Chapter 6: The Father Nobody Knew

Marcus ran back into the sanctuary.

Guests were standing between the pews.

The pastor had moved Lily behind him.

Vanessa stood motionless near the altar.

And at the front doors stood an older Black man in a black overcoat.

Marcus stopped.

The stranger's eyes were fixed on Caleb.

Caleb whispered:

“Raymond.””

Andre stumbled backward.

“No.””

The older man stepped inside.

“I've been waiting six years to see my son.””

Caleb's face twisted.

“You're dead.””

Raymond smiled sadly.

“That's what she told you.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She was very convincing.””

Vanessa backed away.

“Raymond, please.””

“You took my children.””

“I protected them.””

“You stole them.””

Raymond's voice never rose.

That made it worse.

Marcus moved toward him.

“You need to explain yourself.””

Raymond looked at Marcus.

“You're the man who raised Lily.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

Raymond nodded.

“Then I owe you an apology.””

“For what?””

“For letting you believe she was yours.””

Marcus stared.

Raymond walked down the aisle.

“She was placed with you because you were the safest man they could find.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who is they?””

Raymond stopped.

“Vanessa.””

Marcus looked toward her.

She was crying.

Raymond continued.

“She knew the baby had been switched.””

Caleb stepped forward.

“Which baby?””

Raymond looked at him.

“Elijah.””

Caleb froze.

Marcus felt the room shift.

“Elijah was switched?””

Raymond nodded.

“At the hospital.””

Andre whispered, “By whom?””

Raymond looked directly at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Raymond pulled an old hospital photograph from his coat.

“This was taken twelve minutes after the birth.””

He handed it to Marcus.

Marcus studied it.

Two bassinets.

Two babies.

Two nurses.

Then he noticed something.

The bracelet on Baby A.

He looked at Lily.

Then back at the photograph.

“That's not Lily.””

Raymond shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus's heart pounded.

“Then where is Elijah?””

Nobody answered.

Raymond looked at Caleb.

“That's the question we've been asking for six years.””

Caleb's eyes filled with tears.

“You told me he died.””

Vanessa whispered, “I believed he died.””

Raymond shook his head.

“You never checked.””

“I was told he was gone.””

“By whom?””

Vanessa looked down.

Raymond's expression hardened.

“Say his name.””

Vanessa couldn't.

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Say it.””

She finally whispered:

“Dr. Warren.””

Andre's face changed.

“Dr. Warren?””

Raymond nodded.

“The same doctor who signed both death certificates.””

Marcus frowned.

“Both?””

Raymond looked at him.

“Elijah and the other baby.””

Marcus stared.

“You're saying both children were reported dead?””

“Yes.””

“But Caleb survived.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus looked at Caleb.

“Then who was the other baby?””

Caleb's face went pale.

Raymond answered.

“Lily.””

Marcus felt his knees weaken.

He looked at his daughter.

“No.””

Lily was still beside the pastor.

Her little fingers were wrapped around the pastor's sleeve.

Marcus walked toward her.

She looked up.

“Daddy?””

He knelt.

“You're okay.””

She smiled uncertainly.

“Are we going home?””

Marcus couldn't answer.

Caleb approached slowly.

Lily looked at him.

Something about his face made her stare.

Then she said:

“You have my eyes.””

Caleb broke down.

He covered his mouth and turned away.

Marcus looked at Raymond.

“If Lily is Caleb's daughter, then who is her mother?””

Raymond glanced at Vanessa.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Me.””

Marcus stared.

“But you said—”

“I lied.””

The word landed harder than anything else.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“I gave birth to Lily.””

Caleb stepped forward.

“And Elijah?””

Vanessa's tears fell.

“I don't know.””

Raymond suddenly looked toward the rear doors.

Everyone followed his gaze.

The church had become completely silent.

Raymond's phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

Marcus watched him carefully.

Raymond listened for several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“Where?””

He hung up.

Caleb asked, “What happened?””

Raymond looked at him.

“They found him.””

Vanessa gasped.

“Found who?””

Raymond turned toward Marcus.

“Your son.””

Marcus's heart stopped.

“My son?””

Raymond nodded.

“Elijah is alive.””

Vanessa stumbled backward.

Andre grabbed her arm.

“No…”

Raymond's eyes remained fixed on Marcus.

“And he's been living under another name.””

Marcus could barely breathe.

“What name?””

Raymond reached into his pocket and pulled out a driver's license.

He handed it to Marcus.

Marcus looked down.

The photograph showed a young Black man in his twenties.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same unmistakable features.

Marcus's fingers tightened around the license.

The name printed beneath the photograph was:

*JORDAN REED.*

Lily suddenly pointed at the picture.

Her face lit with recognition.

“Daddy…”

Marcus looked at her.

She whispered:

“That’s the man who comes to our house.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa was sobbing.

Raymond looked at the church doors.

“And he's here.””

The doors opened behind them.

A young man's voice called from the entrance:

“Mom?””

May you like

Vanessa looked up.

And Marcus turned around to face the son he had never known he had.
