Chapter 5: The Recording My Mother Left Behind

The graduation ceremony never continued.

No one announced the next graduate.

No one played music.

The stage remained decorated with flowers and banners while Maya stood holding a phone that had changed everything.

A message.

A warning.

A recording.

The word repeated in her mind.

Recording.

Her mother had left something behind.

Something Marcus didn’t want her to hear.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“You know about it.””

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation answered the question.

“Yes.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“Where is it?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

He immediately shook his head.

“Don’t.””

Maya turned toward him.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Marcus looked broken.

“Maya, there are things that will hurt you.””

She laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Do you know what hurts?””

She held up the photograph.

“Finding out my entire childhood was built on something fake.””

Marcus looked down.

Daniel stepped closer.

“She deserves the truth.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You think the truth fixes everything?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

A pause.

“But lies destroy everything.””

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“Where is the recording?””

Evelyn slowly reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small device.

An old digital recorder.

Maya stared.

“My mother recorded this?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew someone might try to erase what happened.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

Maya noticed.

“You knew she had this.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

That terrible silence.

Evelyn handed the recorder to Maya.

“I kept it hidden because I promised her.””

Maya pressed the button.

For a second, there was only static.

Then a voice.

A voice Maya had not heard in years.

Her mother’s voice.

“Maya…”

Her knees almost gave out.

Daniel looked away.

Even Marcus couldn’t hide his reaction.

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this, then something happened that I was afraid of.””

Maya covered her mouth.

Her mother sounded tired.

But calm.

“I need you to know something. Your father did not leave us.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The auditorium was silent.

“I found proof. I found where he had been. I found out someone lied to me.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

He looked down.

Her mother continued.

“I wanted to believe it was a mistake. I wanted to believe someone I loved wouldn’t do this.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“But I was wrong.””

A wave of whispers moved through the audience.

Maya’s eyes filled.

Her mother knew.

She knew.

The recording continued.

“If Marcus is the one who gives you this message, forgive him if you can.””

Maya froze.

Marcus looked up.

Hope appeared briefly on his face.

Then the next sentence destroyed it.

“But do not trust him until you know why he did it.””

The hope disappeared.

Maya stared at Marcus.

“Why?””

Her voice was barely audible.

The recording continued.

“I found documents. I found conversations. I found proof that Daniel was searching for us.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“He was looking for us?””

Evelyn nodded sadly.

Maya listened.

“And someone was making sure he never reached us.””

The recorder clicked.

A few seconds of silence.

Then her mother whispered:

“I don’t know who else is involved.””

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

Maya looked at him.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“No!””

Her voice echoed.

She pressed the button again.

The recording continued.

“The worst part is that I don’t know if I can protect my daughter anymore.””

Maya’s tears fell.

“Mom…”

Then came the final words.

“If anything happens to me, look for the blue folder.””

The recording ended.

Everyone waited.

Maya looked confused.

“Blue folder?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your mother hid it.””

“Where?””

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

That look made Maya’s stomach drop.

Marcus noticed.

“No.””

Evelyn whispered:

“She hid it somewhere you would never think to look.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Where?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“Where did my mother hide the blue folder?””

Marcus looked at her.

And for the first time, his eyes filled with genuine fear.

“Your house.””

Maya froze.

“Our house?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“She hid it in the one place I never searched.””

Daniel frowned.

“What place?””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“The place that belonged to your mother.””

Maya’s heart raced.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

May you like

Her mother’s old room.

The room Marcus had kept locked since the funeral.
