Chapter 4: The Man Outside

The church doors opened slowly.

Marcus stood frozen in the aisle, Lily's small hand locked inside his.

A man stepped through the doorway.

He was Black, tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark gray suit that looked expensive but slightly rumpled, as though he had driven for hours to get there. His eyes were fixed on Marcus.

Vanessa made a sound somewhere between a sob and a gasp.

“No…”

Andre turned toward him.

“Caleb.””

The man's jaw tightened.

“Don't call me that.””

Marcus stared.

His face felt numb.

The man looked remarkably familiar.

Not identical to Marcus.

But close enough to make the room seem suddenly smaller.

Same deep-set eyes.

Same broad nose.

Same shape around the mouth.

Lily looked up at him.

The stranger looked down at her.

And his expression collapsed.

Marcus stepped in front of Lily.

“Stay behind me.””

The stranger raised both hands.

“I'm not here to hurt her.””

Marcus's voice was cold.

“Then tell me why you know my name.””

The man swallowed.

“My name is Caleb Carter.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

Marcus looked at her.

“You said you didn't know where he was.””

“I didn't.””

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“You knew exactly where I was.””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“You knew I was alive.””

“I thought you were dead.””

“You thought wrong.””

A guest near the front pew whispered, “This can't be real.””

Another woman began crying.

Marcus ignored them.

His eyes stayed on Caleb.

“You said I'm not Lily's father.””

Caleb nodded.

“Biologically, no.””

“Then who is?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

“She is.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Caleb continued.

“She took Lily from the hospital.””

Vanessa shouted, “That's a lie!””

Caleb's voice rose.

“Then tell him where you got her!””

Vanessa fell silent.

Marcus looked down at Lily.

His daughter was watching all three adults with frightened eyes.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “am I in trouble?””

Marcus immediately crouched.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Why is everybody yelling?””

“Because grown-ups made terrible choices.””

Lily looked toward Caleb.

“Do I know you?””

Caleb's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

Then he corrected himself.

“Not yet.””

Marcus stood.

“You're saying this man is your son?””

Andre's voice was quiet.

“My brother.””

Marcus looked at him.

Andre nodded toward Caleb.

“We were twins.””

Caleb reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a worn envelope.

“I brought proof.””

Vanessa moved forward.

“Marcus, don't.””

He turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what happened.””

“Then help me understand.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You've been lying to me since the day we met.””

“I was trying to give Lily a family.””

“She already had one.””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward Lily.

“She had a father who was going to abandon her.””

Marcus recoiled.

“What did you just say?””

Caleb stepped forward.

“She told you I was dead, didn't she?””

Marcus looked at him.

Caleb nodded toward Lily.

“She told me you weren't interested in raising a child.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“I never met you.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus frowned.

Caleb pulled a folded document from the envelope.

“You couldn't have.””

He handed it over.

Marcus unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

It was a hospital birth record.

Two babies.

Two names.

Two birth times separated by four minutes.

Mother: Vanessa Carter.

Father: Andre Carter.

Marcus looked up.

“But Lily isn't on this.””

“No,” Caleb said.

“She was registered under another name.””

Marcus's stomach tightened.

“What name?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

“Amelia.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus turned toward Lily.

His little girl was still wearing the flower-girl dress.

Still holding the tiny basket.

Still waiting for him to make sense of a world that had suddenly broken apart.

Marcus knelt again.

“Lily.””

She looked at him.

“Yeah?””

“Do you remember being called anything else?””

She frowned.

“Sometimes Miss Vanessa called me Amy.””

Marcus's head snapped toward Vanessa.

“You told me that was a nickname.””

“It was.””

“No.””

Vanessa began crying.

“No, Marcus. Please.””

He stood.

“You stole a baby.””

“I saved her.””

“You stole her.””

“She was going to die!””

Caleb stared at Vanessa.

“She wasn't dying.””

“She was sick!””

“She had a fever!””

“She was losing blood!””

“You panicked.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Andre stepped closer.

“You didn't just take Lily.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You took both of them.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Andre's voice shook.

“You took Caleb too.””

Caleb looked away.

Marcus stared between the brothers.

Vanessa whispered, “I couldn't lose them.””

Andre shook his head.

“You already had.””

Marcus's phone vibrated.

A new message.

He looked down.

It was from the same unknown number.

*ASK CALEB WHO HE BELIEVES IS HIS REAL FATHER.*

Marcus looked up.

Caleb was already staring at him.

And for the first time, fear appeared in Caleb's eyes.

“Don't ask me that here.””
