Chapter 10: The Marriage Built on a Lie

Daniel had negotiated billion-dollar deals with less difficulty than he faced opening the folder Detective Grant had delivered to his attorney.

Inside were financial records, old correspondence, and copies of documents that appeared to connect Vanessa Carter and Michael Sterling to an attempted restructuring of the Carter family trust nearly four years earlier.

Four years.

Before the wedding. Before Vanessa moved into his house. Before she began calling Maya her daughter.

Daniel sat in Richard Hale's office, staring at the dates.

“Tell me I'm misunderstanding something,” he said.

Richard adjusted his glasses.

“The records suggest that someone explored gaining control over the family trust before you married Vanessa. They don't establish that she entered the relationship for that purpose, but the timing is concerning.””

“Michael introduced us.””

“Yes.””

“He told me Vanessa was kind. He told me she had spent years volunteering for children's charities. He told me she understood what it meant to lose someone.””

Richard folded his hands.

“Daniel, we need to separate what we know from what we suspect.””

Daniel pushed a document across the desk.

“This email is dated six months before our wedding. Vanessa wrote, ‘Once the family accepts me, the rest will be easier.’ Michael replied, ‘Patience. Daniel doesn't like feeling managed.’”

Richard read it carefully.

“Have the investigators authenticated the messages?””

“They're working on it.””

“Then we preserve everything and let them establish the facts.””

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

Below him, Manhattan moved through its usual afternoon chaos. Taxis honked. Pedestrians hurried across intersections. Somewhere, a child was probably complaining about homework while a parent promised to make dinner.

His daughter had spent years wondering whether she deserved breakfast.

He turned away from the window.

“I want Vanessa removed from every position that gives her access to Maya's financial records.””

“We're already reviewing those permissions. Any changes will be made through the appropriate legal process.””

“And the house?””

“Ownership is a separate matter. You can change access arrangements where legally permitted, but we need to avoid actions that interfere with the investigation.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then do everything properly. I don't want Vanessa claiming I fabricated evidence because I acted out of anger.””

Richard gave him a measured look.

“That's the first sensible thing you've said all morning.””

Daniel almost smiled.

Almost.

His phone rang.

Claire.

“How is Maya?”” she asked.

“Resting. The doctors are discussing her discharge plan.””

“Good. She asked me to bring her a purple sweater.””

“I'll get it.””

“Daniel, she asked me because she wants to know that I'll come back.””

The words silenced him.

Claire continued gently.

“She needs consistency. Not promises made in a crisis.””

“I know.””

“Then show her.””

After the call, Daniel drove to Eleanor's house, collected the sweater, and returned to the hospital.

Maya was sitting at a small table with a puzzle. Her hospital bracelet hung loosely around her wrist.

When he entered, she looked up.

“Did you bring it?””

He held up the purple sweater.

Maya smiled.

“Thank you.””

She put it on immediately, even though the room was warm.

“Can I keep it at your house?””

“Of course.””

“Our house?””

Daniel paused.

Maya noticed.

“Is it not our house anymore?””

He crouched beside her.

“It's still your home, sweetheart. But we're going to make sure it's safe before we decide where you'll stay.””

“Will Vanessa be there?””

“Not while the safety plan is being worked out.””

Maya looked down at her sleeves.

“Good.””

She said it so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.

He sat beside her.

“Do you want to tell me what you're thinking?””

Maya shook her head.

“That's okay. You don't have to talk.””

She picked up a puzzle piece, tried to fit it into the wrong space, then set it down.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“If Vanessa says she's sorry, does that mean everything goes back to normal?””

Daniel considered his answer.

“No. An apology doesn't erase what happened. People have to take responsibility for their choices, and trust takes time to rebuild.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Then I don't want to go back to normal.””

Daniel took her hand.

“Neither do I.””

That evening, Detective Grant called with an update.

The investigators had interviewed two former employees of Sterling Holdings. One recalled Vanessa visiting Michael's office shortly before her engagement to Daniel. Another remembered being asked to prepare financial projections involving the Carter estate.

Neither employee could confirm that a crime had occurred, but their statements supported the need for further investigation.

There was more.

The trust documents contained references to a private holding company called Northbridge Advisory. Its listed director was a man named Peter Vale, who had served as a financial consultant to both Michael and Vanessa.

Daniel recognized the name.

Peter had attended his wedding.

He had delivered a toast about loyalty and the importance of family.

“Do you have a current address for him?”” Daniel asked.

“We do,” Detective Grant replied.

“We're arranging an interview. We advise you not to contact him directly.””

“I won't.””

