Chapter 10: The One Person Angela Trusted

Derrick didn't take Veronica's hand.

He stared at the document she held, studying the signature that supposedly belonged to him. The letters were familiar. The slant was right. Even the little hook at the end of his surname looked like his own handwriting.

But he hadn't signed it.

“Put that document on the desk,” Derrick said.

Veronica's smile disappeared.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me. Put it down.””

She glanced toward the receptionist, who had stopped typing. Two resort security officers stood near the entrance, watching the exchange without approaching.

Veronica placed the document on the counter.

“There. Happy?””

“No. Who prepared it?””

“My attorney.””

“What's the attorney's name?””

“You can contact him after the transfer is complete.””

Derrick gave a short, incredulous laugh.

“You want me to sign away my granddaughter's care to a woman I've never met, using a document carrying a signature I never wrote, and you won't even identify the attorney?””

“I'm not asking you to sign anything. The document has already been signed.””

“By me?””

“That's what it says.””

Derrick leaned forward.

“Then you won't mind waiting while my attorney verifies it.””

Veronica's eyes narrowed.

“Your attorney is already involved?””

“Yes.””

For the first time, her confidence faltered.

She quickly recovered, gathering the papers against her chest.

“This is becoming unnecessarily hostile. Vanessa told me you'd react this way.””

Derrick went still.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“Outside.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because someone needs to make sure Mia's future is protected.””

“From whom?””

Veronica looked directly into his eyes.

“From you, apparently.””

Derrick felt anger rise, but he kept his voice level.

“Security, please ask Ms. Mitchell to remain here while we verify these documents.””

Veronica immediately stepped back.

“You cannot detain me.””

“No one's detaining you. You're free to leave. But if you leave with these papers, my attorney will need to know that you refused to provide them for verification.””

She hesitated.

The receptionist quietly picked up the desk phone.

Veronica looked at the officers, then at Derrick.

“Fine. Call your attorney.””

Derrick dialed Patricia.

She answered almost immediately.

“Derrick?””

“I'm downstairs with a woman claiming to be Vanessa's sister. She's carrying a transfer-of-care document with a forged signature bearing my name.””

“Don't sign anything. Don't surrender any original documents. Can you photograph the papers and send them to me?””

“Already doing that.””

He took several clear photographs, including the document's heading, signature block, and the attached authorization page.

Patricia examined them while Derrick waited.

Then her voice changed.

“Derrick, listen carefully. This document references a case number that doesn't match the petition I reviewed. It also cites an authorization that appears to come from Angela's estate.””

“Can someone transfer Mia's care using that?””

“Not on the basis of this document alone. We need to verify the underlying records and contact the appropriate authorities. I'm coming to the resort.””

Derrick ended the call.

Veronica folded her arms.

“You're making this much more complicated than it needs to be.””

“No. Someone forged my signature and tried to arrange a transfer of my granddaughter. That's complicated enough.””

Her expression hardened.

“You have no idea what Vanessa has been through.””

“Then she should have told me the truth.””

“She tried.””

Derrick stared at her.

“When?””

Veronica opened her mouth, then closed it.

He shook his head.

“That's what I thought.””

He returned to the conference room with the photographs and found Rochelle sitting beside Mia. Marcus stood near the window, and Denise was carefully arranging Angela's original letter and the other papers into separate folders.

Mia jumped up when Derrick entered.

“Grandpa, is everything okay?””

He knelt and opened his arms.

“I'm handling it, sweetheart.””

She hugged him tightly.

“Can we go home now?””

“Yes. We're going home together.””

For the first time that day, Mia smiled.

It was small and uncertain, but it was real.

Derrick held her for another moment before standing.

“Rochelle, stay with Mia. Marcus, please wait here. Denise, I need you to tell Patricia everything you know about the original letter.””

Marcus nodded.

“Derrick, before you go, there's something I need to say.””

Derrick turned.

Marcus's eyes were wet.

“I know I can't make up for the years I missed. I know showing up today doesn't make me a father again. But I won't help anyone take Mia away from you.””

