the front door.

“Where are you?””

“Not far.””

“Tell me.””

“I want to show you something first.””

“I’m not playing games.””

“You already have been.””

The line went quiet.

Then he said:

“Ask Simone about the second hospital room.””

I looked at her.

Her face changed.

She knew.

“Darius…”

My heart sank.

“What second room?””

Nobody answered.

Victor continued.

“Your father didn’t just hide two children.””

The words froze me.

“He hid the reason they were separated.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Maria looked terrified.

“What is the second room?””

Simone didn’t speak.

I walked toward her.

“Tell me.””

She covered her face.

“I can’t.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

She looked at me.

“I promised.””

“To who?””

Her eyes moved toward the floor.

And then she whispered:

“To your father.””

The room went silent.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“My father made you promise?””

She nodded.

“Before he died.””

“Why?””

Simone looked at me.

“Because he knew Victor would come back.””

I waited.

Then she said:

“And because your father was afraid Victor would tell you why Ava and Lily were really separated.””

I stepped back.

“What reason?””

Simone started crying.

“The babies were never the target.””

I frowned.

“What?””

May you like

She whispered:

“The target was you.””
