Chapter 12: The Soldier Who Came Back

Nobody spoke after the message appeared.

Daniel Hayes.

The name alone changed everything.

Marcus looked at Nia.

“Is this real?””

She stared at her phone.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice said something different.

She wanted it to be real.

Because if Daniel was alive, then the impossible had already happened once.

Maya looked at the message.

“Can you trace it?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not immediately.””

Nia looked toward the security screen.

Adrian Vale had disappeared.

Again.

“He wants us chasing him.””

Marcus nodded.

“He wants control.””

Evelyn stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He wants something else.””

“What?””

She looked at Nia.

“He wants her to remember.””

Nia felt anger rise.

“Why?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because you saw something.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Nia stepped closer.

“You always say that.””

“Because I never knew the whole truth.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Evelyn was silent.

Finally, she spoke.

“After the mission, Daniel contacted my son.””

Marcus listened.

“He said Adrian Vale had created a backup plan.””

“What kind of plan?””

“A plan where if anyone tried to expose him, Sergeant Carter would become the evidence.””

Nia felt sick.

“My life was the cover.””

“Yes.””

Maya frowned.

“But why her?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus looked at Nia.

“Because you were closest to the truth.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the photo again.

“I wasn’t the only one there.””

Marcus followed her eyes.

The other soldiers.

The missing pieces.

The hidden witnesses.

“Who else was on the team?””

Nia studied the photograph.

Two faces.

Two names.

She remembered one.

The other remained blurred.

“Daniel.””

Marcus nodded.

“And?””

Nia closed her eyes.

A name appeared.

“Captain Lena Brooks.””

Maya froze.

“What?””

Everyone looked at her.

Maya stepped back.

“That’s my mother’s name.””

Silence.

Nia turned.

“Your mother was in Silent Shield?””

Maya looked shocked.

“No.””

Then she looked at the photograph.

“She disappeared six months ago.””

Marcus stared.

Another connection.

Another missing person.

Nia looked at Maya.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“No, don’t apologize.””

She looked at the image.

“Tell me what happened.””

Nia wished she could.

But she only had fragments.

A mission.

A betrayal.

A memory erased.

Marcus walked to the main computer.

“We need Daniel.””

A message appeared.

Everyone turned.

A secure channel had opened.

Incoming video.

Marcus hesitated.

Then accepted.

The screen turned on.

A dark room.

A person sitting in the shadows.

Then the camera adjusted.

Daniel Hayes appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Nia stopped breathing.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Nia’s eyes filled.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I couldn’t stop them.””

“Stop who?””

His expression became serious.

“Adrian.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where are you?””

Daniel ignored him.

“Nia, listen carefully.””

She stared.

“The person you think betrayed you…”

A pause.

“Wasn’t the only one.””

Everyone froze.

“What does that mean?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“It means Silent Shield was never designed to find a traitor.””

He took a breath.

“It was designed to create one.””

Nia felt cold.

Daniel continued.

“They needed someone to blame.””

“And they chose me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you survived the part nobody was supposed to see.””

The screen flickered.

Nia stepped closer.

“What did I see?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You saw who gave Adrian Vale the order.””

Marcus leaned in.

“Who?””

Daniel looked away.

The connection began breaking.

Nia shouted:

“Daniel!””

His final words came through the static.

“Ask Evelyn who signed the original mission order.””

The screen went black.

Everyone turned slowly.

Toward Evelyn.

She stood frozen.

May you like

Because she already knew the question.

And she already knew the answer.
