Chapter 1: She’ll Be Fine

“Grandpa! Don’t leave me!””

Mia’s scream shattered the peaceful morning outside the luxury resort just as the family van began pulling away from the entrance. Her tiny pink sandals slapped against the sunlit pavement. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her curly hair bounced wildly as she ran after the vehicle with both arms stretched forward.

Inside, Vanessa adjusted the strap of her beige designer handbag and glanced through the window.

“She’ll be fine,” she said coldly.

Derrick Mitchell turned so fast his seat belt cut into his shoulder.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa didn’t answer. She reached for her sunglasses, as if the abandoned six-year-old running behind them were nothing more than an inconvenience.

Derrick saw Mia stumble.

The little girl caught herself on her hands, scrambled upright, and kept running.

“STOP THE VAN!”” Derrick roared.

The driver slammed on the brakes.

Luggage shifted in the rear compartment. A little boy gasped. Two adults twisted around in their seats, their faces frozen in disbelief.

Derrick threw open the passenger door and jumped out before the vehicle had fully stopped.

“Mia!””

“Grandpa!””

She ran straight into his arms.

Derrick dropped to one knee and caught her against his chest. Her little fingers clutched his dark polo shirt as though someone might pull him away from her again.

“I thought you left me,” she sobbed.

“I thought you didn't want me anymore.””

Derrick pressed his cheek against her curls.

“Never, baby. Never.””

He looked over her head toward the van.

Vanessa remained in her seat, her manicured fingers tapping impatiently against her handbag. When Derrick approached with Mia in his arms, Vanessa exhaled sharply.

“Can we please stop making a scene?”” she asked.

“We have a schedule.””

Derrick stared at her.

“You left my granddaughter standing outside a resort.””

“She was supposed to be with her aunt.””

“My sister is already inside that van.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Then someone should have been watching her.””

Derrick's jaw tightened. Mia buried her face against his neck when Vanessa spoke.

He carried the child back to the van and settled her beside him, keeping one arm firmly around her waist.

Across the aisle, Derrick's sister Rochelle covered her mouth.

“Vanessa,” Rochelle whispered, “how could you do that?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Don't start, Rochelle. Mia was dragging behind everyone. I told her to hurry.””

“She is six years old!”” Rochelle snapped.

“And six-year-olds need to learn that the world doesn't revolve around them.””

Derrick didn't respond.

He simply looked at Mia's scraped palms, the trembling in her knees, and the way she kept checking to make sure he was still beside her.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Who are you calling now?””

Derrick tapped one contact.

“Freeze everything. Now.””

He ended the call before the person on the other end could ask a question.

Vanessa's eyebrows drew together.

“What does that mean?””

Derrick slipped his phone away.

“You'll find out.””

Her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen and dismissed the notification.

Then it buzzed again.

And again.

Within seconds, the device vibrated so relentlessly that it rattled against the leather seat.

Vanessa snatched it up.

Her lips parted.

Across the screen, three notifications appeared in rapid succession.

*CARD DECLINED.*

*HOTEL ACCOUNT FROZEN.*

*SPENDING ACCESS SUSPENDED.*

“What the hell?”” she whispered.

She tried another card.

Declined.

She opened her banking app, tapped the balance, and refreshed the page.

Her face lost its composure.

“Derrick,” she said slowly, “what did you do?””

He adjusted Mia's pink dress where it had twisted beneath her seat belt.

“You left my grandchild behind.””

“That doesn't give you the right to interfere with my money!””

“Your money?””

Vanessa straightened.

“You know exactly what I mean.””

Derrick looked at her for a long moment before leaning forward and opening the glove compartment.

He moved a stack of resort brochures aside.

Then he found what he was looking for.

Vanessa's passport.

She lunged forward.

“Give me that.””

Derrick pulled it beyond her reach.

Something else slipped from behind the passport and landed across his palm: a folded travel confirmation printed on white paper.

He opened it.

His eyes stopped moving.

*ONE-WAY FLIGHT — TOMORROW.*

The van became so quiet that the air-conditioning sounded deafening.

Rochelle leaned across the aisle.

“What is that, Derrick?””

He didn't answer.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

“You were planning to leave us too?””

For the first time that morning, Vanessa had nothing to say.

Mia tightened her arms around Derrick's waist.

May you like

Vanessa stared at the paper, her mouth trembling as she watched him unfold one more corner.

Then she whispered, “You weren't supposed to find that.””