Derrick studied him.

“Then start by telling the truth. All of it. No more convenient omissions.””

Marcus nodded.

“I will.””

Derrick returned to the lobby.

Veronica was still at the counter, speaking quietly into her phone.

When she saw him, she ended the call.

“Vanessa wants to speak with you.””

“Then bring her inside.””

Veronica looked toward the glass doors.

A moment later, Vanessa entered the lobby.

Her beige outfit was rumpled now. Her carefully arranged hair had begun to loosen, and her eyes were red.

She stopped when she saw Veronica.

“What did you tell him?””

Veronica looked away.

“Nothing he couldn't figure out himself.””

Vanessa's expression turned furious.

“You had one job.””

Derrick stepped between them.

“Enough. Both of you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

For a moment, she seemed ready to argue. Then she noticed the photographs on his phone.

“You found the document.””

“I found several documents. Some with my signature. Some with Angela's name. And all of them raise questions you haven't answered.””

Vanessa's shoulders sagged.

“Derrick, please.””

“No more pleading. Tell me why you wanted Mia gone tomorrow.””

Vanessa looked through the glass doors toward the conference room.

Mia was visible inside, sitting beside Rochelle with a coloring book in her lap.

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

“I didn't want her hurt.””

“Then why did you leave her behind?””

“I panicked.””

“You told her she was too slow. You watched her run after the van.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“Why?””

She lowered her hand.

“Because I knew the plan was falling apart. I knew you'd discover the travel documents, and I didn't know how to stop it.””

“What plan?””

Vanessa looked at Veronica.

Her sister shook her head sharply.

“Don't,” Veronica whispered.

Vanessa turned back to Derrick.

“The plan was supposed to be temporary. Mia would stay with Veronica while I left the country. I thought you would agree after everything was explained.””

“Explained by whom?””

“Me.””

“You didn't explain anything. You prepared false paperwork.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I was desperate.””

Derrick's voice remained steady.

“Desperate for what?””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Then she finally told him.

“Money.””

The word was barely audible.

Derrick didn't move.

Vanessa continued, her voice shaking.

“I found out about Angela's trust months ago. I thought the money was available to help the family, but Patricia told me I had no authority over it. I became frightened. I had debts I hadn't told you about, and people were demanding payment.””

“How much?””

She told him.

Derrick closed his eyes briefly.

It was a substantial amount, but not enough to explain the elaborate deception by itself.

“Why involve Mia?””

“Because Veronica told me the trust could be reviewed if there were questions about her care. She said that if Mia's living arrangements changed, the trustee might have to reconsider the restrictions.””

Veronica stepped forward.

“That is not what I said.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You told me the documents would make everything easier!””

“I told you to get legal advice.””

“You told me you knew someone who could arrange the transfer!””

“And you decided to forge a signature!””

Their voices rose until the receptionist asked them to lower them.

Derrick looked at Veronica.

“Did you create that document?””

“No.””

“Did you know it was false?””

Veronica hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to tell him she wasn't going to answer honestly without independent scrutiny.

Derrick stepped away and called Patricia again.

“I'm ready for you to speak with both of them. They have admitted there was a plan to transfer Mia's care, and Vanessa says the trust was part of the motive.””

Patricia's reply was immediate.

“Do not question them further. Preserve the documents, and let the appropriate authorities investigate any suspected forgery or attempted fraud. I'm almost there.””

Derrick ended the call.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You're not taking Mia anywhere.””

She nodded through her tears.

“I understand.””

“No. I don't think you do. You don't get to make decisions about her future while hiding the truth from the people responsible for her.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Will you ever forgive me?””

Derrick glanced toward the conference room.

“I don't know.””

She looked as though she'd expected a different answer.

He continued.

“Forgiveness isn't a signature you can demand. It isn't a ticket you can book. And it isn't something you get because you're frightened of the consequences.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

For once, she didn't argue.

A few minutes later, Patricia arrived with another attorney and began reviewing the documents. The resort's security staff preserved the relevant records, and the disputed paperwork was set aside for examination. Patricia confirmed that the trust remained under independent administration and that no valid transfer of Mia's care had been established.

