Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Kept
I read the message again.
Then again.
*Emma, don’t trust anyone who loved me.*
My fingers trembled.
Daniel’s number.
Not Ryan’s.
Not an unknown number.
Daniel’s.
A number that had been disconnected the day after his death.
A number that was supposed to belong to a man who no longer existed.
I stood alone in the old Clarke house, holding a photograph that had just shattered everything I believed about my family.
My mother.
Daniel.
Ryan.
The same house.
The same day.
The same secret.
I wanted to call someone.
Anyone.
But who?
Michael?
He was Daniel’s attorney.
Claire?
She had hidden things from me.
Ryan?
He had murdered my husband.
And my mother…
My mother had apparently known something for years.
I looked at the photograph again.
Her younger face stared back at me.
She was smiling.
Standing beside Daniel and Ryan like they were family.
Like they belonged together.
But my mother had never mentioned this house.
Not once.
I heard a noise behind me.
I turned quickly.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
I held my phone like it was the only weapon I had.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Emma.””
I froze.
“Mom?””
She stepped into the light.
My mother.
Evelyn Carter.
The woman who had comforted me at Daniel’s funeral.
The woman who cried when she saw my daughter beside the coffin.
The woman who told me she would help me through anything.
She looked exhausted.
Older than she had looked that morning.
And terrified.
“What are you doing here?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes went to the photograph in my hand.
And I watched the exact moment she realized I knew.
“You found it.””
The words hurt more than anger would have.
Because they meant she had been waiting for this moment.
“You knew.””
My mother swallowed.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew about this house.””
She looked away.
“You knew Daniel’s father was alive.””
Silence.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
I felt something inside me break.
“How long?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Years.””
I laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
“Years?””
“Emma, please.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“My husband died three days ago.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“My daughter watched them put him in a coffin.””
My mother looked devastated.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice rose.
“Do you know what it feels like to explain to an eight-year-old that her father isn’t coming home?””
“Emma…”
“You sat beside me.””
I pointed at her.
“You held my hand.””
My mother started crying.
“Because I love you.””
“Then why did you lie?””
She looked down.
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“Daniel came to me before he died.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“The night before.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did he say?””
My mother walked slowly toward the fireplace.
“He told me everything was about to fall apart.””
“Everything?””
“He knew Ryan was involved.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone knew something except me.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I wiped my tears.
“I want the truth.””
My mother looked at me.
And for the first time, she didn’t look like my mother.
She looked like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“Daniel discovered who his father really was.””
I stared at her.
“His father.””
“Yes.””
“The man who supposedly died fifteen years ago.””
She nodded.
“But Daniel didn’t know the truth until recently.””
“What truth?””
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
“His father didn’t die.””
I already knew that.
“Tell me something I don’t know.””
Her face tightened.
“He disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel’s father was involved in something dangerous.””
“What?””
My mother looked toward the photograph.
“He was connected to a financial crime network.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
She paused.
“Because the worst part is…”
She looked at me.
“Daniel’s father wasn’t the only one who disappeared.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
My mother sat down.
“When Daniel was twenty-two, he found documents proving his father had been moving money through different companies.””
“Including Clarke Design Group?””
She nodded.
“He confronted him.””
“And?””
“His father threatened him.””
I felt sick.
“So Daniel cut him off.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he come back?””
My mother looked at the photograph.
“Because Ryan contacted him.””
Everything clicked.
Ryan.
The missing money.
The secret calls.
The fear.
“Ryan brought him back.””
My mother nodded.
“He thought he could use his father to fix his problems.””
“And Daniel found out.””
“Yes.””
I walked away.
My entire marriage suddenly felt like a room full of locked doors.
I had loved Daniel.
I knew him.
At least I thought I did.
But how many secrets had he carried?
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
My mother’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because he was afraid you would become a target.””
I turned.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice softened.
“No, it isn’t.””
I looked at the photograph.
“If he loved me, he should have trusted me.””
My mother nodded slowly.
“Maybe.””
The answer surprised me.
“But Daniel made mistakes too.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
My mother immediately stood.
“He’s here.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She just grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.””
“Who is here?””
Then I heard it.
A voice from outside.
A voice I knew.
A voice that made my entire body freeze.
“Emma.””
Daniel.
I ran toward the door.
“Daniel?””
My mother grabbed me.
“No.””
I pulled away.
“That’s him.””
“No, Emma.””
She looked terrified.
“That’s exactly what they want you to think.””
The front door opened slowly.
A man stepped inside.
For one second, my heart believed.
Because it was him.
The same height.
The same dark hair.
The same face.
Older.
Tired.
But Daniel.
My knees almost collapsed.
“Daniel…”
He looked at me.
And tears filled his eyes.
“Emma.””
I covered my mouth.
Everything inside me screamed to run toward him.
To touch him.
To prove he was real.
But my mother’s words stopped me.
*That’s exactly what they want you to think.*
Daniel took a step closer.
“I know this is impossible.””
I couldn’t speak.
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
Then at my mother.
“You told her.””
My mother didn’t answer.
Daniel looked back at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The words I had dreamed of hearing.
The words I had wanted since the funeral.
But something was wrong.
Something about him.
Something in his eyes.
Because Daniel looked at me like he was saying goodbye.
Not hello.
“Are you alive?”” I whispered.
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me bury you?””
Pain crossed his face.
“Because I had no choice.””
I laughed through tears.
“No choice?””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You let our daughter think you were dead.””
His face broke.
“I know.””
“You let me mourn you.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe someone killed you.””
His eyes moved away.
And that told me everything.
“You know who did it.””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
The room became still.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the doorway.
Toward the darkness outside.
Then back at me.
“Someone you trust.””
My heart sank.
“My mother?””
“No.””
“Michael?””
“No.””
“Claire?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Then who?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Emma…”
He stepped closer.
“The person who ordered Ryan to push me…”
He stopped.
My breathing became shallow.
“Was your father?””
Daniel looked at me.
And slowly shook his head.
“No.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
At my mother.
At the house.
Then he said the one thing I never expected.
“The person who wanted me gone…”
His voice broke.
“Was your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
And before I could ask another question, every light in the house turned on.
A voice came from upstairs.
A voice we all recognized.
“You should have listened to me, Daniel.””
Everyone looked up.
Ryan’s father stood on the balcony.
Holding a gun.
And beside him…
Was Michael Harris.
The family attorney.
Alive.
May you like
Smiling.
And holding the same silver key Madison pulled from Daniel’s coffin.
