Chapter 11: The Witness Who Disappeared

Peter Vale agreed to meet investigators at a law office downtown.

Daniel was not permitted to attend the interview, and he respected that boundary. Instead, he waited in Richard's office with a cup of coffee that had gone cold.

At 10:26 a.m., Richard's phone rang.

He listened without speaking, then ended the call.

“Vale has confirmed several financial arrangements between Northbridge Advisory and Sterling Holdings,” he said.

“He also says Vanessa was aware of the proposed trust restructuring.””

“Did he admit that she and Michael planned it together?””

“He says they discussed it. Whether that establishes a criminal conspiracy is for the investigators to determine.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“What about Emily?””

Richard hesitated.

“Vale claims Emily discovered the arrangement and threatened to tell you.””

Daniel's fingers tightened around the coffee cup.

“What happened next?””

“Vale says Michael became concerned that Emily would expose the financial records. But he denies knowing anything about her death.””

“Do you believe him?””

“That's not the relevant question. We need evidence.””

Daniel nodded, though his stomach remained knotted.

“Can Vale identify the person who prepared the forged documents?””

“He says a former employee handled the paperwork. Her name is Natalie Brooks.””

“Where is she?””

“That's the problem. She left Sterling Holdings three years ago, and her current address hasn't been verified.””

Daniel stood.

“Find her.””

Richard held up a hand.

“The investigators are already working on it. You must not approach her yourself.””

“I won't.””

Daniel left the office and drove to the hospital's counseling center, where Maya had her first follow-up appointment.

He waited in reception while the therapist met with her privately. The appointment was part of the care plan, and Daniel had been advised not to pressure Maya to describe events outside those sessions.

When she emerged, she looked tired but calm.

“Can we go home now?”” she asked.

“Of course.””

In the car, Maya watched the city pass through the window.

After several minutes, she spoke.

“Daddy, do you think people can change?””

Daniel glanced at her.

“Yes. I think people can change when they're honest about what they've done and work to make things right.””

“Even Vanessa?””

He considered the question carefully.

“Maybe. But that doesn't mean you have to trust her, and it doesn't mean she gets to be near you before it's safe.””

Maya nodded.

“Good.””

At home, Claire was waiting with a stack of library books and a container of homemade soup.

She had begun visiting regularly, but she never arrived without checking whether Maya wanted company.

That afternoon, Maya chose to sit beside her at the kitchen island.

“Can we make cookies?”” Maya asked.

Claire smiled.

“Absolutely. But I should warn you that I'm terrible at measuring flour.””

Maya giggled.

“Then Daddy can do it.””

Daniel loosened his tie.

“Why am I being assigned the difficult job?””

“Because you're rich,” Maya replied matter-of-factly.

“You can buy more flour.””

Claire burst out laughing.

Daniel stared at his daughter, then laughed too.

For a few precious minutes, the house sounded like a home again.

But while Maya decorated cookies, Daniel received a call from Detective Grant.

“We've located Natalie Brooks,” she said.

“She has agreed to provide information, but she is frightened. She claims Michael Sterling contacted her last week.””

“Why?””

“She says he wanted to know whether she still had copies of the original trust documents.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Did she?””

“She claims she kept one backup file before leaving the company. We're arranging a secure transfer.””

“What did the file contain?””

“According to her preliminary statement, it included an earlier version of the amendment and correspondence showing who requested it.””

Daniel looked toward the kitchen.

Maya was laughing as Claire attempted to pipe frosting onto a cookie.

“Detective, can you ensure Natalie is protected from any pressure?””

“We're assessing the situation and taking appropriate precautions.””

Daniel thanked her and ended the call.

He wanted the truth. He also knew that every person involved had their own fears, loyalties, and motives. He couldn't force the answers by threatening people or using his influence.

He had to let the investigation proceed.

That evening, Natalie provided a statement through her attorney.

She confirmed that she had prepared a draft amendment at Michael's request. She said she had been told it was part of a legitimate estate-planning review, but she became suspicious when she was asked to use an image of Daniel's signature rather than obtain a fresh authorization.

She refused to finalize the document.

A week later, she left the company.

