Chapter 6: The Man in the Doorway

Sarah couldn't move.

The man standing beneath the American flags looked older than the memory in her mind, but there was no mistaking him.

The same eyes.

The same crooked smile.

The small scar above his eyebrow.

“Michael?””

His face crumpled.

“Yes.””

Sarah took one step toward him.

Then another.

Daniel watched her.

“Mom?””

She didn't hear him.

Michael walked slowly into the room.

Robert stood frozen beside the chairs.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh God.””

Michael looked at Robert.

“You should have told her.””

Robert's voice was barely audible.

“I tried.””

Michael laughed once.

“No, you didn't.””

Sarah stopped several feet away.

“You're alive.””

Michael nodded.

“For eighteen years.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

“Because Robert made sure you believed I was dead.””

Robert shook his head.

“I never wanted that.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“You signed the papers.””

Daniel turned toward his father.

“You signed papers saying Uncle Michael was dead?””

Robert looked at him.

“I didn't know they would use them that way.””

Michael stepped closer.

“You knew exactly what they were for.””

Sarah's breathing quickened.

“Why would Robert want you gone?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Because of your birth.””

Daniel stiffened.

“What happened when I was born?””

Michael looked at Sarah.

“I came to the hospital because you asked me to.””

Sarah frowned.

“I don't remember asking you.””

“You did.””

“When?””

“The night before.””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't remember.””

Michael's eyes softened.

“You were frightened.””

Robert interrupted.

“She was confused.””

Michael turned.

“You don't get to speak for her anymore.””

Robert lowered his head.

Sarah looked between them.

“What was I frightened about?””

Michael hesitated.

“You had discovered that Daniel wasn't safe.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Safe from what?””

Michael looked at him.

“From being taken.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“Taken?””

Michael nodded.

“You were told someone was going to claim custody.””

Robert stepped forward.

“That wasn't true.””

Michael snapped, “It became true when you signed the agreement.””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“What agreement?””

Robert rubbed his face.

“The hospital had paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“Custody paperwork.””

Sarah's voice broke.

“Whose custody?””

Robert looked at her.

“Not mine.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

Sarah whispered, “You weren't his father?””

“I raised him.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Robert's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

Daniel stepped backward.

The room seemed to tilt.

Michael said quietly, “Robert became Daniel's legal father after the original records were sealed.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then who was my biological father?””

Michael looked at Sarah.

She looked terrified.

“Tell him,” she whispered.

Michael took a breath.

“His name was Marcus Cole.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I've never heard that name.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Robert suddenly sat down.

Daniel turned toward him.

“Dad?””

Robert stared at the floor.

“I loved you.””

Daniel's eyes burned.

“That doesn't answer me.””

“I know.””

“Did you know who my father was?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since the day you were born.””

Daniel looked as if he'd been struck.

Sarah's voice was barely audible.

“What happened to Marcus?””

No one answered.

Michael looked at Robert.

Robert's hands began shaking.

Finally, he said:

“He died.””

Sarah stared at him.

“When?””

Robert couldn't meet her eyes.

“The night Daniel was born.””

Sarah's face went pale.

Michael added quietly, “And that's the part Robert never told you.””

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What part?””

Michael reached inside his jacket and removed a folded document.

“The official story says Marcus died in a car accident.””

Sarah shook her head.

“But?””

Michael looked toward Robert.

“He wasn't in a car.””

Robert closed his eyes.

Daniel's voice became cold.

“What are you saying?””

Michael unfolded the paper.

“He was at the hospital.””

Sarah's hand flew to her mouth.

Michael continued.

“He came to see you and Daniel.””

Robert stood abruptly.

“Stop.””

Michael didn't.

“He was alive when he entered that building.””

Daniel stared at his father.

“And dead when he left?””

Michael nodded.

Daniel's breathing became shallow.

“Who killed him?””

Michael looked at Robert.

Robert whispered, “I didn't.””

Michael said, “Maybe not.””

Sarah stared at him.

“Then who?””

Michael hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

“Then why did you disappear?””

Michael's eyes filled.

“Because I found evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“That Marcus's death wasn't an accident.””

Daniel stared.

Michael reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small photograph.

He handed it to Daniel.

It showed a hospital hallway.

Robert stood near a doorway.

A nurse stood beside him.

And behind them was another man.

Daniel looked closer.

His expression changed.

“That's…”

Sarah whispered, “Who?””

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“That's the senior officer from the stage.””

Everyone turned toward the podium.

The senior officer was still standing there.

He looked at the photograph.

His face went pale.

Michael whispered, “He was there that night.””

Daniel walked toward him.

“Sir?””

The officer didn't move.

Daniel held up the photograph.

“You knew my father.””

The officer's eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

“What happened to him?””

The officer looked at Sarah.

Then at Robert.

Then at Daniel.

“I wasn't supposed to tell you until your twenty-fifth birthday.””

Daniel's voice shook.

“But I'm twenty-four.””

The officer nodded.

“That was the agreement.””

“Who made it?””

The officer's answer came quietly.

“Your mother.””

Sarah's face drained of color.

“I never made any agreement.””

The officer reached beneath the podium again.

This time, he pulled out a sealed envelope bearing Sarah's signature.

He placed it on the podium.

Daniel stared at it.

Michael took one step closer.

Robert whispered:

“Sarah… you need to remember.””

Sarah looked at the envelope.

Her hands trembled.

Then the officer spoke.

“Mrs. Hayes, the signature is yours.””

Sarah slowly approached.

“What does it say?””

The officer looked at her.

“It says that if Marcus Cole ever died under suspicious circumstances…”

He stopped.

Sarah's eyes locked onto his.

“And?””

The officer turned the envelope over.

May you like

There was one final line written across the back.

*THE PERSON WHO CAUSED HIS DEATH MUST NEVER KNOW DANIEL IS ALIVE.*
