Chapter 8: The Colonel's Secret
The man entered the ballroom without hurrying.
He wore a dark civilian coat over an old military uniform shirt.
His hair was silver.
His posture was straight.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
Captain Reed moved between him and Daniel.
“Sir, identify yourself.””
The man stopped.
“Colonel James Whitaker.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You're the colonel she was talking about.””
Whitaker looked at Vanessa.
Then at Robert.
“You should have destroyed the letter.””
Robert's face went white.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew my father?””
Whitaker looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Marcus Cole?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell my father Marcus was dead?””
Whitaker paused.
“Yes.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“Why?””
Whitaker looked at her.
“Because I believed he was.””
Michael laughed.
“You're lying.””
Whitaker's eyes moved to him.
“You disappeared for eighteen years.””
“Because you tried to kill me.””
A murmur spread through the audience.
Whitaker's expression hardened.
“I never ordered anyone to kill you.””
“You ordered them to silence me.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What did Michael know?””
Whitaker didn't answer.
Daniel raised his voice.
“What did he know?””
Whitaker finally said, “Marcus discovered an internal fraud investigation.””
Sarah shook her head.
“The money.””
“Yes.””
“Who stole it?””
Whitaker looked toward Robert.
“Not Robert.””
Robert closed his eyes.
Sarah turned to him.
“You were innocent?””
“I was stupid,” Robert said.
“What did you do?””
Robert swallowed.
“I signed documents I didn't understand.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“What documents?””
“The custody agreement.””
Sarah stared at him.
“You signed away your rights?””
“I thought I was saving you.””
“You let me believe my son was yours.””
“I loved him.””
Sarah's voice broke.
“And you let me believe my brother was dead.””
Robert had no answer.
Whitaker stepped forward.
“Robert was ordered to cooperate.””
Michael shook his head.
“By whom?””
Whitaker looked at him.
“By someone above me.””
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Whitaker didn't answer.
Captain Reed stepped in.
“Colonel, you're obstructing an active investigation.””
Whitaker smiled faintly.
“No, Captain. I'm preventing you from making the same mistake everyone made eighteen years ago.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“What mistake?””
Whitaker reached into his coat.
Robert shouted, “Don't!””
Everyone flinched.
But Whitaker only removed a small flash drive.
He placed it on the podium.
“This contains the original hospital security footage.””
Sarah stared at it.
“You have it?””
“I kept a copy.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew someday someone would need the truth.””
Daniel looked at Captain Reed.
“Play it.””
The captain connected the drive to a laptop.
The screen flickered.
A grainy hallway appeared.
Timestamp:
*11:47 P.M.*
Sarah moved closer.
A younger Marcus appeared.
He walked down the corridor.
Sarah's breath caught.
“That’s him.””
Then Robert appeared.
He approached Marcus.
They argued.
No sound.
Marcus pointed toward a room.
Robert shook his head.
Then another man entered the frame.
Sarah stared.
She didn't recognize him.
Michael stepped closer.
“That's him.””
“Who?””
“The doctor.””
Daniel frowned.
“What doctor?””
“The doctor who delivered you.””
Sarah's face went pale.
The footage continued.
The doctor handed Robert an envelope.
Robert opened it.
His expression changed.
Then Marcus grabbed Robert by the collar.
Robert pushed him away.
Marcus stumbled.
The screen froze.
Daniel whispered, “Did Dad hurt him?””
Robert shook his head violently.
“No.””
The video resumed.
Marcus walked away.
Then the lights flickered.
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
The image became distorted.
A loud bang was visible but inaudible.
Marcus collapsed.
Sarah screamed.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The figure approached Marcus.
Then bent down.
The video cut to black.
Nobody spoke.
Captain Reed replayed the final seconds.
“Enhance the frame.””
The image sharpened.
The figure's face became slightly clearer.
Daniel leaned closer.
Robert whispered:
“No…”
Sarah looked at him.
“You know him.””
Robert's eyes filled with terror.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Robert pointed at the screen.
His hand shook.
“That man was the hospital administrator.””
Whitaker shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
Daniel turned.
“What does that mean?””
Whitaker looked at Sarah.
“He changed his identity.””
Michael stared at him.
“You found him?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Whitaker reached into his pocket.
“I was going to tell you after the ceremony.””
Daniel's voice became urgent.
“Tell us now.””
Whitaker pulled out a photograph.
He placed it beside the laptop.
The photograph showed a gray-haired man outside a courthouse.
Sarah stared at the face.
Then her eyes widened.
She recognized him.
Not from the hospital.
From somewhere else.
She whispered:
“He was at Daniel's adoption hearing.””
Robert's head snapped toward her.
Sarah turned slowly.
“And he wasn't the judge.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“He was sitting behind you.””
Daniel looked at the photo.
Then at Whitaker.
“Who is he?””
Whitaker took a breath.
“His name is Dr. Samuel Grant.””
Michael's face suddenly changed.
“Grant?””
“Yes.””
Michael stepped backward.
“I know that name.””
Daniel looked at him.
“How?””
Michael stared at the photograph.
“Because Marcus told me one thing before he disappeared.””
“What?””
Michael's voice dropped to a whisper.
“He said if anything happened to him, never trust the man named Grant.””
A phone began ringing.
Everyone turned.
This time, it was Captain Reed's.
He answered.
“Reed.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
Silence.
Then he looked directly at Sarah.
“Mrs. Hayes…”
“What?””
“We just received confirmation.””
“Of what?””
Captain Reed lowered the phone.
“Dr. Samuel Grant is here.””
Sarah's blood ran cold.
“Where?””
May you like
The captain looked toward the ballroom doors.
“He's been sitting in the family section this entire time.””
