Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Daniel didn't call Michael back.

He saved the call log, sent a written account of the conversation to Richard, and asked the attorney to preserve every document connected to Sterling Holdings.

Then he returned to Maya's room.

She was laughing.

It was a small, tentative laugh, but Daniel stopped in the doorway as if he had stumbled upon something precious.

Claire was sitting beside the bed, making the stuffed bear perform a ridiculous dance. Eleanor was pretending to be offended because the bear had stolen her glasses.

For the first time since the vase shattered, Maya looked like a child who wasn't waiting for someone to shout.

When she saw Daniel, she held up the bear.

“Daddy, Aunt Claire says he's a terrible dancer.””

Daniel managed a smile.

“I'm sure he has other talents.””

“He can eat cookies,” Maya announced.

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“That's his only talent.””

Maya giggled.

Daniel felt the tightness in his chest loosen slightly.

He wanted to preserve this moment. He wanted to make sure his daughter never again had to wonder whether laughter was allowed in her own home.

But the investigation was moving quickly, and the questions were becoming more serious.

After Maya settled down with Eleanor, Daniel stepped into the corridor with Claire.

“Michael called me.””

Claire's expression darkened.

“What did he say?””

“He claimed Vanessa told him I was accusing her of abuse. Then I asked whether he'd visited the house before Emily died.””

“And?””

“He said Emily wasn't the only person who knew about the trust.””

Claire went pale.

“That sounds like a threat.””

“It may be. Richard has the details.””

Claire glanced toward Maya's room.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. Vanessa didn't just dislike Maya. She wanted to control the people around her.

Every time I tried to visit, Vanessa made it sound as though I was upsetting Maya's routine. She told me the little girl needed stability and that my presence was confusing her.””

“Why didn't you come anyway?””

“Because you told me not to.””

Daniel looked away.

Claire continued.

“I should have pushed harder. I should have found another way to reach Maya. But I believed you would eventually realize what was happening.””

“I didn't.””

“No,” she said quietly.

“You didn't.””

The honesty hurt, but Daniel accepted it.

“I won't make that mistake again.””

That afternoon, Richard arrived with a new development.

He carried a laptop and a folder of printed financial records.

“We've located a series of payments between an account linked to Vanessa and a consulting company associated with Sterling Holdings,” he explained.

“The payments began shortly after your wedding.””

Daniel frowned.

“How much?””

“Approximately eighty thousand dollars over eighteen months. The descriptions are vague—consulting, event planning, administrative support—but we haven't found evidence that the services were actually provided.””

“Could it be legitimate business?””

“Possibly. We need the underlying invoices and bank records before drawing conclusions.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What about the trust amendment?””

“The digital file was created on a computer registered to an administrative office used by Sterling Holdings. The signature image appears to have been copied from an older document.””

Daniel felt anger rise through him.

“So Michael forged my signature?””

“We don't know who did it. The computer's registration doesn't prove who was using it. But it's enough to warrant further investigation.””

Richard turned the laptop toward him.

“There's another file. It was recovered from an archived email folder associated with Vanessa's account.””

The screen showed a message sent to Michael.

Daniel trusts you more than anyone. If you confirm the arrangement, he won't question the paperwork.

Michael's reply was brief.

Not until the child is no longer an issue.

Daniel stared at the words.

“What does that mean?””

“I can't tell you. It could refer to the trust, guardianship, or something else. We need the complete context.””

Daniel pushed back his chair.

“I want this in the hands of the investigators today.””

“Already arranged.””

Before Richard left, he handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

“This was delivered to my office by a courier. It contains no return address.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Maya standing beside the dining table, taken on the morning the vase broke.

The image showed Brielle reaching toward the vase.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

But there was something Daniel hadn't seen in the security footage.

Vanessa was holding a phone, pointed toward the table.

The photograph had been taken from a different angle, perhaps by someone standing in the hallway.

On the back, a message had been written in black ink.

*She knew exactly what she was doing. Ask Brielle what her mother promised her.*

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Who sent this?””

“We're checking the courier information.””

“Could it be someone from the house?””

“Possibly.””

