Chapter 7: The Man Who Helped Her Hide the Truth
Daniel read the security report again, hoping the words would somehow change.
Michael Sterling had visited his estate three days before Emily died.
Vanessa had met him privately.
And someone had written that they had agreed to keep a secret.
For years, Michael had been more than a business partner. He had been Daniel's closest friend, the man who stood beside him when his company nearly collapsed, the man who helped him bury his wife, and the man who had introduced him to Vanessa.
Daniel had trusted him with everything.
Apparently, that trust had been misplaced.
“Marcus,” Daniel said, his voice dangerously calm, “I want every record connected to Michael's visits. Gate logs, visitor registrations, security footage, everything.””
“Some of the footage is no longer available, sir. The system was upgraded twice.””
“Then find the backups.””
“Yes, sir.””
“And don't contact Michael.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Understood.””
Daniel ended the call and looked at Claire, who was still on the phone.
“Do you know what Vanessa and Michael agreed to?””
“No,” Claire replied.
“But I know Emily was frightened.””
“Why didn't you tell me any of this three years ago?””
“Because you wouldn't listen.””
Her answer stung because he knew it was true.
Claire continued, her voice trembling with restrained anger.
“When I tried to tell you I didn't trust Vanessa, you accused me of being jealous because Emily had asked me to help with Maya. You said I was interfering with your marriage.””
“I was grieving.””
“So was I! Emily was my sister, Daniel. I lost her too. But I was expected to stand outside your house and watch you build a new life with someone who wanted my niece out of the picture.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
“You keep saying that. What are you going to do differently?””
He looked toward the hospital in the distance, though he could not see it from Eleanor's study.
“I'm going to believe my daughter.””
For a moment, Claire said nothing.
Then her voice softened slightly.
“That's a start.””
Daniel returned to the hospital before sunrise.
Maya was awake, sitting beside Eleanor while a nurse checked her blood pressure. When she saw him, she smiled cautiously.
“Daddy, did you go home?””
“I went to Grandma's house. I found something your mother left behind.””
Maya's expression changed.
“Something from Mommy?””
Daniel sat beside her and took out a photograph that Eleanor had kept separately from the damaged box. It showed Emily sitting on a blanket beneath an apple tree, holding a baby Maya against her chest.
Maya touched the photograph with one finger.
“That's me?””
“That's you.””
“Mommy looks happy.””
“She was.””
Maya stared at the photograph for a long time.
“Can I keep it?””
“It's yours.””
She hugged it against her chest.
Then Daniel told her that her aunt Claire might come to visit.
Maya looked up sharply.
“Aunt Claire?””
“You remember her?””
Maya nodded.
“She used to read me stories about a little bear who got lost.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“That's right.””
“Why doesn't she come anymore?””
He could have blamed distance, work, or misunderstandings.
Instead, he told her the truth.
“I made some mistakes. I didn't understand how important it was for you to have your family around you. I'm trying to fix that now.””
Maya thought about this.
“Is she angry with me?””
“No, sweetheart. She's not angry with you.””
“Will she believe me?””
Daniel took her hand.
“She already wants to help.””
Maya looked down at the photograph.
“Then I want to see her.””
Claire arrived that afternoon.
She entered the hospital room carrying a stuffed bear and a paper bag filled with Maya's favorite snacks. Her hair was shorter than Daniel remembered, and there were silver strands near her temples.
She stopped just inside the doorway.
Maya stared at her.
For a few seconds, neither moved.
Then Claire knelt beside the bed.
“Hello, little bear.””
Maya's face crumpled.
“Aunt Claire?””
Claire opened her arms.
Maya reached for her.
They held each other while Claire cried into the girl's hair.
“I'm sorry I wasn't here,” Claire whispered.
“I'm so sorry.””
Maya clutched her coat.
“I thought you forgot me.””
“Never.””
“Vanessa said you didn't want me anymore.””
Claire pulled back, holding Maya's face gently between her hands.