The flight confirmation, the alleged consent form, and the petition were all retained for further review.

Nobody left the resort with Mia except Derrick and Rochelle.

Before they departed, Derrick returned to the conference room and sat beside his granddaughter.

She held up her drawing.

It showed three people beneath a yellow sun: a tall man, a little girl in a pink dress, and a woman with curly hair.

“That's Mommy,” Mia explained, pointing at the third figure.

“I made her stand next to us so she wouldn't be lonely.””

Derrick felt tears gather in his eyes.

“That's beautiful, baby.””

“Can we put it in our house?””

“Right above your bed, if you want.””

Mia leaned against him.

“Grandpa?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Did Mommy know I would be okay?””

Derrick looked at Angela's letter resting inside the folder.

He thought of her warning, her careful planning, and the promise she'd asked Rochelle to make.

He kissed Mia's forehead.

“I think your mommy did everything she could to make sure you would be loved.””

Mia considered that.

Then she slipped her small hand into his.

“Then let's go home.””

And Derrick finally did.

Three months later, the truth had begun to settle into something the family could live with.

The investigation into the forged documents and disputed arrangements continued through the proper legal channels. Patricia remained the independent trustee of Mia's inheritance, and no one could redirect the funds without the required authorization.

Vanessa moved out of Derrick's home while the marriage was being addressed through legal counsel. She was required to answer questions about the paperwork, her financial obligations, and the arrangements she'd made with Veronica.

Derrick didn't pretend that the damage could be erased.

But he no longer let unanswered questions dictate every moment of his life.

Marcus began rebuilding his relationship with Mia slowly, through agreed visits and consistent actions rather than grand promises. He showed up when he said he would. He learned which bedtime story Mia wanted to hear and which breakfast she refused to eat.

Rochelle stopped trying to protect Derrick by keeping secrets.

And every Sunday, the family gathered at Derrick's house for dinner.

One bright Sunday afternoon, Mia sat at the kitchen table, coloring while Derrick prepared a batch of Angela's favorite cookies.

“Grandpa?””

He looked over his shoulder.

“What's up, baby?””

“Can I ask you something about Mommy?””

“Anything.””

“Did she really write that letter for you?””

Derrick washed his hands, dried them on a towel, and sat beside her.

“Yes, she did.””

“Was she scared?””

He thought carefully before answering.

“I think she was worried about the future. But she also wanted us to know how much she loved you.””

Mia looked at her drawing.

“Then I want to write a letter too.””

Derrick smiled.

“Who is it for?””

“You.””

He found a sheet of paper and placed it in front of her.

Mia gripped her crayon with both hands and slowly wrote the letters she knew.

When she finished, she pushed the paper toward him.

Derrick read the message.

*DEAR GRANDPA, THANK YOU FOR STOPPING THE VAN.*

Beneath it was a drawing of a little girl running toward a man with open arms.

Derrick pressed the paper against his chest.

Mia tilted her head.

“Are you crying?””

He laughed softly through his tears.

“A little.””

“Why?””

“Because sometimes the smallest people remind us what matters most.””

She climbed into his lap.

“Then don't forget.””

He wrapped his arms around her.

“I won't.””

That evening, Derrick placed Mia's letter beside Angela's original letter in a wooden keepsake box. He didn't lock it away in a safe or hide it behind financial documents.

He kept it where he could see it.

Because the most important thing Angela had left him wasn't a trust, a legal instruction, or a warning about the future.

It was the little girl who still reached for his hand whenever she felt afraid.

And Derrick understood, at last, that protecting her didn't mean controlling every outcome.

It meant making sure she never had to wonder whether someone would come back for her.

Outside, the sun settled over the palm trees beyond his backyard fence.

Mia fell asleep against his shoulder, her drawing resting on her lap.

Derrick kissed her curls and whispered the promise he'd made on the day the van pulled away.

May you like

“Never, baby. Never.””

And this time, there were no secrets left between them that mattered more than that promise.