Her statement also mentioned Vanessa.

According to Natalie, Vanessa had attended a meeting where the amendment was discussed and asked whether Maya could be removed as a direct beneficiary.

Natalie said Michael answered that it would be difficult while Daniel remained alive and actively managed the trust.

Vanessa reportedly replied, “Then we need another route.””

The investigators were careful to note that Natalie's recollection required corroboration. But her account aligned with several recovered emails and the digital records.

Then she revealed something else.

She had kept a backup copy of a message from Michael, sent shortly after Emily's death.

The message read:

The situation has changed. Do not proceed until I confirm the next step. Daniel must not discover what Emily found.

Daniel read the transcript in Richard's office the following morning.

He felt as though the walls were closing in.

“What did Emily find?”” he asked.

Richard shook his head.

“We don't know yet.””

“Could the flash drive contain it?””

“Possibly. The digital forensic team is still examining the files.””

Daniel looked down at the transcript.

“Why would Michael contact Natalie three years later?””

“Because the records may still threaten him. Or because he wants to know what she retained. We cannot determine his motive from the message alone.””

Daniel leaned back.

For the first time, he felt anger giving way to something colder.

Michael had been part of his life for almost twenty years. He knew his business habits, his family history, and his deepest fears.

If Michael had been manipulating him, then Daniel had been fighting battles he didn't even know existed.

And Maya had been caught in the middle.

That afternoon, Claire brought Maya to the garden while Daniel took a call from Richard inside.

The garden was where Emily had once planted roses with Maya. Vanessa had later ordered most of them removed, claiming they attracted insects.

Claire had brought several small rose plants from a nursery.

Maya knelt beside the flower bed, carefully pressing soil around the roots.

“Will they grow?”” she asked.

“They should,” Claire replied.

“Flowers need time, sunlight, and care.””

Maya glanced at her.

“Like people?””

Claire smiled gently.

“Exactly like people.””

Maya touched one of the small leaves.

“Do you think Mommy can see them?””

Claire paused.

“I don't know what happens after we die, sweetheart. But I know your mother loved gardens, and I think she would have been happy to see you planting these.””

Maya nodded.

Then she whispered, “I miss her.””

Claire put an arm around her.

“It's okay to miss her.””

From the window, Daniel watched them.

He had nearly lost the chance to give Maya this kind of peace because he had been too busy protecting his company to notice what was happening inside his own home.

He promised himself that would never happen again.

His phone rang.

Detective Grant.

“We've made progress with the flash drive,” she said.

“It contains copies of several financial reports and a short video file. We're verifying the date and authenticity.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“What does the video show?””

“Your late wife speaking to someone in an office. The other person's face isn't visible in the portion we've recovered.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What is Emily saying?””

Detective Grant paused.

“She says, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure Daniel knows the trust wasn't the only thing they wanted.’”

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What did the other person say?””

“We haven't recovered the entire audio track. But there's a second voice.””

“Can you identify it?””

“Not yet.””

Daniel looked through the window at Maya and Claire.

“What happens next?””

“We'll have the video examined and continue interviewing the people involved. I need you to prepare for the possibility that the investigation may expand beyond financial misconduct.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Understood.””

After the call, he remained by the window.

The trust wasn't the only thing they wanted.

What else could Michael and Vanessa have been trying to obtain?

Control of the company? Access to private documents? Something connected to Emily's medical records?

Daniel didn't know.

Then Richard called again.

“We've identified the second voice in the recovered video,” he said.

“The forensic examiner is not prepared to make a formal identification yet, but the preliminary comparison is significant.””

Daniel's heart hammered.

“Whose voice is it?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Michael Sterling's.””

Daniel stared into the garden.

Michael had been in the office with Emily shortly before she died.

He had denied knowing what she discovered.

And now a recording appeared to place him in the conversation.

Before Daniel could respond, Richard added one final detail.

“The video was created two days before Emily died. The file metadata suggests someone attempted to erase it shortly afterward.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Two days.

The timeline was narrowing.

And somewhere inside the damaged recording was the conversation that might finally explain what Emily had been trying to protect her daughter from.
