Chapter 2: The Sealed Document

Daniel stood halfway between the stage and his mother.

The medal was still clenched in his hand.

Sarah stared at the sealed envelope.

“What did he sign?”” she asked again.

The senior officer did not answer immediately.

Robert stood so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“Sir,” Robert said, “that document has nothing to do with this ceremony.””

The officer looked directly at him.

“Sit down, Mr. Hayes.””

Robert stopped.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Robert, sit.””

He slowly lowered himself back into the chair.

Daniel turned toward his father.

“What did you sign?””

Robert looked at him.

“Daniel, this isn't the place.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Then why is my commanding officer holding a military document with your name on it?””

A murmur moved through the audience.

Sarah took one step closer.

“Robert?””

He wouldn't look at her.

Vanessa stood.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You just told my mother she wasn't family.””

Daniel’s voice echoed through the hall.

“You knew something was happening.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I was trying to protect your father.””

“From what?””

She said nothing.

Sarah walked slowly toward them.

Her elegant navy gown moved softly against the wooden floor.

“Robert,” she said, “what did you sign?””

Robert finally raised his eyes.

For the first time that morning, Sarah saw fear in his face.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

“I signed something a long time ago,” he said.

Sarah stopped.

“How long?””

Robert hesitated.

“Almost twenty years.””

Sarah’s breathing changed.

Daniel stared at him.

“Twenty years?””

Robert rubbed his palm against his knee.

“It was complicated.””

Sarah let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.

“Complicated?””

Her eyes filled again.

“You let that woman pull my chair away from me in front of everyone, and now you're telling me you've been hiding something for twenty years?””

Vanessa snapped, “Don't blame me for something Robert decided.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You said you knew exactly who she was.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I did.””

“Then explain.””

“I don't owe you an explanation.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You're standing between me and my mother.””

Vanessa took a step back.

Sarah reached for Daniel's arm.

“Son.””

He looked at her.

She shook her head gently.

“Don't.””

“Mom, you shouldn't have been sitting alone.””

“I can handle a chair.””

“You shouldn't have had to.””

Her voice softened.

“I didn't come here for a seat.””

Daniel looked at her clutch.

“What did you bring?””

Sarah opened it.

Inside was a small, faded photograph.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

He had been eight years old.

Sarah was younger, smiling beside him at a school field day.

Daniel touched the photograph.

“You still have this?””

“Of course.””

He smiled faintly.

“You kept everything.””

“Not everything.””

The words came out strangely.

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah closed the clutch.

Before she could answer, the senior officer stepped down from the stage.

He approached them with the sealed envelope.

“Lieutenant, there are things you deserve to know before you present that medal.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“Is my father mentioned in there?””

“Yes.””

“Is my mother?””

The officer paused.

“Yes.””

Sarah's face changed.

Robert whispered, “Sir, please.””

The officer looked at him.

“You had your opportunity to tell them.””

Robert's eyes closed.

Daniel slowly turned.

“Tell us what?””

No one answered.

Then Sarah noticed something printed in the corner of the envelope.

Her maiden name.

Not Hayes.

Her old name.

The name she had stopped using almost twenty years earlier.

Sarah reached for the document.

The senior officer held it just out of reach.

“Mrs. Hayes,” he said quietly, “before you open this, there is one thing you need to understand.””

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

He glanced at Robert.

Then back at her.

“This document says Daniel was never supposed to know who paid for his military education.””

Sarah’s face went completely still.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Paid for my education?””

Robert said nothing.

Sarah whispered, “Robert… what did you do?””

The senior officer broke the seal.

But before he could unfold the first page, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A black-uniformed military attorney stepped inside.

He looked straight at Sarah.

“Mrs. Sarah Hayes?””

She turned.

“Yes?””

The attorney held another folder against his chest.

“I’m sorry, but there’s been a change.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“What change?””

The attorney looked at Daniel.

Then at Robert.

Then back at Sarah.

“We need you to hear this before your father leaves the building.””

May you like

Robert suddenly stood.

And for the first time, Daniel saw his father move toward the exit.
