Chapter 10: The Door Behind the Wall

Maya stared at the message on her phone.

*Don’t open the door.*

The words were simple.

But they carried the same fear she had seen in Marcus’s eyes all day.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew what they were doing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Maya showed him the screen.

His expression hardened immediately.

“Who sent that?””

She shook her head.

“Unknown number.””

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

The color slowly drained from her face.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Maya noticed.

“What?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“There was never supposed to be a door.””

The sentence made no sense.

Maya looked at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

And for the first time, Maya saw something unexpected.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

“Marcus,” Evelyn whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Maya stepped toward him.

“What door?””

Marcus looked at the key in her hand.

Then at the old house around them.

“The one your mother created.””

Daniel frowned.

“Created?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“After she realized someone was searching through her things, she stopped keeping important documents in obvious places.””

Maya looked around the room.

Her mother’s bedroom.

The old furniture.

The memories.

“She built a hiding place.””

Marcus nodded.

“She told me once.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know where.””

“But you knew it existed.””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Again.

Another secret.

Another thing he chose not to tell her.

Maya walked toward the wall behind her mother’s bookshelf.

“Where?””

Marcus pointed.

“Behind there.””

Daniel moved immediately.

He pushed the bookshelf slightly.

Nothing happened.

Maya looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother loved that bookshelf.””

Daniel looked at the shelves.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“She always hid things in books.””

Maya glanced at him.

“You remember that?””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“She used to leave notes inside them.””

The smile disappeared.

“Before everything changed.””

Maya and Daniel moved the bookshelf together.

The wooden frame scraped against the floor.

Behind it was a section of wall.

At first, it looked normal.

Then Maya saw it.

A thin line.

A rectangle hidden in the paint.

A door.

Her hand moved toward it.

The key fit perfectly.

Everyone stopped breathing.

The lock clicked.

Maya slowly opened it.

Inside was a small hidden room.

Not a bedroom.

Not a storage space.

A place designed for secrets.

A desk.

A chair.

A locked box.

And on the wall…

Photographs.

Maya walked inside.

Her mother’s handwriting covered the desk.

Notes.

Dates.

Names.

Daniel followed slowly.

He stopped when he saw one photograph.

It showed him standing outside a building.

A building he recognized.

“My old office.””

Maya looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“I worked there before I disappeared.””

Evelyn looked closer.

“This is where Claire worked too.””

Maya opened the notebook on the desk.

The first page had a title.

*Everything I Know.*

Her mother had documented everything.

Every meeting.

Every conversation.

Every suspicious event.

Maya turned the pages.

Then stopped.

A page near the middle had one sentence written in bold.

*Marcus was not the beginning. He was the mistake.*

Maya looked at Marcus.

His face changed.

Daniel read the sentence.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Maya kept reading.

The next lines were written smaller.

*He was manipulated. He believed he was protecting us. But someone else created the lie.*

Maya exhaled.

The truth was becoming more complicated.

Marcus had betrayed them.

But maybe he wasn’t the person who destroyed them.

Then she found another page.

A list of names.

Claire.

Marcus.

A third name.

Maya stopped.

Because she recognized it.

Her fingers froze.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She turned the page around.

The name was written clearly.

*Evelyn Carter.*

The room went silent.

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

She took one step backward.

Maya’s voice became quiet.

“Why is your name here?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Daniel stared.

“Evelyn?””

The older woman closed her eyes.

“I knew this moment would come.””

Maya’s heart sank.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn looked at the notebook.

Then at Maya.

“I didn’t start it.””

May you like

Nobody spoke.

“But I helped hide it.””