“Listen to me. I have never stopped loving you. Not for one second.””
Maya began to cry harder.
Daniel stood near the window, unable to look away.
This was what his daughter had needed.
Not another expensive toy. Not another vacation.
Someone who could make her feel wanted without asking her to prove she deserved it.
After Claire had spent an hour with Maya, she joined Daniel and Eleanor in the hospital's family consultation room.
“I want to tell you what I found,” Claire said.
She opened a folder and placed several printed documents on the table.
“After Emily died, I looked into Vanessa's background. I discovered she had been engaged to Michael Sterling for almost a year. They broke up shortly before he introduced her to you.””
Daniel frowned.
“Michael told me he'd met Vanessa through the charity board.””
“He may have. But their relationship began earlier.””
Claire slid another document across the table.
“This is a copy of an old court filing. Vanessa's former fiancé had accused her of accessing financial documents without permission. The case was settled privately, and the complaint was withdrawn.””
Daniel scanned the page.
“Why didn't this come up when we did the background checks?””
“Because the complaint was withdrawn before the investigation went very far. It wasn't a criminal conviction, and the settlement records were difficult to locate.””
Eleanor leaned forward.
“What does Michael have to do with any of this?””
Claire opened the final document.
“A month before Emily died, she discovered that someone had attempted to access the Carter family trust through an outside financial adviser. She suspected Michael was involved, but she couldn't prove it.””
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Did she tell you that?””
“She told me she had found a discrepancy. She said she would speak to you when she had the evidence.””
“But she died before she could.””
Claire nodded.
“Three days before her death, she called me. She sounded frightened. She said she had found a document that could expose someone she trusted.””
Daniel stared at the paper.
“Did she name Michael?””
“No. But she asked me to keep Maya safe if anything happened to her.””
Silence settled over the room.
Daniel thought about the visitor log.
Michael had been in the house three days before Emily died. Vanessa had met him privately. Emily had found something suspicious, and then she was gone.
He refused to jump to conclusions about Emily's death. There could be innocent explanations for some of the details.
But the pattern demanded an investigation.
“I'm taking this to the police,” he said.
Claire nodded.
“Good.””
Daniel's phone rang.
It was Richard.
“Daniel, we received a response from the trust administrator. The disputed amendment was prepared using a document template associated with Sterling Holdings.””
Daniel stood.
“Michael's company?””
“Yes. We haven't established who prepared it, but the connection is real.””
“Send everything to the investigators.””
“I will.””
Before Daniel could say anything else, another call came through.
This time, it was the hospital's safeguarding coordinator.
“Mr. Carter, I'm calling because Vanessa has contacted the hospital several times asking to speak with Maya.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What did you tell her?””
“That contact would need to be handled according to the safeguarding plan. She became upset and insisted she had parental authority.””
“She is not Maya's mother.””
“We've documented the calls.””
Daniel thanked the coordinator and ended the call.
Claire watched him.
“What is it?””
“Vanessa is trying to reach Maya.””
Claire's face tightened.
“Then we need to make sure she can't frighten her again.””
Daniel looked through the glass at his daughter, who was showing Eleanor the photograph of Emily.
For the first time in years, Maya was surrounded by people who believed her.
But Daniel knew Vanessa wouldn't give up easily.
And when his phone rang again, the name on the screen confirmed his suspicion.
*Michael Sterling.*
Daniel answered.
“Michael.””
“Daniel, my friend. I've heard some disturbing things. Vanessa tells me you're making accusations against her.””
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“How did Vanessa know what I was investigating?””
A pause.
Then Michael laughed softly.
“Because she called me. She says you're threatening to destroy your marriage over a child's misunderstanding.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“Michael, were you at my house three days before Emily died?””
The laughter stopped.
For several seconds, there was no sound at all.
Then Michael said quietly, “We need to talk. And Daniel, whatever you think you've found, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
May you like
“Emily wasn't the only person who knew about the trust.””
The line went dead.
