Chapter 6: The Name on the Birth Certificate

Daniel waited until Maya was asleep before showing Eleanor the messages.

She read the first one without speaking.

At the second, the color drained from her face.

“Who sent this?”” she whispered.

“I don't know. The number is unregistered.””

Eleanor returned the phone.

“It's probably Vanessa trying to frighten you.””

“Then tell me why you're frightened.””

His mother looked toward Maya's bed.

For several seconds, she seemed to be weighing a decision.

Finally, she sat down.

“Your wife asked me to keep a secret,” she said.

“And I promised I would.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Another secret?””

“Emily was very ill when she asked me. She was frightened about what might happen to Maya if you ever remarried someone who didn't accept her.””

“Did she know Vanessa?””

“I told you she had met her. But the concern began earlier, before you and Vanessa were serious.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that have to do with Maya's birth certificate?””

Eleanor folded her hands.

“Nothing about Maya's parentage. Your name is on her original birth certificate, and Emily never questioned that. The emergency contact was different because Emily had arranged for her sister, Claire, to be the backup guardian if something happened to both of you.””

Daniel blinked.

“Claire?””

“Your wife's sister. She lived in Oregon at the time.””

“Why was she removed?””

“She wasn't removed from Maya's life by a court order. But after Emily died, Claire and I argued about how Maya should be raised. She wanted to take Maya for a while so you could grieve.

You refused. The disagreement became ugly, and Claire stopped visiting.””

Daniel remembered the argument.

He had been devastated after Emily's funeral, barely sleeping, barely eating. Claire had suggested that Maya spend a few months with her while he recovered.

Daniel had accused her of trying to take his daughter away.

He had told her he could raise Maya himself.

Claire had left the house in tears.

He hadn't spoken to her in nearly three years.

“Why didn't you tell me Emily had named her?””

“Because you were already struggling. Claire asked me not to interfere, and I thought you needed time.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Did Claire know Vanessa was mistreating Maya?””

“I don't know.””

He looked at the second message again.

The sender had known about the original emergency contact. That information wasn't public, and it wasn't something Vanessa should have been able to access without looking through Maya's private records.

“Mom, where is Emily's document box?””

“At my house, in the locked cabinet in my study.””

“I'm going there now.””

Eleanor rose.

“I'll come with you.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Maya shouldn't wake up alone.””

“I'll stay here. You can take Marcus and Richard with you.””

He agreed, then called his attorney.

Richard answered from his office.

“I was about to call you,” he said.

“We recovered another email from Vanessa's account.””

“What does it say?””

“It was sent to Celeste Morgan shortly after the trust amendment was submitted. Vanessa asked whether the guardianship arrangement could be changed without notifying other relatives.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Was there a response?””

“Yes. Celeste advised that any change would require proper authorization and that no one should attempt to bypass the existing safeguards.””

“Did Vanessa reply?””

“She wrote, ‘Then we'll have to make Daniel believe Maya needs a different home.’”

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

“Preserve the email and send it to the investigators. Don't contact Vanessa directly.””

“Already done.””

Daniel ended the call and headed for the elevator.

On the drive to Eleanor's house, rain streaked the windows. Marcus sat in the front passenger seat, while Daniel held the photograph recovered from the fireplace.

The silver key lay in an evidence envelope beside it.

He turned the key over between his fingers.

It was small, old-fashioned, and engraved with the letter E.

“Do you recognize it?”” he asked Marcus.

“Not yet, sir. We checked the key inventory at the estate, but nothing matched.””

Daniel looked out at the dark road.

“Then we start with the box.””

Eleanor's house stood on a quiet street lined with maple trees. Daniel had visited hundreds of times over the years, but that night the familiar rooms felt different.

Eleanor's study was at the back of the house.

She had once told him that Emily used to sit by the window there, writing letters while Maya slept in a bassinet beside her.

Daniel unlocked the cabinet.

Inside sat a wooden box wrapped in a faded blue scarf.

He recognized the scarf immediately.

Emily had worn it on their first anniversary.

His fingers trembled as he removed the wrapping.

The box contained medical documents, several photographs, a sealed envelope, and a small notebook.

On the envelope, Emily had written:

*For Daniel, if Maya ever stops feeling safe.*

Daniel stared at the words.

Then he opened it.

My love,

If you're reading this, something has happened that made you question whether Maya is safe. I hope that day never comes. I hope I'm worrying about nothing, and that the world is kinder to our daughter than I fear it may be.

But if you're reading this, please don't dismiss Maya's fear simply because someone else seems respectable.

Daniel stopped.

He pressed the heel of his hand against his eyes.

Then he continued.

You are a good father. But you work too much, and when you're afraid of losing control, you sometimes trust the person who speaks most confidently.

Please remember that a quiet child may be suffering in ways she cannot explain.

Daniel lowered the letter.

The words seemed to have been written for the man he had become.

He continued reading.

There is one more thing. I asked Claire to remain Maya's emergency contact because she knows how to listen to a child without making her feel responsible for adult problems. If you ever need help, please speak to her.

