Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Father’s Disappearance

The graduation stage had become the place where Maya’s childhood ended.

The flowers.

The banners.

The smiling faces.

Everything that was supposed to represent her future now felt like a scene from someone else’s life.

She stood between two men.

One who raised her.

One who shared her blood.

And both were carrying secrets.

Marcus slowly stepped away from the microphone.

The crowd watched every movement.

“Maya,” he said.

She looked at him.

There was a time when hearing her name from him made her feel safe.

Now it sounded like a warning.

“Please don’t make a decision based on one letter.””

Maya stared at him.

“One letter?””

She lifted the photograph.

“One photograph?””

Then she pointed at Daniel.

“One person who looks exactly like me?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel watched silently.

Maya noticed that.

“You’re not even surprised.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“Why?””

His expression softened.

“Because I knew this day would come.””

Maya frowned.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I just didn’t know when.””

Marcus looked angry now.

“You had no right.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“No right?””

His voice rose.

“I spent years trying to find her.””

“You should have stayed away.””

The sentence landed harder than Marcus expected.

Because everyone heard it.

Maya heard it.

And Daniel heard it.

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“Why would you say that?””

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

The crowd remained silent.

A professor near the stage slowly lowered his phone.

Even he understood this was no longer a graduation moment.

It was a family confession.

Maya walked toward Marcus.

“Tell me the truth.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I protected you.””

She shook her head.

“No. You protected yourself.””

The words seemed to hurt him.

For a second, she saw the old Marcus.

The man who helped her with homework.

The man who taught her how to drive.

The man who held her hand after her mother passed away.

Then she saw the man standing here today.

The man who knew Daniel was alive.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Your mother never stopped loving him.””

Marcus looked away.

Maya noticed.

That tiny movement.

That tiny reaction.

And suddenly, she understood.

There was something between Marcus and her mother.

Something bigger than he admitted.

“Did my mother know you were alive?”” Maya asked Daniel.

“Yes.””

“Did she try to find you?””

“Yes.””

“Did Marcus stop her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

Maya looked at Marcus.

“Did you?””

Marcus’s hands shook.

“I loved your mother.””

Maya froze.

“That’s not an answer.””

His eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

The words surprised everyone.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Afraid of what?””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Not Daniel.

Maya.

“I was afraid you would leave.””

Maya felt tears building.

“Leave you?””

Marcus nodded.

“You were all I had.””

The honesty made the room quieter.

But it didn’t erase the damage.

Maya whispered:

“So you lied.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small piece of paper.

Not a photograph.

Not a letter.

A document.

He handed it to Maya.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Something I found after your mother disappeared.””

Maya unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What…”

Her voice broke.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked terrified.

Daniel answered.

“Proof that I didn’t disappear.””

Maya looked closer.

There were dates.

Signatures.

A record showing Daniel had been alive years after everyone claimed he was gone.

Her hands trembled.

Then she saw something else.

A name.

A signature.

Her fingers went cold.

Because it wasn’t Daniel’s.

It wasn’t her mother’s.

It was Marcus’s.

Maya looked up slowly.

“Why is your signature on this?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Daniel stepped closer.

“He knows exactly where I was.””

Maya stared at Marcus.

The sentence from earlier returned.

“He knew exactly where I was.””

The man at the microphone who had just called himself her father couldn’t speak.

Maya held the document, the letter, and the photograph together.

Three pieces of a truth she never wanted.

Three pieces of a life she never knew.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Maya…”

She waited.

He looked at Daniel.

Then back at her.

And finally said:

“The day your mother died… she wasn’t alone.””

Maya’s breath stopped.

Daniel’s face changed.

And before Marcus could finish the sentence, the auditorium doors opened again.

A woman’s voice came from the entrance.

“Maya?””

Everyone turned.

An older woman stood there holding another envelope.

And she looked directly at Marcus.

“You need to tell her what happened that night.””

May you like

Marcus went pale.

Because he knew exactly who she was.
