Chapter 4: The Name on the Form
Robert was three steps from the ballroom doors when Daniel’s voice stopped him.
“Dad.””
Robert froze.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Daniel walked toward him, medal still in his hand.
“You’re not leaving.””
Robert slowly turned.
His face had lost all its color.
“I need to make a phone call.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You need to answer me.””
Vanessa hurried after Robert.
“Daniel, this is becoming inappropriate.””
Daniel looked at her.
“My mother was humiliated in front of two hundred people, and now my father is trying to leave because a military attorney brought a file with his name on it.””
His voice cracked.
“I think we passed inappropriate ten minutes ago.””
Sarah stood behind him, clutching her purse against her waist.
The attorney stepped forward.
“My name is Captain Marcus Reed. I’m with the Army legal office.””
Robert shook his head.
“This isn't necessary.””
Captain Reed opened the folder.
“It became necessary when we discovered a discrepancy in Lieutenant Hayes’s personnel history.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What discrepancy?””
The captain looked at Sarah.
“Your mother’s name appears in documents connected to your original education funding.””
Sarah’s eyebrows drew together.
“I never funded Daniel’s military education.””
Robert shut his eyes.
Daniel noticed.
“Dad?””
Robert whispered, “Sarah…”
She turned toward him.
“What?””
Robert looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said the words that made her face change.
“You did.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“You just don't remember.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Captain Reed opened the first page.
“Twenty years ago, when Daniel was four, there was an investment account established under the name Sarah Elaine Brooks.””
Sarah's maiden name.
Her fingers went numb.
“I never had an investment account.””
“You did,” Robert said.
She stared at him.
“You know about this?””
“I was the one who opened it.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Why would you open an account in Mom’s name?””
Robert didn't answer.
Vanessa suddenly whispered, “Robert, tell them the truth.””
Sarah turned sharply.
“You knew too?””
Vanessa's smug expression finally disappeared.
“I found out last year.””
Sarah took a step toward her.
“Last year?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Robert showed me the records.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Because he was afraid you'd discover what happened.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What happened?””
Robert looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“A mistake doesn't last twenty years.””
Robert's voice trembled.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
He finally looked at her.
“From losing everything.””
Sarah went completely still.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Dad, stop talking around it.””
Robert swallowed.
“When you were four, Daniel's biological father—”
Sarah gasped.
“Don't.””
Robert stopped.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Biological father?””
The words seemed to hit the room like a gunshot.
Vanessa looked away.
Captain Reed lowered the folder.
Sarah's lips trembled.
“Daniel doesn't need to hear this here.””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Yes, I do.””
She shook her head.
“Not like this.””
“You've known?””
“No.””
“You just said biological father.””
Sarah looked at him.
“I meant—”
Robert interrupted.
“I lied to you.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You lied about my father?””
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
“I raised you.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“I know.””
“Who is my father?””
Robert couldn't answer.
Daniel looked at Captain Reed.
“Does that file say?””
The captain hesitated.
“It contains information regarding your family history.””
Daniel held out his hand.
“Give it to me.””
Captain Reed handed him the document.
Daniel unfolded the first page.
His eyes moved across the lines.
Then stopped.
He read the name at the bottom.
His breathing changed.
“Mom…”
Sarah looked terrified.
“What?””
Daniel slowly turned the page toward her.
“Why is your signature on this?””
Sarah stared at the signature.
It looked like hers.
But she had never seen it before.
“I didn't sign that.””
Robert whispered, “You did.””
“I did not.””
“You signed it when you were in the hospital.””
Sarah's eyes widened.
“What hospital?””
Robert said nothing.
Sarah’s voice became sharper.
“What hospital, Robert?””
“The night Daniel was born.””
A chair scraped loudly somewhere behind them.
Sarah looked as though the floor had shifted beneath her.
“I remember Daniel's birth.””
“Yes.””
“I remember the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“I remember you were there.””
Robert nodded.
“Then why don't I remember signing anything?””
Robert's silence answered her.
Daniel looked down at the document again.
At the bottom was a sentence that made his stomach tighten.
He read it aloud.
“‘All parental rights and financial claims shall remain sealed until the child reaches the age of twenty-five.’”
Daniel looked up.
“I’m twenty-four.””
Captain Reed nodded.
“Which is why the Army recently flagged the file.””
Sarah whispered, “Twenty-five?””
Daniel turned to her.
“So there’s another year before I’m supposed to know?””
Captain Reed shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
He reached into his folder and pulled out a second document.
“Because someone requested the seal be broken.””
Sarah looked at Robert.
Robert's face collapsed.
“You didn't.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
Daniel stared at his father.
“Did you request it?””
Robert whispered, “No.””
“Then who did?””
Captain Reed looked at the doorway.
“We don't know.””
At that exact moment, a phone on the front table began ringing.
Everyone turned.
Sarah recognized the ringtone.
It was hers.
Her clutch was still in her hand.
But her phone was not inside.
The ringing came from the chair where she had been forced to sit alone.
Sarah walked toward it.
A stranger had left a black phone on the seat.
The screen lit up.
One message appeared.