And Daniel, if anyone tries to convince Maya that she must choose between being loved and telling the truth, don't let them.

She deserves both.

Daniel folded the letter carefully.

For several moments, he couldn't move.

Then Marcus cleared his throat.

“Sir, there's something beneath the notebook.””

Daniel lifted it.

A second envelope lay underneath, sealed with a strip of tape.

The writing was not Emily's.

It was Vanessa's.

Daniel stared at the name on the envelope.

*Eleanor Carter — Private.*

He looked at his mother.

“Why would Vanessa write you a letter?””

Eleanor's face had gone pale.

“I've never seen that before.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Mrs. Carter,

I know you have concerns about my relationship with Daniel. I want to reassure you that I have no interest in replacing Emily or taking anything away from Maya.

However, I will not tolerate being undermined in my own home. If you continue encouraging Maya to disregard my rules, I will have no choice but to limit your visits.

Please understand that I am doing what is best for this family.

The letter was dated six months earlier.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“You never received this?””

“No.””

“Then why was it in Emily's box?””

Eleanor examined the envelope.

“Perhaps Emily found it among her papers before she died.””

Daniel turned the page over.

At the bottom, a handwritten sentence had been added in different ink.

If Daniel asks, tell him nothing. He'll only make things worse.

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Vanessa wrote that?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I can't say for certain.””

“Who else had access to this box?””

“Only me, Emily, and Claire. I kept it locked.””

Daniel set the letter down.

He was beginning to understand that Vanessa had been working to isolate Maya from everyone who might recognize what was happening.

His mother. His late wife's sister. Even him.

But he still didn't know why.

Then he noticed a small card tucked inside the notebook.

It contained a telephone number and a name.

*Claire Whitmore.*

Beneath it, Emily had written:

If Maya ever needs someone who will believe her, call her aunt.

Daniel picked up his phone.

He searched his contacts, but Claire's number was no longer saved.

He called information through his assistant and obtained a current number.

Then he hesitated.

What if Claire refused to speak to him?

What if she blamed him for the years of silence?

He had no right to demand her help after keeping her away from Maya.

But Maya needed every safe adult he could find.

He pressed the call button.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, a woman's voice answered.

“Hello?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Claire. It's Daniel.””

Silence.

Then she spoke, her voice cold and controlled.

“What happened to Maya?””

Daniel froze.

“How did you know something was wrong?””

“Because I received a message this afternoon from an unknown number. It said Maya was in the hospital.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Claire, I need your help.””

“After three years?””

“I know.””

“You wouldn't let me see her. You told me I was trying to take your daughter away.””

“I was wrong.””

The words came out quietly.

Claire didn't respond.

Daniel continued.

“Maya has been hurt. We're investigating what happened at home, and the doctors have raised serious concerns. I found Emily's letter. She wanted you involved if Maya ever stopped feeling safe.””

Claire's breathing changed.

“Is Maya awake?””

“She was sleeping when I left the hospital.””

“Does she know you're calling me?””

“Not yet.””

“Then don't make promises on my behalf. I need to speak with her first.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Of course.””

Claire was silent for a moment.

Then she asked, “Is Vanessa still in the house?””

“No. Maya is in the hospital, and Vanessa has been told not to contact her while the investigation continues.””

“Good.””

The word was sharp enough to cut.

Daniel looked at Emily's letter.

“Claire, do you know anything about the trust amendment?””

There was a long pause.

“What amendment?””

“Someone submitted a document bearing my forged signature. It would have given Vanessa greater control over Maya's inheritance.””

Claire exhaled slowly.

“Daniel, I need to tell you something.””

He straightened.

“What?””

“Emily called me shortly before she died. She said Vanessa had been asking questions about the family, and that she was worried about Maya's future.””

Daniel felt the room grow colder.

“What exactly did Emily say?””

Claire's voice dropped.

“She told me that Vanessa wasn't the first person to try to get close to you for your money.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“What do you mean?””

“I don't know everything. Emily never had time to explain. But she asked me to look into Vanessa's past if anything ever happened to her.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Claire paused.

Then she said, “I found another name.””

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Whose name?””

“Vanessa's maiden name. And Daniel, it connects her to a family you know very well.””

He waited.

Claire's next words changed everything.

“Vanessa was engaged to your business partner before she ever met you.””

Daniel went completely still.

His business partner was Michael Sterling, the man who had stood beside him at Emily's funeral, comforted him after her death, and encouraged him to give love another chance.

The same man who had introduced Daniel to Vanessa at a charity gala.

The same man who had insisted that she was trustworthy.

Daniel stared at the old letter on the desk.

Then his phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from Marcus.

*Sir, I found an archived visitor log from the estate. Michael Sterling visited the house three days before Emily died. The entry says he met privately with Vanessa.*

Daniel looked at the date.

Three days before Emily's death.

May you like

And beneath the visitor log was a handwritten note from the security guard who had been on duty that night.

*Mr. Sterling left carrying a sealed envelope. Mrs. Carter followed him to the gate and told him, “No one can ever find out what we agreed.””*
