Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Footage

The evidence room was silent.

Too silent.

Captain Marcus Reed stared at the frozen frame on the monitor while the reporters outside continued shouting through the closed doors.

The name in the corner of the footage remained visible.

A simple label.

A few letters.

But enough to change the entire direction of the investigation.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Zoom in.””

The evidence officer adjusted the image.

The pixels stretched.

The letters became clearer.

Nia Carter watched Marcus’s expression carefully.

She had seen him face dangerous situations before.

She had seen him walk toward chaos without hesitation.

But she had never seen him look confused.

Not like this.

“Captain?”” Nia asked.

Marcus did not answer immediately.

His eyes stayed on the screen.

“Where did you get this card?””

Nia frowned.

“I told you.””

“No,” Marcus said quietly.

“You told me where you found it.””

He turned toward her.

“I’m asking where it came from.””

Nia looked at the memory card.

“The SUV.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Look again.””

The evidence officer enlarged the corner of the footage.

The label became sharper.

Nia stepped closer.

And then she saw it.

A marking.

A military identification code.

Her face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You recognize it?””

Nia didn’t respond.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Because the code belonged to a classified vehicle system.

A system that only a handful of people on the base had access to.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Sergeant.””

Nia looked away.

“I need to think.””

“You know something.””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Marcus noticed.

Nia immediately corrected herself.

“I know what that code means.””

“And?””

She hesitated.

“It means someone with military clearance was involved.””

The words settled between them.

Outside, the reporters were still demanding answers.

Inside, the truth was becoming more dangerous.

Marcus looked back at the footage.

“Why would someone with clearance frame you?””

Nia swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“Yet.””

Marcus studied her.

“You were investigating the crash before you were attacked.””

“Yes.””

“What were you looking for?””

Nia remained silent.

That silence told him everything.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“I found something wrong with the accident report.””

“What?””

“The timing.””

Marcus waited.

Nia took a breath.

“The official report says the SUV lost control because of mechanical failure.””

“And?””

“The damage pattern didn’t match.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re saying it was staged?””

Nia looked toward the monitor.

“I’m saying someone wanted it to look accidental.””

The door opened.

Both of them turned.

Reporter Maya Brooks stood there with a military officer behind her.

“Captain, she knows.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who let you in?””

Maya ignored the question.

Her eyes were locked on Nia.

“She knows who was in that SUV.””

Nia stiffened.

“Maya.””

The reporter stepped inside.

“I saw her reaction.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Maya lowered her microphone.

“Evelyn Cross.””

Silence.

“She recognized something on that footage.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Maya looked surprised.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why aren’t you asking her?””

Nia looked through the glass window toward the base entrance.

Evelyn was surrounded by officers.

Still elegant.

Still composed.

But no longer in control.

“Because she won’t tell us.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Then we make her.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“She almost destroyed your career.””

“I know.””

“She accused you publicly.””

“I know.””

“She tried to take the evidence.””

“I know.””

Marcus’s voice softened.

“Then why protect her?””

Nia looked at the screen.

“I’m not protecting her.””

She paused.

“I’m trying to understand why someone like Evelyn Cross is afraid.””

Before Marcus could answer, the evidence officer spoke.

“Captain.””

Everyone turned.

“There’s another file.””

Marcus walked back to the computer.

“What file?””

The officer clicked.

A hidden folder appeared.

No title.

No description.

Just one timestamp.

The same time as the crash.

04:17.

Marcus frowned.

“Open it.””

The screen went black.

Then a video began loading.

Nia stepped closer.

The first frame appeared.

Not the road.

Not the SUV.

A different angle.

A camera inside the vehicle.

Maya whispered.

“Oh my God.””

Marcus stared.

Because the footage showed something they had not expected.

Someone sitting inside the SUV before the crash.

But the face was hidden.

The video paused.

The system asked for a password.

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then at Nia.

“Can you access it?””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

The evidence officer looked nervous.

“Captain…”

“What?””

He pointed.

“The password prompt.””

Marcus stared.

Because beneath it was a single message.

A message that had been typed before the footage was locked.

*IF YOU ARE WATCHING THIS, SHE FAILED.*

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

May you like

Marcus slowly turned toward Evelyn through the glass.

And for the first time, he wondered if she was not the person they should be afraid of.