Daniel took the photograph to the hospital's safeguarding coordinator and explained how it had arrived. He did not question Brielle himself or approach her at the hospital. Laura had already made clear that any conversation with the child needed to be handled appropriately, without pressure or suggestions.

That evening, however, an unexpected visitor appeared at the hospital entrance.

Brielle stood beside a social worker, holding a pink backpack.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

Daniel approached cautiously.

“Brielle?””

She looked at him, then immediately lowered her head.

“Where's Maya?””

“She's resting.””

“Can I see her?””

Daniel glanced at the social worker, who explained that Brielle had been brought in after becoming distressed at home. Vanessa had left the residence, and arrangements were being made for Brielle's care while the situation was assessed.

Daniel crouched slightly to meet the girl's eyes.

“Brielle, I need you to understand that Maya is recovering. If you see her, you must be kind and give her space.””

Brielle nodded.

“I want to say I'm sorry.””

Daniel studied her face.

“Why?””

Her lower lip trembled.

“Because I broke the vase.””

Daniel kept his voice gentle.

“I know.””

Brielle's eyes widened.

“Mom said nobody would find out.””

“Why did she ask you to blame Maya?””

The girl began twisting the straps of her backpack.

“Because she said Maya was always getting everything.””

“What did she mean?””

“Daddy bought Maya a new coat, and Mom said it wasn't fair. She said Maya would always get the house and the money because she was your real daughter.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Did your mother tell you to break the vase?””

Brielle shook her head quickly.

“No. I broke it because I was angry. I didn't mean to. Then Mom told me to say Maya did it.””

“Did she promise you anything?””

Brielle looked toward the social worker.

The woman nodded gently, encouraging her to speak if she felt comfortable.

Brielle whispered, “She said if I helped her, she'd take me to Paris. She said Maya would be sent away, and then everything would be normal again.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And you believed her?””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted Mom to be happy with me.””

The words sounded painfully familiar.

Two children had been taught to fear losing love.

But one had been punished for telling the truth, while the other had been rewarded for lying.

Daniel sat back on his heels.

“Brielle, what happened wasn't your fault alone. You're a child, and adults are responsible for the choices they make. But blaming Maya was wrong, and you need to tell the truth now.””

Brielle nodded, sobbing.

“Will Maya hate me?””

“I can't promise how she'll feel. She's been hurt, and she may need time. But you can begin by being honest and not asking her to make you feel better.””

The social worker led Brielle away to speak privately with the appropriate professionals.

Daniel returned to Maya's room.

He found her awake, staring at the photograph of Emily.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Was Brielle here?””

Daniel sat beside her.

“She came to the hospital. She's upset about what happened.””

Maya's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Did she say she was sorry?””

“She did.””

Maya looked at the window.

“Do I have to forgive her?””

“No.””

She turned toward him, surprised.

“You don't?””

“Forgiveness is your choice. You don't owe anyone a quick answer, especially when you're still healing.””

Maya seemed to consider this carefully.

“Can I decide later?””

“Absolutely.””

She nodded, then rested her head against his arm.

A few minutes later, Daniel's phone vibrated.

Richard had sent a message.

*The anonymous photograph came from a hospital employee's relative who worked at the Carter estate. She's willing to speak to investigators. She says she witnessed Vanessa removing items from Emily's room before the vase incident.*

Daniel called Richard immediately.

“What items?””

“According to her preliminary statement, several envelopes and a small locked case. She says Vanessa claimed they belonged to her.””

“Did the witness see where they went?””

“Yes. She believes Vanessa took them to Michael Sterling's office.””

Daniel looked toward Maya.

The little girl was finally resting peacefully.

He stepped into the corridor before speaking.

“Find out what's in that case.””

Richard hesitated.

“Daniel, there's one more thing. The witness says she overheard Vanessa arguing with Michael on the phone the night before Emily died.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“What did she hear?””

“She remembers one sentence clearly.””

Richard paused.

“Vanessa said, ‘If Emily tells him what she found, both of us are finished.’”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The secret surrounding Emily's final days was no longer just a suspicion.

It was a trail.

And every new piece of evidence led back to the same two people.
