Chapter 5: The Secret in the Blue Box

Marcus followed Caleb into the church office.

Andre came behind them.

Vanessa stayed in the sanctuary, surrounded by stunned guests and white flowers that suddenly looked grotesquely bright.

Lily sat on a wooden chair beside the pastor.

Marcus shut the office door.

“Start talking.””

Caleb leaned against the desk.

“You want the truth?””

“I want all of it.””

Caleb nodded.

“My biological father isn't Andre.””

Marcus stared.

“Then who?””

Caleb looked at Andre.

Andre's eyes dropped.

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Andre shook his head.

“Not everything.””

Caleb laughed without humor.

“You knew enough.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is your father?””

Caleb reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out an old photograph.

An older Black man stood outside a small brick house.

Beside him was a younger Vanessa.

And standing behind them was a teenage Andre.

Marcus studied the man's face.

Then Caleb said:

“His name was Raymond Carter.””

Andre whispered, “Dad.””

Marcus looked at him.

“He was your father?””

“Yes.””

Caleb shook his head.

“He was supposed to be.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Caleb placed the photograph on the desk.

“Vanessa found out Raymond wasn't our biological father.””

Andre's face tightened.

“How do you know?””

“Because I found the records.””

“Where?””

“In the blue box.””

Marcus remembered Lily's words.

The box under Vanessa's bed.

He looked at Caleb.

“What was inside?””

“Birth records. Medical records. Letters.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“And pictures of Lily?””

Caleb nodded.

“Vanessa kept everything.””

Marcus opened the office door.

“Pastor, watch Lily.””

Then he looked toward the sanctuary.

Vanessa was gone.

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Where's Vanessa?””

The pastor stood.

“She went into the side hallway.””

Marcus ran.

He found her near the church nursery.

She was holding Lily's flower basket.

Her hands were shaking.

“Where is Lily?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I wasn't taking her.””

“Where is she?””

Vanessa pointed.

“She went into the nursery.””

Marcus rushed inside.

Lily was sitting on the floor beside a row of children's toys.

Marcus dropped to his knees.

“Come here.””

Lily ran into his arms.

He held her tightly.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded against his chest.

“Miss Vanessa was crying.””

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

Vanessa stood there.

“Marcus…”

He stepped between her and Lily.

“Don't come closer.””

Vanessa stopped.

“I need to tell you something.””

“You've had six years.””

“I was sixteen when I found out about the babies.””

Marcus frowned.

“You were thirty when Lily was born.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“No. I mean I found out about the pregnancy six years ago.””

“You're not making sense.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I wasn't the mother.””

Marcus froze.

Andre appeared behind her.

Caleb followed.

Everyone went silent.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered, “I carried them.””

Andre shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“I was the surrogate.””

Caleb stepped forward.

“You lied again.””

“No.””

“You said Mom carried us.””

“She couldn't.””

Marcus looked at Andre.

“Your mother?””

Andre nodded slowly.

“She died before the boys were born.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She couldn't carry the pregnancy.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

The pieces refused to fit.

“Then whose babies were they?””

Vanessa's eyes moved to Caleb.

“Raymond's.””

Andre's face went pale.

“What?””

“Raymond had another family.””

Caleb whispered, “You're lying.””

“I wish I were.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“What does this have to do with my daughter?””

Vanessa's expression broke.

“Everything.””

She walked toward the blue box sitting on a shelf in the nursery closet.

Marcus stared.

“You brought it here?””

“I knew someone would come looking.””

Caleb took the box.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside were hospital bracelets.

Photographs.

Letters.

And a sealed envelope.

Caleb picked it up.

His name was written across the front.

*CALEB — OPEN ONLY IF VANESSA ADMITS THE TRUTH.*

He looked at Vanessa.

“You knew I'd come.””

Vanessa whispered, “I was hoping you wouldn't.””

Caleb opened the envelope.

He pulled out a single sheet of paper.

His eyes moved across it.

Then his face changed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Caleb couldn't speak.

Andre took the paper.

He read it.

His knees nearly gave out.

Marcus grabbed his shoulder.

“What?””

Andre looked at him.

“The DNA test.””

Marcus stared.

“Whose DNA?””

Andre's lips trembled.

“Caleb's.””

“And?””

Andre looked toward Lily.

“And Lily's.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Caleb.

“You're related.””

Caleb nodded.

“She's my daughter.””

Vanessa burst into tears.

Marcus stepped backward.

“No.””

Caleb stared at him.

“Marcus, listen.””

“No.””

“You need to know what happened.””

“You're saying my daughter is yours?””

Caleb's voice broke.

“Biologically.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Then why did Vanessa give her to me?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

“She didn't.””

Marcus's face went cold.

“What?””

Caleb swallowed.

“Someone else did.””

The lights in the nursery suddenly flickered.

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

A man's shadow moved across the floor.

Then the church's front doors slammed open.

A voice shouted from the sanctuary:

“Everybody get away from Vanessa!””

May you like

Marcus turned.

And recognized the voice.
