Chapter 9: The Stranger in the Family Row
Every chair in the family section suddenly looked occupied.
Sarah stared at the rows.
Faces turned.
People whispered.
Then Daniel saw him.
Third row.
Near the aisle.
A gray-haired Black man in a dark suit sat calmly with his hands folded over a cane.
Dr. Samuel Grant.
He didn't look frightened.
He looked almost relieved.
Daniel walked toward him.
“Stand up.””
Grant slowly raised his eyes.
“You have your father's temper.””
Daniel stopped.
“My father?””
Grant smiled faintly.
“Which one?””
Sarah's breath caught.
Michael stepped forward.
“Don't play games.””
Grant looked at him.
“You survived.””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“Because you failed.””
Grant's smile disappeared.
“You were supposed to leave the country.””
“I did.””
“And yet here you are.””
“I came back for my sister.””
Sarah stepped between them.
“Why were you at my son's ceremony?””
Grant looked at her.
“Because you invited me.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I've never met you.””
Grant reached into his jacket.
Daniel immediately moved in front of his mother.
“Don't.””
Grant stopped.
Slowly, he pulled out a photograph.
He held it up.
Sarah stared.
It was an old picture of her, Robert, and baby Daniel.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING ME.*
Sarah's face changed.
“I never gave you that.””
“No.””
Grant lowered the photograph.
“You gave it to Marcus.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Where did you get it?””
Grant looked at him.
“From Marcus.””
Michael froze.
“Marcus is alive.””
Grant didn't answer.
Sarah whispered, “Where is my son's father?””
Grant's eyes shifted toward Daniel.
“He's closer than you think.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
Grant looked at Robert.
Robert's face collapsed.
“You told me he was dead.””
Grant sighed.
“I told you what you needed to hear.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel turned toward his father.
“You knew?””
Robert whispered, “I didn't know.””
Grant stood.
“You knew enough.””
Captain Reed moved closer.
“Dr. Grant, you're coming with us.””
Grant smiled.
“I expected that.””
He reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a small key.
He held it toward Sarah.
“Your son deserves to know why you signed the agreement.””
Sarah stared at the key.
“I didn't.””
“You did.””
“I don't remember.””
Grant's expression softened.
“You asked me to make sure Daniel survived.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Survived what?””
Grant glanced around the room.
“Your father wasn't the only person targeted that night.””
Sarah whispered, “Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“Who else?””
Grant looked directly at Daniel.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Daniel shook his head.
“I was four.””
“You were the evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Grant took a breath.
“Marcus discovered that the Army had been used to conceal a private adoption network.””
Michael's eyes widened.
“What?””
Grant nodded.
“Children were being transferred under false identities.””
Sarah's hand went to her mouth.
“My son?””
“Daniel was never supposed to leave that hospital under your name.””
Robert stepped forward.
“That's not true.””
Grant looked at him.
“You signed the papers.””
“Because they threatened Sarah.””
“And you believed them.””
“I had no choice.””
Grant turned toward Daniel.
“You were moved to another room before midnight.””
Sarah's face went pale.
“I remember holding him.””
“You held him after the transfer.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Grant nodded toward Michael.
“Ask your uncle.””
Daniel turned.
“Michael?””
Michael looked devastated.
“I found you.””
“Where?””
“In the neonatal wing.””
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you take me?””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was too late.””
Sarah began crying silently.
Michael continued.
“I found Marcus bleeding in the hallway.””
“What happened?””
“He told me to get you out.””
Sarah whispered, “And you did?””
“I tried.””
“Why don't I remember?””
Grant answered.
“Because you were sedated.””
Sarah looked at him.
“You sedated me?””
“I was ordered to.””
“By whom?””
Grant looked toward Whitaker.
Whitaker shook his head.
“Not me.””
Grant's eyes moved to Robert.
Robert whispered, “Don't.””
Daniel turned.
“Dad?””
Robert stared at his son.
Then he finally broke.
“I signed the order.””
Sarah stepped backward.
“You drugged me?””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“You took my memories.””
“No.””
“You took my choice.””
Robert covered his face.
Daniel looked at him with tears in his eyes.
“I trusted you.””
Robert whispered, “I know.””
Then Grant said quietly:
“There's something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Grant held up the key.
“This opens a safety deposit box Marcus left for Daniel.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Where?””
Grant looked at Daniel.
“Under your father's name.””
Robert suddenly lunged for the key.
Daniel caught his wrist.
“Why?””
Robert stared at the key.
“Because if you open that box, everything ends.””
Daniel's voice trembled.
“What ends?””
Robert looked at Sarah.
Then Michael.
Then his son.
“My lie.””
Daniel released his father's wrist.
Captain Reed took the key from Grant.
“We'll open it under legal supervision.””
Grant nodded.
But before Captain Reed could move, Daniel noticed something on the floor.
A small white envelope had slipped from Grant's coat.
Daniel picked it up.
His name was written across the front.
*DANIEL — OPEN ONLY AFTER YOU SEE YOUR FATHER CRY.*
Daniel looked at Robert.
Robert's eyes widened.
“Where did you get that?””
Grant said nothing.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
His hands began shaking.
It showed Marcus Cole.
Older.
Alive.
Standing beside a woman Daniel recognized immediately.
Sarah.
But Sarah was wearing a hospital gown.
And in her arms was a newborn baby.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then he saw the date printed in the corner.
It was three days *after* Marcus was supposedly killed.
Daniel looked up.
“Mom…”
Sarah stared at the photograph.
Her face went completely white.
Because she remembered that day.
And the man standing beside her in the photograph wasn't Marcus.
May you like
It was Robert.
And Robert was holding a second baby.
