Chapter 8: The Memory That Was Erased

I stared at the phone in Daniel’s hand.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at the message.

*Emma never made it out of the accident.*

The words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

I was standing right there.

I was alive.

I could feel the cold floor beneath my feet.

I could hear Madison breathing beside me.

I could hear Daniel’s heartbeat when he grabbed my shoulders.

“Don’t listen to it,” I whispered.

But my own voice sounded uncertain.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“Daniel?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“There are things I never told you.””

My chest tightened.

“More secrets?””

The pain in my voice made him look away.

“I know how that sounds.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked at me.

“I spent three days believing you were dead.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“I watched people bury you.””

“I know.””

“I watched Madison stand beside your coffin.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

“Then don’t stand there and tell me there are more things you hid from me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That word means nothing anymore.””

Behind us, my mother quietly cried.

Madison stood between us, looking from me to Daniel.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately turned.

His expression changed.

The anger.

The fear.

The guilt.

Everything disappeared.

Because he was looking at his daughter.

“Come here, princess.””

Madison hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then she ran to him.

Daniel dropped to his knees and held her like he was afraid she would disappear.

“I missed you.””

Madison buried her face in his shoulder.

“I thought you left me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You promised you wouldn’t.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that could fix what he had done.

My mother touched my arm.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

“What does he mean?””

She looked at the phone.

“I think it’s time you knew.””

Daniel slowly stood.

The secret passage behind us felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in.

“Fifteen years ago,” my mother said, “before you met Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What about fifteen years ago?””

She swallowed.

“You were in an accident.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t remember.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You wouldn’t.””

“Why?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Because we made sure you didn’t.””

I felt sick.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

The fear in my chest was becoming something unbearable.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked at my mother.

She nodded.

“Your father was involved with Ethan Clarke.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother looked down.

“Because your father was one of the people who helped Ethan hide money.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

She continued.

“When you found out, you tried to expose them.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

My mother started crying.

“Because the night you were supposed to tell the police…”

She stopped.

Daniel finished for her.

“You crashed.””

The word hit me.

Crashed.

A memory flashed.

A road.

Rain.

Headlights.

A hand gripping mine.

Then nothing.

I grabbed my head.

A sharp pain moved through my skull.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emma.””

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

“Why don’t I remember?””

My mother whispered:

“Because you almost died.””

Silence.

“Daniel found you.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He was the one who saved you.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I pulled you out of the car.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His face changed.

“Because Ethan found out you survived.””

My breathing stopped.

“He threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“He threatened me?””

Daniel looked down.

“He told me if I ever told you the truth, he would finish what he started.””

I looked at my mother.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“We all knew.””

A painful silence followed.

All these years.

My entire life.

Built on missing pieces.

“But why did I marry you?””

Daniel looked at me.

Because that was the question.

The one I had not wanted to ask.

“If I saved you…”

My voice trembled.

“Did you know me before we met?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I stepped away.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my memories were gone.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me fall in love with you?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I fell in love with you first.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

“No.””

He looked broken.

“It doesn’t.””

The passage became silent.

Then Madison spoke.

“But Daddy loves Mommy.””

Everyone turned.

She wiped her tears.

“I know.””

Daniel looked at her.

Madison continued:

“Because he always looked at her like he was trying to remember something.””

My heart broke.

Because she was right.

There were moments.

Small moments.

Daniel staring at me while I cooked.

Daniel holding my hand too tightly when we passed certain streets.

Daniel waking up from nightmares and refusing to explain.

I thought those were just pieces of him.

I never knew they were pieces of us.

A sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Everyone froze.

Not Daniel’s.

Mine.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Daniel immediately said:

“Don’t answer.””

But I already knew.

Someone wanted us to.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

But somehow recognized.

“Emma.””

My blood turned cold.

Because it was my father.

“Dad?””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Hang up.””

But I couldn’t move.

My father had been dead for twelve years.

Yet his voice was coming through the phone.

“I know you’re confused.””

I couldn’t speak.

“You deserve the truth.””

My mother whispered:

“No…”

My father continued.

“Daniel told you about the accident.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You’re listening to the wrong person.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What are you doing?””

My father laughed softly.

“Still protecting her?””

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

“You’re dead.””

“Yes.””

The answer was calm.

Too calm.

“But unlike Ethan, I know when to stay hidden.””

I felt dizzy.

“What does that mean?””

My father sighed.

“It means everyone you trusted lied.””

Daniel took the phone from me.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Ask Emma about the night she chose Daniel.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My father continued.

“She doesn’t remember because Daniel made sure she forgot.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“That’s not true.””

The phone crackled.

“Isn’t it?””

Nobody spoke.

My father’s voice became softer.

“Ask him why your wedding photo has a date from before your accident.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked away.

And that was enough.

Because I saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The truth.

My father continued:

“Ask him why Madison’s birth certificate was changed.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“Madison?””

Daniel immediately said:

“Don’t listen.””

But the damage was done.

My father whispered:

“Ask him who your daughter’s real father is.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Madison looked confused.

“Mommy?””

I looked at Daniel.

The man I had loved.

The man I had lost.

The man who had come back from the dead.

And for the first time…

I wondered if he had ever truly been mine.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma, whatever he says—”

I stepped back.

“Tell me.””

“Please.””

“Tell me the truth.””

His silence answered before his words did.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Madison is not the only child Ethan Clarke ever tried to hide.””

The lights above us flickered.

And from somewhere deep inside the house…

A child’s voice called out.

“Mommy?””

Madison turned.

Because the voice sounded exactly like hers.

May you like

But younger.

And it came from a room that had been locked for fifteen years.
