Chapter 10: The Voice in the Dark
The emergency lights flickered on one by one.
A dim red glow filled the hallway.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone had heard the voice.
It was close.
Too close.
Captain Marcus Reed immediately reached for his sidearm.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
His voice was calm.
Controlled.
But his eyes moved quickly across every corner of the hallway.
The evidence room.
The security cameras.
The doors.
The shadows.
Nia Carter stood frozen.
She knew that voice.
Not because she had heard it recently.
Because some part of her had been waiting to hear it again.
Marcus looked at her.
“Nia.””
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes were fixed on the dark hallway ahead.
“Nia, who was that?””
Her lips parted.
But the memory came in pieces.
A uniform.
A hand.
A voice telling her not to fight.
She whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Concern.
“You said you remembered.””
“I remember the voice.””
The red emergency lights flashed.
“I don’t remember the face.””
Maya Brooks gripped her microphone tightly.
“This is insane.””
Evelyn Cross looked toward the hallway.
Her expression was not confusion.
It was recognition.
Marcus noticed.
“Mrs. Cross.””
She looked at him.
“You know.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You recognized the voice.””
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
Nia turned.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn looked terrified.
“I can’t say.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because if I’m right…”
She swallowed.
“…we’re already too late.””
A sound came from the end of the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Someone who wasn’t running.
Someone who wanted them to know they were coming.
Marcus raised his weapon.
“Identify yourself.””
No answer.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came again.
“You always were stubborn, Carter.””
Nia felt her heart drop.
That sentence.
That exact sentence.
A memory surfaced.
A room.
A table.
Daniel Hayes sitting across from her.
A mission file between them.
And someone standing behind her.
Someone saying:
You always were stubborn, Carter.
She closed her eyes.
“I know who it is.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Nia opened her eyes.
But before she could speak, the hallway lights returned.
The person was gone.
Only an object remained on the floor.
A small black folder.
Marcus approached carefully.
“Stay back.””
He picked it up.
No markings.
No name.
Just one word written on the front.
*REMEMBER.*
Nia stared at it.
She knew that handwriting.
Her breathing changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Nia?””
She whispered:
“Daniel.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
“That’s Daniel’s handwriting.””
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not of the SUV.
Not of the crash.
A photograph from six months earlier.
Operation Silent Shield.
Four soldiers standing together.
Nia.
Daniel Hayes.
And two others.
Marcus looked at the image.
“Who are the others?””
Nia stared.
She knew.
But she couldn’t say it.
Because one person in the photograph was impossible.
The other was standing ten feet away.
Evelyn Cross.
Marcus looked at her.
“Mrs. Cross?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I was there.””
The words shocked everyone.
Maya stepped forward.
“You were part of the operation?””
“No.””
“Then why are you in the picture?””
Evelyn looked at Nia.
“Because your mission was protecting someone.””
Nia looked confused.
“Who?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Marcus turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
A message.
*THE TARGET WAS NEVER THE ENEMY.*
Marcus looked at Nia.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could respond, the building alarm sounded.
Not a normal alarm.
A lockdown alarm.
The officer at the security station shouted:
“Captain!””
Marcus turned.
“What now?””
“The base network has been compromised.””
“How?””
The officer stared at the screen.
“Someone uploaded a classified file to every terminal.””
Marcus walked over.
The file was already open.
A mission report.
Operation Silent Shield.
But it wasn’t the official version.
The title was different.
*OPERATION SILENT SHIELD: INTERNAL BETRAYAL REPORT*
Marcus read the first line.
Then stopped.
Nia saw his face.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked at her.
“It says the mission failed because someone inside the unit leaked information.””
Nia felt cold.
“Who?””
Marcus continued reading.
Then slowly looked up.
“The report names the traitor.””
Everyone waited.
Maya whispered:
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Because the name was unbelievable.
Finally, he said:
“Sergeant Nia Carter.””
The hallway went silent.
Nia stared.
“No.””
Marcus looked at the report.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“That’s not possible.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Someone changed the report.””
Marcus nodded.
“I believe that.””
But Nia looked at the screen.
Because beneath the accusation was something worse.
A signature.
A verification code.
And a date.
The report had been signed the day after her injury.
By someone who had access to everything.
Marcus looked at the final line.
And his face hardened.
Because the report contained one sentence.
May you like
One sentence that explained why someone wanted Nia’s memory erased.
*Sergeant Carter must never remember what she witnessed.*
