Chapter 9: The Face Nia Forgot

The photograph shook slightly in Marcus Reed’s hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he understood what it meant.

The person in the image was not a stranger.

Not an outsider.

Not someone who had broken into the base.

Someone who belonged.

Nia watched his face.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That scared her more than anything else.

“Captain.””

He looked at the photograph again.

Then handed it to her.

Nia took it.

And the world seemed to stop.

The image showed a person standing beside the black SUV.

The face was clear.

The identity was impossible.

Her fingers went numb.

“No.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Nia.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“That’s not possible.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Nia couldn’t speak.

Because the answer was someone she trusted.

Someone she remembered.

Someone she had believed was gone.

Evelyn saw the photograph.

And she immediately sat down.

Marcus noticed.

“You know them too.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked at Nia.

Then whispered:

“Someone who should have died.””

The hallway became silent.

Marcus looked at the officer.

“Where was this taken?””

“Near the SUV storage area.””

“When?””

“Thirty minutes before the crash.””

Nia stared at the photograph.

Her mind fought against itself.

Because every instinct told her the image was wrong.

But every memory she couldn’t access told her otherwise.

Maya looked at her.

“You know this person.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“Lieutenant Daniel Hayes.””

Marcus froze.

Even he knew the name.

A decorated officer.

A soldier who had been reported killed during a classified operation.

Operation Silent Shield.

The same mission Nia couldn’t remember.

Maya looked confused.

“Wait.””

She turned to Marcus.

“You’re saying the person in the photo is a dead soldier?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The official records said Daniel Hayes died six months ago.

But the photograph said something else.

Nia looked at Evelyn.

“Why did you know?””

Evelyn looked broken.

“Because my son found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Daniel Hayes was alive.””

The words landed hard.

Marcus stepped closer.

“When?””

“Before the crash.””

“And you didn’t tell anyone?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Would you believe me?””

Marcus had no answer.

Because the truth sounded impossible.

Nia stared at the photograph.

She remembered Daniel.

Not everything.

Fragments.

A laugh.

A conversation.

A promise.

Then nothing.

She touched the image.

“He was my partner.””

Marcus nodded.

“During Silent Shield?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Nia closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

The frustration in her voice finally broke.

“I know his face. I know his name. I know I trusted him.””

She looked at Marcus.

“But there’s a part of my own life that feels like someone cut it out.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn said:

“He didn’t die.””

Nia turned.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at the photo.

“He survived.””

“How do you know?””

“Because he contacted my son.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“The night before the crash.””

The room went quiet.

“What did he say?”” Nia asked.

Evelyn looked terrified.

“He said Daniel had discovered the truth about Silent Shield.””

“What truth?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“He said the mission was not compromised.””

A pause.

“He said the mission was betrayed.””

Marcus stepped back.

By someone inside.

Everyone understood the meaning.

Maya looked at Nia.

“Your own unit?””

Nia didn’t answer.

Because she was remembering something.

A hallway.

A voice.

A hand on her shoulder.

Daniel saying:

“I’m sorry.””

She closed her eyes.

“I remember.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus moved closer.

“What?””

Nia breathed heavily.

“I remember the night of the mission.””

The room waited.

“He found me.””

“Who?””

“Daniel.””

Her voice shook.

“He told me someone was lying to us.””

Marcus asked:

“Who?””

Nia looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But I remember what happened next.””

“What?””

Nia looked at her own hands.

“They erased my memory.””

Nobody moved.

Maya whispered:

“Who did?””

Nia slowly looked up.

Her face had changed.

Not confusion anymore.

Recognition.

Fear.

Because one final memory had returned.

A voice.

A face.

A command.

And the person standing behind her.

She whispered:

“It was someone I saluted every day.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

Nia opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every light inside the hallway went out.

The base fell into darkness.

And from somewhere nearby…

May you like

a voice spoke.

“Still trying to remember, Sergeant?””
