Chapter 7: My Daughter Knew Something

Derrick didn't remember walking back to the van.

He remembered the photograph on his phone. He remembered Angela's signature. Most of all, he remembered his sister standing beside a luggage cart, looking at him as though she'd been waiting years for this moment and dreading it just as long.

“What did Angela know, Rochelle?””

His sister glanced toward the resort lobby, where Mia sat beside the receptionist, drawing little circles on a paper napkin with a complimentary pen.

“Not here,” Rochelle whispered.

Derrick's expression hardened.

“I'm done with secrets.””

“I'm not asking you to wait another day. I'm asking you to let me tell you without Mia hearing something that might frighten her.””

He looked through the glass doors at his granddaughter.

“Five minutes.””

They moved to a seating area near the palm-lined driveway. The sun shone directly through the windows, illuminating Rochelle's tear-streaked face.

She opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed Angela at twenty-seven, standing in front of a brick townhouse, one arm wrapped around Rochelle's shoulders. Angela wore a yellow sundress, and her smile was so bright that Derrick had to look away.

He remembered taking that photograph.

It had been a Sunday afternoon. Angela had insisted that everyone stay for dinner, even though Derrick had an early meeting the following morning.

She'd made too much food, laughed too loudly, and spent the evening teasing Rochelle about her terrible singing.

Two years later, she'd been gone.

Rochelle placed the photograph on the table.

“About six months before the accident, Angela called me late one night. She said she'd discovered something strange in the paperwork for a family trust.””

“What trust?””

“The one her grandfather established for the grandchildren. It was supposed to provide for their education and long-term security. Angela discovered that someone had been making inquiries about changing the beneficiary arrangements.””

Derrick frowned.

“Who?””

“She wouldn't tell me at first. She said she was checking the records before accusing anyone.””

“And you didn't think to tell me?””

“I didn't know the details. Angela made me promise not to involve you until she had evidence.””

Rochelle pressed her fingertips against the photograph.

“She said you were already carrying too much. You were working long hours, raising Mia, and trying to help her through her marriage. She didn't want you dragged into another fight.””

Derrick's voice dropped.

“What marriage?””

Rochelle hesitated.

“Angela knew Vanessa before you married her.””

The words landed between them.

Derrick stared at his sister.

“No. Vanessa and I met at a charity dinner two years after Angela died.””

“I know what you believe.””

“Then explain what you're saying.””

Rochelle drew a shaky breath.

“Angela met Vanessa at a fundraising event when Mia was still a toddler. They weren't friends, exactly, but they spoke several times. Vanessa was involved with an organization that helped families navigate guardianship and estate issues.””

Derrick shook his head.

“Vanessa worked in corporate hospitality when I met her.””

“She changed jobs.””

“That doesn't mean anything.””

“No,” Rochelle agreed.

“But Angela recognized her when you brought her home. She asked me to find out why Vanessa had been asking questions about the trust.””

Derrick felt the room tilt around him.

“Why didn't Angela ask me herself?””

“She planned to. She told me she wanted to speak with you after she'd verified the records.””

“Then she died.””

Rochelle nodded.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Outside, a resort employee wheeled a luggage cart past the window. A family posed for photographs beside the entrance, smiling beneath the bright afternoon sun.

The ordinary world seemed impossibly distant.

Derrick leaned forward.

“Did Angela think Vanessa caused the accident?””

“No.”” Rochelle answered firmly.

“She never said that, and I have no evidence of anything like that. I won't pretend I know more than I do.””

He exhaled slowly.

“Good.””

“But she was worried that someone wanted access to the trust. And she was worried about what might happen to Mia if the wrong person became responsible for her affairs.””

Derrick looked at Angela's photograph again.

“What did she ask you to promise?””

Rochelle's eyes filled.

“She asked me to promise that if anything ever happened to her, I would make sure Mia stayed with someone who loved her more than they loved what she could inherit.””

Derrick went completely still.

Rochelle continued.

“She said, 'Rochelle, if people start fighting over money, don't let them turn my baby into a prize.''”

Derrick lowered his head.

He could almost hear Angela saying it herself.

He could picture her sitting at his kitchen counter, her hands wrapped around a mug, pretending she wasn't frightened because she didn't want anyone else to worry.

“Did she leave a will?”” he asked.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

“Her attorney handled the original. But the letter in that photograph was separate. Angela said she'd placed it somewhere safe.””

Derrick took out his phone.

“Who sent me the photograph?””

“I don't know.””

“Then how did they get it?””

Rochelle shook her head.

“Denise might know.””

“Where is Denise?””

Before Rochelle could answer, a resort employee approached the seating area.

“Mr. Mitchell? There's a woman at the front desk asking for you. She says it's urgent.””

Derrick stood.

“What's her name?””

“Denise Carter.””

Rochelle grabbed his arm.

“Derrick, wait.””

He looked down at her hand.

“What now?””

“If Denise has the letter, you need to understand something before she gives it to you.””

“I'm listening.””

Rochelle swallowed.

“Angela told me that if the trust was ever challenged, the original trustee would have to verify the letter personally. She said the trustee knew a detail nobody else could know.””

“What detail?””

Rochelle's face crumpled.

“She wouldn't tell me.””

Derrick gently removed his sister's hand from his arm.

“Then we'll ask Denise.””

He walked into the lobby.

A Black woman in her early forties stood near the reception desk, holding a brown leather folder against her chest. Her expression was weary, but when she saw Derrick, she straightened.

“Derrick Mitchell?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Denise Carter. I knew your daughter.””

“I know who you are.””

Denise glanced toward the glass doors, where Mia was now standing beside Rochelle.

“Is that Mia?””

“Yes.””

“She's beautiful. Angela would be so proud of her.””

Derrick's throat tightened.

“Did you send me that photograph?””

Denise nodded.

“I did.””

“Where is the original letter?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Why not bring it here?””

“Because I wanted to make sure Vanessa couldn't get her hands on it.””

Derrick studied her.

“Why is Vanessa involved in my daughter's affairs?””

Denise opened the leather folder.

“Because she contacted me six weeks ago and told me she already knew about Angela's letter. She said the trust was about to become a problem for your family.””

“Did she threaten you?””

“No. She offered me money to hand over the original documents.””

Derrick stared at her.

“How much?””

Denise named a figure that made him recoil.

“And you refused?””

“I did.””

“Why?””

Denise looked at Mia through the glass.

“Because Angela made me promise that if anyone ever tried to use her daughter's inheritance to control the child, I would get the truth to you.””

She removed a sealed envelope from the folder.

Across the front, in Angela's handwriting, were six words.

*For Dad. Only if I cannot explain.*

Derrick's eyes blurred.

He reached for the envelope.

Denise held it for one final moment.

“Before you open this,” she said, “you need to know that Vanessa isn't the only person who has been searching for it.””

“Who else?””

Denise looked toward the driveway.

A black sedan had just pulled up beside the family van.

The rear passenger door opened.

And Derrick saw a man he hadn't spoken to in nearly four years.

Angela's former husband.

May you like

Mia's biological father.

Marcus Bell.
