Chapter 10: The Children He Stole

Marcus stared at the old man.

For twenty-two years, he had called him Dad.

Now the word felt poisonous.

“Daniel?””

Daniel White smiled.

Not the warm smile Marcus remembered from childhood.

Not the smile from family photographs.

This one was cold.

Possessive.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Jordan.

“I've spent six years cleaning up your father's mistakes,” he said.

Marcus's voice trembled.

“My father didn't make those mistakes.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“He made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted me.””

Raymond stepped forward.

“Daniel, it's over.””

Daniel laughed.

“You always were dramatic, Raymond.””

“You killed him.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“I didn't kill him.””

Simone's voice came through the phone.

“You ordered it.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

“I tried.””

Simone looked at Marcus.

“Your father discovered the adoption network. Daniel was the person moving the money.””

Marcus stared at Daniel.

“You sold babies?””

Daniel shrugged.

“I arranged placements.””

“You sold them.””

“I gave desperate families children they wanted.””

“You stole children.””

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“Your father wanted to expose me.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And you killed him.””

Daniel's silence was enough.

Lily moved closer to Marcus.

“Daddy?””

Marcus looked down.

Her eyes were frightened.

Daniel noticed.

“She doesn't belong to you.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“She belongs with me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't understand what she is.””

Marcus frowned.

“What she is?””

Daniel pointed toward Lily.

“She is the last piece of evidence.””

Marcus's stomach tightened.

“What evidence?””

Daniel looked at Raymond.

“Tell him.””

Raymond's face was wet with tears.

“Your father discovered that Daniel wasn't simply selling babies.””

Marcus waited.

Raymond swallowed.

“He was changing their identities.””

Marcus looked at Jordan.

“Why?””

“So nobody could trace them.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Some were adopted.””

“And some?””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus's voice rose.

“And some?””

Simone answered from the phone.

“Some were used to create false identities, false inheritances, false families.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Why her?””

Raymond stepped closer.

“Because Lily's birth records connect Daniel to every transaction.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Marcus understood.

“The blue box.””

Raymond nodded.

“Your father kept copies.””

“And Vanessa had them.””

“She took them from him.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa cried.

“I knew enough.””

“You could have told me.””

“They would have killed Lily.””

Daniel suddenly lunged toward Vanessa.

Marcus moved first.

He shoved Daniel backward.

Caleb grabbed Daniel's arm.

Andre blocked the aisle.

Guests scattered.

The pastor locked the front doors.

Daniel struggled.

“Let go of me!””

Caleb tightened his grip.

“You took my brother.””

Daniel stared at him.

“I saved you.””

“You stole my life.””

“You wouldn't have survived otherwise.””

Caleb's eyes filled with rage.

“You don't get to call that saving.””

Jordan stepped forward.

He looked at Daniel.

“Did you know who I was?””

Daniel stared at him.

“Yes.””

“Did you know I was Elijah?””

“Yes.””

Jordan's voice broke.

“Then why did you let me believe I was somebody else?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because Elijah Carter was dead on paper.””

Jordan shook his head.

“But alive in the world.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And you knew Lily was his daughter.””

Daniel nodded.

“I knew.””

“Then why did you leave her with me?””

“Because I needed someone innocent to raise her.””

Marcus stared.

“You picked me because of my father.””

“Yes.””

“You planned all of this.””

“No.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“She did.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus turned toward her.

She whispered:

“I thought I could protect you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You used me.””

“I know.””

“You married me.””

“I know.””

“You brought Lily into my life.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And then you tried to make me believe she was your child.””

“I wanted her to have a father.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She does.””

Vanessa's tears fell.

“I know.””

Daniel suddenly pulled free from Caleb.

He reached inside his coat.

Marcus shouted.

“Stop!””

Daniel froze.

A small black object was in his hand.

Not a weapon.

A phone.

He pressed the screen.

The church's large television above the altar suddenly came alive.

Documents appeared.

Bank transfers.

Hospital records.

Adoption contracts.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Every secret Daniel had spent years burying.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then a recording began.

His father's voice.

“If you're hearing this, Daniel has already betrayed me.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

“I don't know whether I'll survive long enough to expose him. But I know this: Vanessa is trying to save the twins. She isn't the enemy.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

The recording continued.

“Lily is my granddaughter.””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“Protect her.””

The screen went black.

Silence.

Daniel looked defeated.

Police sirens sounded outside.

Derrick slowly raised his hands.

“It's over.””

Daniel looked toward the doors.

Then toward Marcus.

“You think this changes anything?””

Marcus answered:

“It changes everything.””

The doors burst open.

Police officers rushed inside.

Daniel was handcuffed.

Derrick surrendered.

Andre stood beside Caleb.

Jordan walked slowly toward Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

He stopped in front of her.

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You lied to Marcus.””

“I know.””

“You lied about my mother.””

Vanessa's tears fell.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Jordan looked at Simone's image on the phone.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You should have trusted me with the truth.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I should have.””

Jordan turned away.

Marcus watched Lily approach Vanessa.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lily reached out.

“Are you still my aunt?””

Vanessa broke.

She fell to her knees and hugged the little girl.

“Yes.””

Lily whispered, “Even if you're bad?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I made bad choices.””

Lily thought about that.

Then she pulled away.

“Daddy says people can make better ones.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

Marcus didn't smile.

But he nodded.

Outside, rain fell against the church windows.

The wedding decorations remained exactly where they had been.

The white flowers.

The wooden pews.

The abandoned bouquet.

A wedding that had never happened.

A family that had almost been destroyed by secrets.

Marcus walked toward Lily.

She reached for his hand.

He took it.

Jordan stood nearby.

Caleb beside him.

Andre behind them.

For the first time, Marcus understood something his father had known all along.

Family wasn't always about blood.

Sometimes it was about who stayed when the truth came out.

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Ready to go home?””

She nodded.

Then she looked toward Jordan.

“Is he coming?””

Marcus followed her gaze.

Jordan smiled faintly.

“I think I am.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then let's go.””

They walked toward the doors together.

Behind them, Vanessa remained beside the altar, crying quietly as police led Daniel away.

Just before Marcus stepped outside, his phone vibrated.

He looked down.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Only four words:

*YOUR FATHER LEFT MORE.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Lily.

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

May you like

Whatever came next, he knew one thing.

This time, nobody was going to decide the truth for him.
