Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back

Derrick had imagined many things when he'd thought about the day Marcus Bell might return.

An apology.

A phone call.

Perhaps a letter explaining why he'd disappeared from Mia's life after Angela's death.

He had never imagined seeing him step out of a black sedan at a luxury resort, wearing an expensive navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

Marcus looked older than Derrick remembered. His face was leaner, his hair closely trimmed, and a faint scar ran along his chin.

He spotted Derrick immediately.

“Mr. Mitchell.””

Derrick didn't move.

“You have some nerve showing up here.””

Marcus stopped several feet away.

“I know how this looks.””

“You have no idea how this looks.””

“I came because I was told Mia might be in danger.””

Derrick let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Now you care?””

Marcus flinched.

Denise stepped between them.

“Both of you need to calm down. This isn't helping Mia.””

Derrick turned toward her.

“Did you contact him?””

“No. He contacted me yesterday.””

Marcus opened his briefcase and removed a folded document.

“I received an email telling me that someone was attempting to change the arrangements for Angela's trust. The message said Mia might be taken out of the country tomorrow.””

Derrick stared at him.

“Who sent it?””

“I don't know. The email came from an address I couldn't trace.””

“You expect me to believe you suddenly care about your daughter because of an anonymous email?””

Marcus's face tightened.

“She is my daughter.””

“Then where have you been for three years?””

Marcus looked down.

The silence that followed was more revealing than any excuse.

Finally, he said, “I was ashamed.””

Derrick's anger sharpened.

“Of what?””

“Of leaving. Of not knowing how to raise a child after Angela died. Of the things I did before the accident.””

He looked toward Mia.

She stood inside the lobby, holding Rochelle's hand, watching the adults through the glass.

Marcus's expression broke.

“I told myself she'd be better off with you. You had always been the one who knew how to make her feel safe.””

“You didn't even call on her birthday last year.””

“I know.””

“You didn't send a Christmas card.””

“I know.””

“You didn't ask whether she was sick, whether she was sleeping, whether she still cried for her mother.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Derrick stepped closer.

“Then don't come here and act like you're a hero.””

“I'm not asking you to forgive me.””

“Good.””

“I'm asking you to hear what I know.””

Derrick glanced at Denise, who held Angela's sealed envelope.

“Talk.””

Marcus placed the document on a nearby table.

“Before Angela died, she contacted me about the trust. She said someone was trying to gain control over the funds set aside for Mia. She asked me to sign a document confirming that I had no intention of interfering with her care or inheritance.””

“Did you sign it?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Marcus tapped the briefcase.

“Here. Along with the emails we exchanged.””

Derrick examined the document without picking it up.

“And you waited three years to tell me?””

“I thought the matter had been settled. After Angela died, I was overwhelmed. I convinced myself that if I stayed away, I couldn't make things worse.””

“You made things worse by disappearing.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

Denise placed the envelope beside the document.

“Angela's letter might explain why she was so worried.””

Derrick looked at the handwriting again.

His fingers trembled as he broke the seal.

Inside were three pages of handwritten notes and a smaller folded sheet containing legal references. The first line was addressed to him.

Dad, if you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.

He stopped.

For several seconds, he could not continue.

Denise stood quietly beside him. Marcus looked away, giving him what little privacy the public lobby could offer.

Derrick read on.

Angela wrote about her concerns regarding the family trust. She described discovering inquiries made by someone she did not recognize and a request to review the arrangements for Mia's future care.

She did not accuse anyone of a crime.

Instead, she explained that she had become uncomfortable with the number of people asking questions about her daughter's inheritance.

I know you will want to protect Mia from everything, Dad. But the greatest danger may not be someone who wants to hurt her. It may be someone who convinces everyone that they are helping her.

Derrick read the sentence twice.

The words seemed to describe the morning he'd just endured.

He turned to the second page.

Angela explained that she'd appointed an independent trustee to oversee Mia's financial interests until she reached adulthood. No guardian, parent, or spouse could unilaterally redirect the money.

At the bottom, she'd written the trustee's name.

Derrick froze.

“That's impossible.””

Denise leaned closer.

“What is it?””

He showed her the page.

Her eyes widened.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who is it?””

Derrick swallowed.

“The trustee is Patricia Ellis.””

His own attorney.

The woman he'd called that morning.

Denise nodded slowly.

“Angela told me she had chosen someone she trusted completely.””

Derrick continued reading.

The final page contained a warning.

If anyone presents documents claiming that I wanted Mia removed from the family, please verify them with Patricia. I would never arrange for my daughter to be taken away from the people who love her without speaking to them first.

Below the sentence was a handwritten date.

Three days before Angela's accident.

Derrick looked up.

“Why would Vanessa need a false consent form if the trust couldn't be changed without Patricia's approval?””

Denise answered carefully.

“Perhaps she didn't understand the trust. Or perhaps she wanted something beyond the money.””

Marcus pulled another paper from his briefcase.

“There's one more thing.””

Derrick's eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Marcus laid the paper beside Angela's letter.

It was a copy of an email sent to him two weeks earlier.

The sender's name was Vanessa Mitchell.

The message contained only a few lines.

You need to come back before the arrangements are finalized. If you want a place in Mia's life, tomorrow may be your last opportunity.

Derrick stared at the screen printout.

Vanessa had contacted Marcus.

She had brought Camille into the situation.

She had prepared paperwork using Derrick's name.

And she had arranged a flight with another passenger.

“What arrangements?”” he asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Derrick looked at Denise.

“Do you?””

She hesitated before answering.

“I know Vanessa had been asking about a document Angela left with Patricia. It wasn't part of the trust itself. It was a private letter containing instructions about Mia's care if the family ever became divided.””

Derrick's stomach tightened.

“What instructions?””

Denise lowered her voice.

“Angela named a person she wanted Mia to live with if you were ever unable to care for her.””

Derrick looked toward his granddaughter.

“I can care for Mia.””

“I know,” Denise said.

“That's why I never handed the letter to Vanessa.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who did Angela name?””

Denise opened her folder and removed a photocopy of the document's final page.

She turned it around.

Derrick read the name.

Then he looked up at Rochelle, who had just entered the lobby with Mia.

His sister stopped when she saw the paper in his hand.

“Oh, Angela,” Rochelle whispered.

Derrick's voice was barely audible.

“She named you.””

Rochelle's eyes filled.

“She told me she'd never need to use it.””

Derrick felt the room grow smaller.

The woman who had promised to protect Mia had known something he didn't.

And now, with Vanessa's flight scheduled for the following morning, Derrick had less than a day to discover why Angela had prepared for a future in which he might lose his granddaughter.

His phone rang.

Patricia's name appeared on the screen.

He answered immediately.

“Patricia, I have Angela's letter.””

“I know,” she replied.

“Denise contacted me.””

Derrick gripped the phone.

“Then tell me what Vanessa is trying to do.””

Patricia fell silent.

When she finally spoke, her voice had changed.

“Derrick, I need you to listen carefully. Vanessa filed an emergency petition yesterday.””

“Petition for what?””

“To have Mia's care reviewed before tomorrow's departure.””

Derrick stared at the glass doors.

“On what grounds?””

Patricia took a breath.

“She claims you're preparing to remove Mia from the country without her consent.””

Derrick couldn't speak.

May you like

Patricia continued.

“And Derrick, someone has attached a document to that petition that appears to be a letter from Angela.””
