Chapter 7: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much

The sight of Michael standing beside Daniel’s father destroyed the last piece of certainty I had left.

For days, I had believed Michael was the one person who could help us.

The calm voice.

The logical mind.

The man who opened the lockbox.

The man who uncovered the truth.

But now he stood above us in the old Clarke house, holding the same silver key my daughter had pulled from her father’s coffin.

And he was smiling.

Not nervously.

Not sadly.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Madison grabbed my hand.

“Mommy…”

I looked down at her.

Her face was pale.

She was eight years old.

Eight years old, and she had already learned that adults could lie better than anyone.

“Stay behind me,” I whispered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Michael.””

The attorney tilted his head.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Hearing him say Daniel’s name so casually made my stomach twist.

Daniel looked at him with something I had never seen before.

Hatred.

“You were supposed to protect them.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“I did protect them.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You protected yourself.””

The older man beside Michael lowered the gun slightly.

“You always were dramatic, Daniel.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward him.

“Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

So this was him.

The name Ryan had whispered.

The man behind everything.

The man who had been controlling the family from the shadows.

Ethan Clarke.

Daniel’s father.

The man who was supposed to have died fifteen years ago.

“You came back,” Daniel said.

Ethan smiled.

“I never left.””

Those words settled over the room like poison.

My mother moved closer to me.

“Emma, listen carefully.””

I looked at her.

“If something happens, take Madison and run.””

I almost laughed.

Run?

From what?

A man who had spent years hiding?

An attorney who had betrayed us?

A family full of secrets?

There was nowhere left to run.

“Why?”” I asked.

My voice shook.

“Why did everyone keep lying to me?””

Nobody answered.

So I looked at Daniel.

“You first.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You had years.””

“I know.””

“You let me love you while you were hiding an entire life.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

That answer hurt more than an excuse.

Because he wasn’t denying it.

He knew.

He knew he had failed me.

Ethan looked amused.

“Still blaming yourself, Daniel?””

Daniel turned toward him.

“This isn’t about me.””

“Oh, it is.””

Ethan walked slowly down the stairs.

“You always thought you were different from me.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“I am.””

Ethan smiled.

“Are you?””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

Something about Ethan’s confidence bothered me.

He wasn’t acting like a criminal caught in a trap.

He was acting like someone who still had control.

Michael stepped forward.

“Daniel, you should have stayed hidden.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You helped him.””

Michael shrugged.

“I helped myself.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You knew,” I said.

Michael looked at me.

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew Daniel was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Ryan pushed him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my daughter was carrying evidence.””

Michael looked toward Madison.

“Yes.””

The anger inside me became something else.

Something colder.

“You watched us suffer.””

Michael didn’t look away.

“I watched you survive.””

I hated how calm he sounded.

Like he was discussing paperwork.

Daniel moved toward him.

“You used my family.””

“No.””

Michael smiled.

“I used your weaknesses.””

Daniel stopped.

Michael continued.

“You were too emotional.””

“You mean I loved them.””

“I mean you were predictable.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You helped Ethan destroy his own son.””

Michael looked at her.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Daniel was never the target.””

Everyone became still.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Michael looked at Ethan.

Then back at us.

“The target was the company.””

“No,” Daniel said.

Michael shook his head.

“And the money.””

“No.””

“And the evidence.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Michael smiled.

“I’m saying your father never cared about you.””

Ethan’s face darkened.

“Enough.””

For the first time, Michael looked nervous.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Ethan turned the gun toward him.

“Do not forget who gave you everything.””

Michael immediately became quiet.

That was when I understood.

Michael wasn’t the leader.

He was afraid too.

Daniel noticed.

“So you’re just another person he controls.””

Ethan smiled.

“Everyone is controlled by something.””

His eyes moved to Madison.

“Fear.””

My entire body went cold.

Daniel moved instantly.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You always did have one weakness.””

“Don’t.””

“Your family.””

Madison held onto my hand tighter.

Daniel stepped between us.

“You want me?””

Ethan smiled.

“Finally.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw something in his eyes.

A decision.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel.””

He whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke.

Because I knew that look.

He was preparing to sacrifice himself.

Again.

I stepped in front of him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I stared at Ethan.

“You already took my husband once.””

My voice shook.

“But you’re not taking him again.””

Ethan laughed.

“You think courage changes anything?””

“No.””

I looked at Michael.

Then Ryan’s father.

Then the room full of people who had lied.

“But truth does.””

Ethan’s smile faded.

I continued.

“Daniel’s recordings exist.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Claire copied everything.””

A lie.

But it worked.

Everyone reacted.

Especially Michael.

Daniel looked at me.

He understood immediately.

There was no copy.

Not that I knew of.

But we needed time.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re bluffing.””

“Am I?””

I looked at Michael.

“You were there when Daniel made the backup.””

Michael went still.

A tiny mistake.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

Daniel saw it too.

“You didn’t know about the backup.””

Michael looked away.

Ethan turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

Michael hesitated.

And Ethan noticed.

The balance of power shifted.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Michael slowly lowered his weapon.

“I can explain.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You’d better.””

Then everything happened at once.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Glass shattered.

The lights flickered.

Someone shouted.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“Now.””

We ran.

My mother pulled Madison behind us.

The house exploded into chaos.

Footsteps.

Shouting.

Doors slamming.

I didn’t know who was fighting who.

I only knew we had seconds.

We reached the back hallway.

Daniel opened a hidden door behind an old bookshelf.

I stared.

“You knew about this?””

He nodded.

“My father built it.””

We rushed inside.

The narrow passage smelled like dust and old wood.

Behind us, Ethan shouted.

“Daniel!””

Daniel stopped.

For one second.

Then he looked back.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I need to know something.””

“What?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Before all of this happened…”

He swallowed.

“Did you ever stop loving me?””

The question broke me.

Because after everything—

The lies.

The secrets.

The pain.

The answer was still simple.

“No.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then we heard a sound behind us.

A phone ringing.

Not mine.

Not Madison’s.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

His face changed.

He pulled out an old phone.

A phone that looked exactly like the one from the lockbox.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

*EMMA CLARKE*

Daniel stared at it.

“That’s impossible.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I never gave anyone this number.””

The phone stopped ringing.

Then a message appeared.

A message from me.

From my own number.

*Daniel, if you are seeing this, you need to know the truth. Emma never made it out of the accident.*

I stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

And slowly, his face filled with horror.

“Emma…”

“What?””

May you like

He whispered:

“This isn’t the first time we’ve lived through this.””