After the call, Daniel sat alone in his study at home.

For the first time since Maya's collapse, he had returned to the house.

The dining room had been cleaned. The broken vase was gone. A faint scratch remained on the marble where one of the larger fragments had struck the floor.

Daniel ran his fingers over the mark.

He could still hear Maya whispering, I didn't do it.

His phone buzzed.

An email from an unknown sender appeared.

*You want to know why Vanessa married you? Ask Peter Vale about the money transferred after Emily's funeral.*

Daniel stared at the message.

He forwarded it to Detective Grant without responding.

Then he heard footsteps behind him.

His housekeeper, Mrs. Alvarez, stood in the doorway.

“Mr. Carter? I'm sorry to disturb you.””

“What is it?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you should know that Mrs. Carter asked me to pack Maya's belongings last week.””

Daniel turned.

“Last week?””

“Yes, sir. She said Maya would be moving to a different school and that you had approved everything.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What did you pack?””

“Some clothes, books, and the things from her desk. I didn't finish because I wasn't sure what to do with her mother's photographs.””

“Where are they?””

“In the storage room. I kept them separate.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Mrs. Alvarez hesitated.

“There's something else, sir. Mrs. Carter asked me to find Maya's passport and birth certificate. She said she needed them for a family trip.””

Daniel went still.

“Did she take them?””

“No. I couldn't find the passport. But I found a photocopy of Maya's birth certificate in Mrs. Carter's office.””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Vanessa had been preparing to move his daughter somewhere.

He didn't know where, and he wouldn't speculate. But the possibility that she had intended to remove Maya from his care made his hands shake.

“Mrs. Alvarez, please write down everything you remember and provide it to the investigators. Don't discuss it with anyone else.””

“Yes, sir.””

When she left, Daniel called Richard.

“Vanessa was gathering Maya's documents and packing her belongings before the hospital incident.””

Richard's voice sharpened.

“Did she say why?””

“She claimed I had approved a school transfer.””

“Do you have evidence of that?””

“The housekeeper is willing to provide a statement.””

“Then we'll add it to the record. Don't assume what she intended until the investigators can establish it.””

Daniel looked at the empty dining room.

“I won't.””

The following morning, Maya was cleared for discharge under a safety plan that placed her with Daniel and required follow-up care. The hospital team provided instructions for medical appointments and counseling, while the child-protection specialist arranged continued monitoring.

Daniel brought her home through the side entrance to avoid the reporters who had begun gathering outside the estate.

Maya held his hand tightly.

“Is everyone going to look at me?””

“Some people may ask questions. You don't owe anyone an explanation.””

“What if they say I'm a liar?””

Daniel stopped walking.

“Then they will be wrong.””

She looked at him.

“Even if Vanessa tells them?””

“Even then.””

He guided her upstairs to a guest suite near his bedroom. It had fresh sheets, a bookshelf, a desk, and a window overlooking the garden.

Maya looked around.

“Is this my room?””

“For now. We can make it whatever you want.””

She walked to the bed and touched the blanket.

“Can I lock the door?””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Yes. You can have a lock, and you'll have the key. No one will enter without knocking unless there's an emergency.””

Maya nodded.

Then she noticed a small box on the desk.

Inside were the photographs recovered from the storage room, including one of Emily holding her as a baby.

Maya lifted it carefully.

“You found them.””

“I did.””

She pressed the photograph to her chest.

Then she turned toward him.

“Daddy, are you going to make Vanessa leave forever?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“I can't decide everything about the future today. But I can promise that your safety comes first, and no one will force you to be around someone who makes you afraid.””

Maya considered this, then stepped forward and hugged him.

He held her until she was ready to let go.

That night, after Maya had fallen asleep, Daniel returned to his study.

A message from Detective Grant was waiting.

*We located Peter Vale. He has agreed to cooperate and provided a statement concerning the Northbridge Advisory accounts. His statement raises a new question about Vanessa's relationship with Michael Sterling.*

Daniel opened the attached summary.

The final paragraph contained one sentence.

According to Vale, Vanessa and Michael did not end their relationship when she became engaged to Daniel Carter.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*Vale also claims that Michael promised Vanessa a share of the Carter estate if she secured control of the family trust.*

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

He had spent years believing he had married a woman who loved him.

Now he was beginning to understand that he might have been the prize in someone else's plan.

But the final line of Vale's statement was even more disturbing.

He says the arrangement changed after Emily discovered the original documents.

Daniel read it twice.

May you like

Because if Peter Vale was telling the truth, then Emily's death had interrupted something much larger than a financial scheme.

And someone had been trying to finish what they started.
