Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The words from the phone hung in the air.

*Tell Emma I’m sorry I had to disappear.*

A voice.

A familiar voice.

A voice that should have been impossible.

My husband’s voice.

I stared at the phone on the floor.

My mind refused to understand what my ears had heard.

Daniel was dead.

I had touched his cold hand.

I had watched them close the coffin.

I had signed papers.

I had chosen flowers.

I had stood beside a wooden box while people told me I needed to say goodbye.

But now Ryan was standing in front of me, shaking, because someone had just told him Daniel was alive.

“Play it again,” Michael said.

Nobody answered.

He picked up Ryan’s phone and looked at the screen.

“Who called you?””

Ryan didn’t respond.

His eyes were fixed on the floor.

“Ryan.””

Still nothing.

Michael grabbed his shoulder.

“Who called you?””

Ryan finally looked up.

And what I saw in his face scared me.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

“He doesn’t know,” Ryan whispered.

“Who doesn’t know what?”” I asked.

Ryan looked at me.

“He doesn’t know you found everything.””

The room became colder.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Ryan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

A man who had lied for days suddenly looked like he was afraid of saying the truth.

Claire moved toward him.

“Ryan.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You know what happens if you keep protecting him.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You have no idea what he’s capable of.””

The sentence made everyone freeze.

Because Ryan wasn’t defending himself anymore.

He was afraid of someone else.

Michael noticed too.

“Who is he?””

Ryan looked toward the door.

Then at the windows.

As if he expected someone to be watching.

“I need to leave.””

“No,” Michael said.

Ryan laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You think I’m the biggest problem here?””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“You pushed my husband down the stairs.””

Ryan flinched.

“Yes.””

The admission came so suddenly that nobody reacted at first.

Then everyone did.

Someone gasped.

Claire covered her mouth.

Michael stared at him.

“You just confessed.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I didn’t kill him.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You pushed him.””

“I pushed him because I thought he was going to expose everything.””

“Everything about what?””

Ryan looked at the phone.

Then whispered:

“About the person who made me do it.””

The room went silent again.

Michael stepped closer.

“Start talking.””

Ryan looked at me.

“I never wanted Daniel dead.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

Ryan sat down heavily in the chair.

For the first time, he looked older.

Not like the successful businessman everyone admired.

Like a man who had been running from something for too long.

“Three months ago, Daniel found out someone was using the company to move illegal money.””

Michael frowned.

“Who?””

Ryan looked away.

“I don’t know his real name.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“But you know him.””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“He contacted me first.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I owed money.””

Nobody spoke.

Ryan continued.

“I made bad investments. I thought I could fix everything before Daniel noticed.””

“You stole from him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was disturbing.

“I thought I could replace it.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

Ryan looked down.

“I couldn’t.””

The room stayed quiet.

Then Madison spoke.

“But Daddy found out.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ryan’s face changed.

“Yes.””

Her voice was small.

“What happened after that?””

Ryan stared at her.

For a moment, he looked ashamed.

“Your father wanted to go to the police.””

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

“He should have.””

Ryan looked away.

“I know.””

That was the first time I believed he understood what he had done.

Not because he was sorry.

Because he looked terrified.

“Who is this person?”” Michael asked again.

Ryan shook his head.

“I only ever spoke to him through calls.””

“What name did he use?””

Ryan hesitated.

Then:

“Ethan.””

Claire went completely still.

The reaction was immediate.

Michael noticed.

“Claire?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire, you know that name?””

Her face turned pale.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She swallowed.

“Because Daniel mentioned him.””

A chill moved through me.

“When?””

“The night before he died.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“He said Ryan wasn’t the person he was most afraid of.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Ryan nodded.

“Daniel figured it out.””

“Figured what out?””

“That I wasn’t acting alone.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Madison suddenly walked toward the laptop.

She looked at the frozen image of her father.

“Daddy knew.””

I knelt beside her.

“What did he know, sweetheart?””

She touched the screen.

“He knew someone else was there.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Madison’s eyes moved to me.

“He told me.””

The room went quiet.

“What did he tell you?””

She looked down.

“Two nights before he died, Daddy woke me up.””

My heart tightened.

“He came into my room.””

She swallowed.

“He thought I was asleep.””

I felt tears forming.

“What did he do?””

“He put something under my pillow.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

Madison reached into her dress pocket.

My breath caught.

She pulled out a tiny memory card.

“I forgot about it.””

Michael immediately took it.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Madison looked ashamed.

“Because Daddy said only give it to Mommy if Uncle Ryan comes.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel.

Even at the end, he had been trying to protect us.

Michael inserted the card into the laptop.

A video appeared.

The file name was simple.

*M.*

Madison sat beside me.

I held her hand.

The video opened.

Daniel appeared.

But this time, he wasn’t sitting at his desk.

He was in Madison’s bedroom.

The camera was low quality.

Hidden.

He was speaking quietly.

“If you’re watching this, Madison probably already knows something is wrong.””

My daughter covered her mouth.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry, princess.””

The tears came immediately.

“I wanted to keep you safe.””

He looked toward the camera.

Then whispered:

“There is someone helping Ryan.””

My eyes moved to Ryan.

He looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Ryan is scared. But fear doesn’t make someone innocent.””

A pause.

Then:

“The person behind this is someone we trusted.””

The video glitched.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I need Emma to know something.””

My heart stopped.

“He didn’t fall.””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“He was pushed.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

The funeral home disappeared into darkness.

Someone screamed.

A chair scraped across the floor.

I grabbed Madison.

“Stay with me.””

Emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Unnatural.

Michael looked around.

“The door.””

The office door was open.

It had been locked.

Ryan was gone.

My blood ran cold.

“He escaped.””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Ryan didn’t escape.””

“What do you mean?””

She pointed at the security monitor.

The screen had turned back on.

A single camera feed appeared.

The funeral home entrance.

Ryan was standing there.

But he wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind him.

Tall.

Wearing a black coat.

The camera angle was too dark to see his face.

Then Ryan turned around.

The man whispered something.

Ryan looked terrified.

And then the stranger slowly raised his head toward the camera.

Like he knew we were watching.

Like he wanted us to see him.

The image sharpened for one second.

Just enough.

Just enough for Claire to gasp.

“No…”

I looked at her.

“Who is he?””

Her face had gone completely white.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is he?””

She stared at the screen.

Then whispered the name that made my entire body go cold.

“Daniel’s father.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“Emma…”

Her voice shook.

“Daniel’s father died fifteen years ago.””

The monitor flickered.

The man disappeared.

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence appeared.

*You wanted the truth about Daniel? Come alone.*

Below it was an address.

May you like

And beneath the address were four words.

*I’m waiting, my love.*
