Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Blue Folder
Maya read the sentence again.
Then again.
*The person who separated us is not the person you think.*
For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
The room was silent except for the faint sound of paper shaking in her hands.
She expected the blue folder to reveal Marcus’s betrayal.
She expected proof.
A confession.
Something simple enough to understand.
But this was different.
This was another mystery.
Another door opening into a hallway filled with locked rooms.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Maya didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Marcus.
He was standing near the doorway.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just scared.
And that scared her more.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
He looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Did you know this was here?””
His eyes moved to the folder.
Then away.
“No.””
Maya held up the letter.
“Then why did you leave?””
He had no response.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“Because he knows something.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You don’t know me.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I know enough.””
Maya opened the folder.
The first document was a police report.
The second was a collection of printed emails.
The third was a photograph.
Not of Daniel.
Not of her mother.
A photograph of Marcus.
Standing outside a building.
Talking to someone.
Maya frowned.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
She looked closer.
The person standing beside Marcus was a woman.
A woman she had never seen before.
But Marcus recognized her.
His face changed.
Maya noticed immediately.
“Who is she?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Maya, give me that.””
She pulled the folder away.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“Please.””
That word again.
The same word he used when he wanted her to stop asking questions.
But she wasn’t a child anymore.
She wasn’t the little girl who trusted every answer he gave.
“Who is she?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
Then closed his eyes.
“Her name is Claire.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Claire?””
Maya looked at him.
“You know her?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She worked with your mother.””
Maya looked back at the picture.
“So why was Marcus meeting her?””
Nobody spoke.
The answer was already forming.
But nobody wanted to say it.
Maya flipped through the documents.
One email caught her attention.
The sender name was missing.
But the message remained.
*Daniel cannot find Maya. Make sure he believes she moved away.*
Her stomach dropped.
She kept reading.
*If he contacts the police, handle it.*
Maya looked up.
“Handle it?””
Daniel took the paper from her.
His hands tightened.
“I received messages like this.””
Maya stared.
“You did?””
Daniel nodded.
“For years.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
Maya looked between them.
“No more.””
Both men stopped.
“I am done hearing pieces of the truth.””
Her voice shook.
“But I need all of it.””
She held the folder.
“Right now.””
Marcus looked exhausted.
Then he sat down.
For the first time, he stopped fighting.
“Your mother found out I was helping Claire.””
Maya froze.
“Helping her do what?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“I don’t know everything.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Marcus looked up.
“I’m not.””
“Then tell her why Claire was involved.””
Marcus’s silence lasted too long.
Maya noticed.
“You know.””
He looked at her.
“I knew Claire was trying to contact your mother.””
“Why?””
“Because she had information.””
“About what?””
Marcus looked at the blue folder.
“About Daniel.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What information?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I never saw it.””
Maya stared.
“You’re telling me you helped someone hide my father, but you don’t know why?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked her.
Because it was the first time he admitted something without defending himself.
Maya looked down at the folder again.
A smaller envelope was hidden behind the documents.
No name.
No date.
Just one word.
*OPEN.*
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Her mother’s handwriting.
*Maya, if you found this, then you already know Marcus was involved. But you need to understand something. He was not the person who started this.*
Maya looked at Marcus.
His eyes filled with tears.
She continued reading.
*The person who convinced everyone your father abandoned us was someone we both trusted.*
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who?””
Maya turned the page.
There was only one name.
A name that made Evelyn cover her mouth.
A name that made Marcus stand immediately.
May you like
Because he knew what it meant.
*Claire Whitmore.*
