Chapter 11: The Truth They Buried
The command center was locked down.
No reporters.
No outside communication.
No unauthorized personnel.
Only Marcus, Nia, Evelyn, and Maya remained inside.
The classified report was displayed on the main screen.
Everyone stared at it.
Especially Nia.
Her name sat at the top.
Accused.
Condemned.
Framed.
Marcus stood beside the screen.
“This report is fake.””
Nia looked at him.
“You sound certain.””
“I am.””
“Why?””
“Because I know you.””
That answer almost broke her.
After everything.
After the accusations.
After watching her entire identity being turned against her.
Someone still believed her.
Maya looked at the report.
“But if it’s fake, how did they get all the right information?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because that was the real question.
The person behind this knew everything.
Schedules.
Access codes.
Mission details.
Personal history.
Nia looked at Evelyn.
“You were part of Silent Shield.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because my company provided equipment support.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Your company had military contracts?””
“Yes.””
“And your son?””
Evelyn looked down.
“He discovered something.””
“What?””
“That the equipment being supplied was being redirected.””
Maya frowned.
“Redirected where?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Into unauthorized operations.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus understood.
“Someone was using military resources without approval.””
“Yes.””
Nia looked at the report.
“And Daniel found out.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He wanted to expose it.””
“What happened?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“He trusted the wrong person.””
Nia felt a memory return.
Daniel sitting beside her.
The two of them reviewing files.
Daniel saying:
Someone we trust is involved.
She opened her eyes.
“He knew.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“Daniel knew before the mission.””
“Who?””
Nia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
She pressed her fingers against her temple.
“There’s something there.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Don’t force it.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“I need to.””
The memory pushed forward.
A conversation.
A room.
Daniel looking at her.
Fear in his eyes.
“He said someone had access to our communications.””
Marcus listened.
“What else?””
“He said if anything happened…”
Nia stopped.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“He said I had to remember.””
Maya whispered:
“Remember what?””
Nia closed her eyes.
Then it came.
A name.
Not a face.
A name.
She opened her eyes.
“Colonel Adrian Vale.””
Marcus froze.
Evelyn went pale.
Maya looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Nia looked at him.
“You know him.””
Marcus slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Marcus took a breath.
“He was the commanding officer of Silent Shield.””
The room went silent.
Nia stared.
“My commander?””
“Yes.””
“And he was involved?””
Marcus looked away.
“That’s what we need to prove.””
Evelyn whispered:
“He’s alive.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at them.
“Daniel found evidence.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
“That Adrian Vale never left the program.””
Nia frowned.
“What program?””
Evelyn’s voice lowered.
“The one hidden beneath Silent Shield.””
Marcus looked disturbed.
“Nobody knew about that.””
“But someone did.””
The lights flickered.
Everyone stopped.
Not again.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
The security screens changed.
A new video appeared.
Live footage.
The military base entrance.
The black SUV.
And someone standing beside it.
Colonel Adrian Vale.
Alive.
Maya gasped.
“That’s him?””
Marcus stared.
“Yes.””
Nia walked closer to the screen.
Her hands shook.
Because she remembered him.
Not as a stranger.
As someone who had once congratulated her.
Someone who had once called her one of the best soldiers he had ever trained.
Then the video zoomed closer.
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
As if he knew they were watching.
His voice came through the speakers.
“Sergeant Carter.””
Nia froze.
“You spent six months looking for the truth.””
A pause.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“What question?””
Adrian smiled.
A small, controlled smile.
“Why did I let you survive?””
The feed cut.
Everyone stood frozen.
Then Nia’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time with a name.
*DANIEL HAYES.*
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*HE IS LYING ABOUT WHY I DISAPPEARED.*
