Chapter 3: The Woman With Daniel’s Letter
Nobody moved.
The woman standing in the doorway looked like she had walked into the wrong funeral.
She was in her late forties, wearing a dark blue coat and holding a small white envelope between trembling fingers.
But it wasn’t her appearance that froze the room.
It was the handwriting.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Every person there recognized it.
The sharp angles of his letters.
The slight curve at the end of his name.
The way he always pressed harder on certain words.
My heart started pounding.
“Who are you?”” Michael asked.
The woman looked past him.
Her eyes found Ryan.
And when she saw him, her face changed.
Not surprise.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to see you again,” she said.
Ryan took a step backward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The room went quiet.
Michael turned slowly.
“You know her?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
The woman tightened her grip on the envelope.
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she looked at me.
“I worked with Daniel.””
“Where?””
“At Clarke Design Group.””
I felt a cold wave pass through me.
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Claire’s eyes moved back to him.
“You said that last time too.””
“Last time?””
Michael stepped forward.
“What exactly happened last time?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Madison.
My daughter was standing beside me, holding my hand.
Claire’s expression softened.
“Daniel loved that little girl more than anything.””
Madison stared at her.
“Did you know my daddy?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you about Uncle Ryan?””
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Madison, enough.””
But Claire answered.
“Yes.””
A sharp silence filled the room.
Madison’s fingers squeezed mine.
“What did he say?””
Claire looked at Ryan.
Then at the envelope.
“He said if anything happened to him, I needed to make sure this reached the right person.””
Ryan’s voice rose.
“She’s lying.””
Claire didn’t flinch.
“You’ve always been good at that.””
The funeral director quietly stepped away.
Several guests whispered among themselves.
Ryan looked around and realized something.
Everyone was watching him now.
Not with sympathy.
With suspicion.
“I have no idea who this woman is,” Ryan said.
Claire gave a bitter laugh.
“That’s impressive.””
“What is?””
“You erased me from the story so completely that even Daniel’s wife doesn’t know my name.””
I looked at Ryan.
“What does she mean?””
Ryan didn’t look at me.
That told me everything.
Claire walked into the room and placed the envelope on the desk.
“Daniel found out Ryan was stealing money from the company.””
Michael nodded.
“We already know that.””
“No,” Claire said.
Her voice became quieter.
“He found out something worse.””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Stop.””
Claire ignored him.
“He wasn’t just stealing.””
She looked at me.
“He was covering something up.””
My stomach twisted.
“What?””
Claire looked down.
“Two years ago, one of Daniel’s employees discovered unusual transactions.””
Michael frowned.
“Who?””
“Me.””
The room went still.
Claire continued.
“I was the financial director at the company. I noticed money disappearing from accounts that were supposed to be untouched.””
“And Ryan?”” Michael asked.
“He blamed me.””
Ryan laughed.
“She was fired because she made mistakes.””
Claire looked directly at him.
“I was fired because I found your secret.””
Ryan’s jaw clenched.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
She turned toward me.
“Daniel rehired me privately after that.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Claire’s face softened.
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Protect me.
Daniel had been carrying all of this alone.
The fear.
The secrets.
The danger.
And I had thought he was just stressed.
I had thought he was distant.
I had thought maybe our marriage was struggling.
I covered my mouth.
“He should have told me.””
Claire looked sad.
“He wanted to.””
She glanced at Madison.
“But he was afraid.””
“Of Ryan?””
Claire nodded.
“Not because Ryan would hurt him.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Because Ryan would hurt the people Daniel loved.””
Ryan suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Michael blocked him.
“No.””
Ryan stared at him.
“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.””
Michael’s expression remained calm.
“I think I do.””
Claire reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“Daniel gave me this three days before he died.””
Michael looked at it.
“What’s on it?””
“Everything.””
Ryan went pale.
Claire continued.
“Every transaction. Every message. Every conversation.””
She looked at Ryan.
“And the proof that Daniel did not fall down those stairs.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
I looked at Ryan.
His face had lost all color.
But he still tried to control the situation.
“You’re all making a mistake.””
Nobody answered.
He pointed at Claire.
“She’s obsessed. She’s angry because she lost her job.””
Claire smiled sadly.
“Still using the same excuse.””
Ryan’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you haven’t changed.””
For the first time, Ryan looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Claire walked toward the laptop.
“Daniel knew you would deny everything.””
She inserted the flash drive.
A folder appeared.
One file.
No name.
Just a date.
The date Daniel died.
Michael clicked it.
A video opened.
The screen showed Daniel’s house.
The camera angle was unfamiliar.
Not a security camera.
Something hidden.
A hidden camera.
I felt my chest tighten.
The video showed the staircase.
The same staircase where Daniel supposedly fell.
The timestamp showed:
*11:43 PM*
A few seconds later, Daniel appeared.
He was walking down the stairs.
Alive.
Then Ryan entered the frame.
My hands went cold.
Nobody spoke.
On the screen, Daniel turned around.
He looked surprised.
Ryan said something.
The audio was unclear.
Michael increased the volume.
The room filled with static.
Then Ryan’s voice became clear.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
My breathing stopped.
Daniel answered.
“You’re my brother.””
Ryan stepped closer.
“That’s why I’m giving you one last chance.””
The video shook slightly.
Daniel backed away.
“I already gave you a chance.””
Ryan looked toward the stairs.
Then back at him.
“You really think Emma will believe you?””
Daniel said something.
The audio cut.
Then Ryan’s voice came again.
“You always thought being the good guy would save you.””
The screen froze.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone knew what happened next.
The video continued.
Daniel stepped backward.
His foot touched the edge of the stairs.
Ryan reached out.
Not to help.
To push.
The room exploded with sound.
Someone cried out.
Someone dropped a phone.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because I saw it.
I saw my husband’s final moment.
Ryan shoved him.
Daniel fell.
The video stopped.
The office became chaos.
Ryan immediately turned toward the door.
Michael grabbed his arm.
“Don’t even think about it.””
Ryan pulled away.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised me.
“I understand.””
Ryan looked at me.
For a moment, he looked almost human.
Almost like the man I thought I knew.
Then he whispered:
“Emma…”
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name.””
Madison stepped closer to me.
Ryan looked at her.
And something strange happened.
His anger disappeared.
For one second, he looked genuinely sorry.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Ryan looked down.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Nobody spoke.
Michael nodded toward it.
“Answer it.””
Ryan didn’t move.
“Answer it,” Michael repeated.
Slowly, Ryan picked up.
He pressed the phone to his ear.
At first, there was silence.
Then Ryan’s face changed.
The color drained from his skin.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
Everyone stared.
Ryan listened.
His hand began to shake.
Then he whispered:
“You told me the footage was destroyed.””
The room went completely silent.
Ryan looked up.
And for the first time, he wasn’t looking at us.
He was looking at the person on the phone.
The person who had been controlling him.
“Who is this?”” Michael demanded.
Ryan slowly lowered the phone.
His eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped on me.
“He’s alive.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Daniel…”
Nobody breathed.
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“Daniel wasn’t the only one in that house that night.””
Madison’s grip tightened around my hand.
The phone slipped from Ryan’s fingers.
May you like
And from the speaker, before the call disconnected, we heard a man’s voice whisper one sentence:
“Tell Emma I’m sorry I had to disappear.””
