Chapter 11: The Friend Who Kept the Secret

Maya felt like the room had shifted beneath her.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

She looked at Evelyn.

The woman who brought her mother’s letter.

The woman who claimed she wanted Maya to know the truth.

The woman who had been standing beside them this entire time.

“You helped hide it?””

Evelyn nodded.

Slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“How?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I protected someone.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Maya already knew.

“Claire.””

Evelyn looked down.

That was enough.

Maya stepped away.

“I trusted you.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“You don’t know.””

Her voice cracked.

“You came here today acting like you were saving me.””

“I was trying to.””

“After hiding the truth for years?””

Evelyn accepted the accusation.

Because she knew it was deserved.

“I was afraid.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

Everyone was always afraid.

Afraid of losing someone.

Afraid of consequences.

Afraid of the truth.

And every time, Maya was the one left behind.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Why did you help Claire?””

Evelyn sat down.

“I thought she was protecting your family.””

Maya stared.

“You thought she was protecting us?””

Evelyn nodded.

“At first.””

“At first?””

Evelyn looked at the photographs on the wall.

“Claire convinced me Daniel had dangerous people looking for him.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She told me he was involved in things that could put Maya at risk.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And you believed her?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Maya opened another page from her mother’s notebook.

There was a sentence underlined.

*The people who love you can become the easiest people to manipulate.*

Maya touched the words.

Her mother had understood.

She had seen it happening.

But she couldn’t stop it.

“Where is Claire now?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Maya stared.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did you know she was dangerous?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because she contacted me last week.””

The room went silent.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“What?””

Evelyn looked nervous.

“She told me Maya was close to finding the truth.””

Maya felt cold.

“She knew?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew about Daniel coming to the graduation.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then everyone looked at Marcus.

He shook his head.

“No.””

Maya watched him.

“You told someone.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then how did Claire know?””

Marcus looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel walked toward him.

“You need to start knowing.””

Marcus looked away.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

Everyone froze.

The same unknown number.

This time, Maya grabbed it before Marcus could.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a woman’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

“Maya.””

Her entire body went still.

She knew that voice.

Not personally.

But from old memories.

A voice that used to visit their house.

A voice that laughed with her mother.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“You have your mother’s stubbornness.””

Maya’s grip tightened.

“Claire?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

The voice continued.

“I hoped you would stop searching.””

Maya stepped away from everyone.

“Why did you lie?””

Claire laughed softly.

“Because your mother refused to listen.””

“My mother trusted you.””

“She did.””

The answer was terrifying.

“And that was her mistake.””

Maya felt anger rise.

“What did you do to her?””

Silence.

Then Claire said:

“I didn’t do anything.””

A pause.

“But Marcus did.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus went pale.

Maya stared.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“You think you know the story because you found papers and photographs.””

Her voice became quieter.

“You don’t.””

Maya’s heart raced.

“Then tell me.””

Claire laughed.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

The call started breaking up.

Maya shouted:

“Wait!””

Before disconnecting, Claire said one final sentence.

“The person who caused your mother’s death has been standing beside you this entire time.””

The phone went silent.

Maya slowly lowered it.

Everyone looked at each other.

And then she realized.

Claire didn’t say Marcus.

She didn’t say Daniel.

May you like

She said…

*standing beside you.*
