Chapter 1: The Belly Moved
“Daddy… her belly moved!””
Lily’s voice cut through the church like a dropped glass.
For one strange second, nobody moved.
Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of New Hope Baptist Church, scattering blue and gold across the polished wooden pews. White roses lined the aisle. The organist had just finished the wedding march, and dozens of formally dressed guests were still smiling at the bride.
Then six-year-old Lily pressed her tiny palm against Vanessa’s rounded stomach.
The bump shifted.
Not subtly.
It slid sideways beneath the white lace of Vanessa’s wedding gown.
Lily’s eyes widened.
She jerked her hand back and pointed.
“Daddy… her belly moved!””
Marcus stopped breathing.
His daughter stood beside the bride in her little white flower-girl dress, braided hair decorated with tiny white ribbons. She looked confused rather than frightened.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then her expression hardened.
“Stop ruining my wedding!”” Vanessa snapped.
She slapped Lily’s pointing hand away.
The sound echoed.
Lily recoiled.
Her lower lip trembled.
Marcus moved instantly.
“Vanessa!””
He stepped between them, pulling Lily behind his tuxedo jacket.
“Don’t ever put your hands on my daughter again.””
“I barely touched her,” Vanessa said.
“You slapped her.””
“She was poking me!””
“She’s six.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus slowly turned around.
His eyes settled on her stomach.
The church became unnaturally quiet.
Vanessa’s breathing was fast now.
Marcus took one step closer.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “look at me.””
She didn’t.
Her fingers were gripping the sides of her gown.
Lily peeked around Marcus’s arm.
“Daddy…”
Marcus held up one hand.
“Stay behind me, sweetheart.””
“But—”
“Please.””
Vanessa backed away.
The lace around her waist had loosened during the struggle. A small beige corner appeared beneath the gown.
Lily stared at it.
Then she reached forward.
Vanessa gasped.
“Don’t!””
Lily pulled.
A beige foam pregnancy pad slid from beneath the dress.
Several guests gasped at once.
The pad fell halfway to the floor, caught against the layers of white fabric.
Marcus stared at it.
Then at Vanessa.
“What is that?””
Vanessa lunged for it.
Marcus caught her wrist.
“Don’t.””
“Let go of me.””
“What is it?””
“It’s nothing!””
“You’re wearing a fake belly?””
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“Marcus, please.””
He released her.
She grabbed the pad and tried desperately to shove it back beneath the gown.
Lily whispered from behind him.
“She made me promise not to tell.””
Marcus turned.
“What did she make you promise?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Lily,” she whispered.
The little girl shook her head.
“You said Daddy would be mad.””
Marcus crouched.
“Come here.””
Lily slowly stepped around him.
Marcus took both her hands.
“Tell me what happened.””
Vanessa stared at them.
“Marcus, this is not the place.””
His voice dropped.
“You’re right.””
He looked toward the guests.
“But you made it this place.””
Lily swallowed.
Then she pointed toward the rear church doors.
“That man calls her his wife.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Marcus slowly stood.
“What man?””
Lily pointed again.
“The man who comes when you go to work.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“Lily…”
The rear doors were closed.
Behind them, sunlight glowed through the glass.
Then came a voice.
“Vanessa?””
Every head turned.
Vanessa’s face instantly drained of color.
Marcus looked at her.
“You know that voice?””
She couldn’t answer.
The handle on the rear door moved.
A guest whispered, “Oh my God.””
The door opened an inch.
Bright daylight flooded through the crack.
Marcus instinctively moved Lily behind him.
Vanessa took one trembling step backward.
The doors began opening wider.
A man’s silhouette appeared against the blinding light.
“Vanessa?””
May you like
She covered her mouth.
And for the first time that morning, Marcus saw genuine terror in his bride’s eyes.
