Chapter 5: The Woman With the Envelope
Derrick moved between the stranger and the van before she had taken three steps.
“Who are you?””
The woman stopped beside the SUV. She was a Black American woman in her early forties, with her hair pulled into a neat bun and a leather document case tucked under one arm.
“My name is Camille Brooks,” she said.
“I believe your wife has been expecting me.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“Camille, I told you not to come here.””
Camille looked at her.
“And I told you we couldn't keep postponing this.””
Derrick glanced at the envelope.
“What is this about?””
Camille studied him carefully.
“Are you Derrick Mitchell?””
“Yes.””
“Then I need to speak with you privately.””
“No.””
Camille blinked.
“No?””
“You don't arrive at a resort, ask to discuss my granddaughter, and expect me to hand you a private conversation. Whatever you have to say, you can say it here.””
Vanessa stepped toward Camille.
“Please. Not in front of everyone.””
Camille's expression hardened.
“You should have thought about that before you made promises you couldn't keep.””
Rochelle climbed out of the van, keeping Mia close beside her.
“Who exactly are you?”” Rochelle demanded.
Camille opened her document case.
“I work with a family-services organization. Vanessa contacted me several weeks ago about a possible arrangement involving a child.””
Derrick's stomach tightened.
“What kind of arrangement?””
Camille looked at Vanessa.
“You said you would explain it to him.””
Vanessa shook her head rapidly.
“That's not how we discussed this.””
Camille let out a humorless laugh.
“You told me the child's grandfather had agreed.””
“He would have agreed if you'd given me time!””
“You've had weeks.””
Derrick felt Mia's hand slip into his.
He looked down.
The little girl was watching Camille with wide, frightened eyes.
“Rochelle,” he said quietly, “take Mia inside the resort lobby. Stay where I can see you.””
Mia immediately shook her head.
“No, Grandpa. Don't leave me.””
Derrick crouched.
“I'm not leaving you, baby. I'll be right outside the doors. You can see me through the glass.””
She studied his face.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
Rochelle led her toward the entrance, stopping just inside the glass doors. Derrick remained visible through the windows, exactly as he'd promised.
Only then did he turn back to Camille.
“Explain the arrangement.””
Camille removed a document from the envelope.
“Vanessa contacted us about a temporary family placement. She described a situation in which Mia might benefit from spending time with another household while the adults resolved some personal difficulties.””
Derrick stared at her.
“Another household?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
Camille lowered the paper slightly.
“Vanessa represented that you were aware of the proposal.””
“I wasn't.””
Camille's expression changed.
“You weren't?””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I never said you had signed anything!””
Camille turned on her.
“You told me you had his agreement. You said he was difficult to reach because of work, but that he understood the plan.””
“I said he would understand eventually.””
“That is not what you said.””
Derrick took the document from Camille and scanned the first page.
The language was formal, full of phrases about temporary care, family assessment, and voluntary participation. Several sections had been highlighted.
At the bottom was a signature line.
His name appeared there.
Derrick's fingers went cold.
He looked at the signature.
It resembled his handwriting.
But he had never signed the document.
“What is this?”” he asked.
Camille leaned closer.
“The preliminary consent form.””
“I did not sign this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Derrick, please listen.””
He held up the page.
“Is this my signature?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa, is this my signature?””
“I handled the paperwork.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Camille pulled another sheet from her case.
“This is why I came here. The final authorization was supposed to be completed before tomorrow's scheduled departure. When Vanessa stopped responding to my messages, I became concerned.””
“Scheduled departure for whom?”” Derrick asked.
Camille hesitated.
“For Mia.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
Derrick stared at her.
“You were planning to take my granddaughter somewhere tomorrow?””
“It was supposed to be a temporary placement,” Camille replied.
“I was told the family had agreed to it.””
“She is not being placed anywhere.””
“I understand that now.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“You don't understand anything! You came here promising that you could help me, and now you're standing there acting like I forced you to do something!””
Camille turned toward her.
“You told me Mia's grandfather was abusive.””
Derrick went still.
“What?””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
Camille continued, her voice suddenly more cautious.
“You said there were escalating conflicts at home and that the child was becoming emotionally distressed. You said the family needed a safe, temporary separation.””
Rochelle, standing behind the glass doors, pressed one hand over her mouth.
Derrick looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell this woman I was abusing Mia?””
“No!””
Vanessa's answer came too quickly.
“I said there were problems. I said you were overprotective. I never said you were abusing her.””
Camille looked down at the documents.
“Your written statement says otherwise.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“I was trying to get someone to listen to me!””
Derrick stepped closer.
“Listen to you about what?””
Vanessa's eyes shone with angry tears.
“About the fact that I couldn't keep living like this!””
“You could have left me,” Derrick said.
“You could have asked for a divorce. You could have packed your bags and walked out that door. But you involved my granddaughter in something she couldn't understand.””
“I wasn't trying to hurt her!””
“Then why did you tell her she might see her dead mother?””
Vanessa recoiled.
Camille looked between them.
“You told Mia that?””
Vanessa pressed her hands against her forehead.
“I was trying to make her cooperate!””
Nobody spoke.
Even the traffic passing the resort entrance seemed distant.
Derrick looked at the papers again.
The forged signature. The allegations. The planned departure.
This wasn't simply a secret vacation or an impulsive decision to leave a marriage.
Someone had been building a story about his family without his knowledge.
And Vanessa had been using Mia to make that story believable.
Derrick handed the documents back to Camille.
“Please preserve everything you have, including every message and every version of these forms. My attorney will contact you.””
Camille nodded.
“I will. I also need to be clear that I won't proceed with any placement without proper authorization and verification.””
“Good.””
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Derrick, please. We can fix this privately.””
He looked at her.
“Privately? You made accusations about me to an organization that could take my granddaughter away. You planned to leave tomorrow. And now you're asking me to keep this private?””
“I was desperate!””
“For what?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward Camille.
Camille tightened her grip on the document case.
“There's something else you should know,” she said.
Derrick turned.
“What?””
Camille removed a small printed sheet from the envelope.
“Vanessa didn't approach us alone. The initial inquiry came from another person, someone who said they were acting on behalf of Mia's maternal family.””
Derrick's heart began pounding.
“Who?””
Camille looked at the name printed near the top of the page.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“Angela's family.””
Derrick stared at her.
“Angela had no family involved in Mia's care except me.””
Camille swallowed.
“That's what I thought, too. Until I received a copy of the letter authorizing the inquiry.””
She held out the page.
Derrick took it.
At the bottom, beneath the typed name of the person who had initiated the request, was a handwritten note.
*Please don't tell Derrick until the child is safe.*
Derrick read the sentence twice.

Then he recognized the handwriting.
His sister Rochelle had written those words.
