Chapter 11: The Person Marcus Protected
I read Vanessa’s letter slowly.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I was afraid.
Every sentence felt like opening a door I could never close again.
“Nia, I know you hate me right now.””
I almost laughed.
Hate wasn’t the right word.
Hate was simple.
What I felt was confusion.
Pain.
Betrayal.
“I know you think I controlled your life because I wanted power. That isn’t true.””
I looked at the words.
For years, I had believed Vanessa’s coldness came from arrogance.
Maybe it came from fear.
But fear didn’t erase damage.
It didn’t excuse the years of silence.
The years she made decisions for me.
The years she treated me like a child.
The letter continued.
“Marcus discovered that someone was using our family’s history against us.””
Our family.
Not his.
Ours.
“He found evidence connecting Lena’s disappearance to the same person who threatened him.””
My breathing stopped.
Lena.
Twenty years.
A missing woman.
A secret passed from one generation to another.
Then:
“Marcus wanted to expose everything. I wanted him to run.””
I looked up.
Vanessa wanted him to run.
Not hide.
Not fight.
Run.
“Why?””
The word escaped my mouth.
Elijah stood beside me.
“She was scared.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Some of it.””
I felt anger rise again.
“Everyone knew something.””
He didn’t argue.
Because it was true.
The letter continued.
“But Marcus was never the kind of man who ran.””
A small, painful smile appeared on my face.
That was true.
Marcus would stand in front of a storm if he thought it protected us.
“He believed the only way to save our family was to find the person responsible.””
My fingers tightened.
“And then?””
I turned the page.
The next line was written darker.
“Then he found out the person responsible was closer than anyone imagined.””
My heart stopped.
I thought of the photograph.
The message.
The warning.
The figure in my house.
Someone close.
Someone standing beside me.
I looked at Elijah.
“Who?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
But this time, I didn’t believe him.
Before I could question him, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway stopped us.
We froze.
Elijah moved toward the window.
“It’s Vanessa.””
My body reacted before my mind did.
I ran downstairs.
The front door opened.
Vanessa stood there.
No longer wearing the controlled expression from the funeral.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
“Where were you?””
My voice was louder than I expected.
She looked at me.
“I went to fix my mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
A tear fell down her face.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because knowing the truth means someone knows you know.””
The words chilled me.
“Someone already knows.””
Vanessa looked confused.
I showed her the picture.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Oh no.””
I stepped closer.
“You know who this is.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Ava.
Then at me.
Then closed her eyes.
“My brother.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa sat down.
“My older brother.””
The name meant nothing.
Because she had never told me she had one.
“He was the reason Lena disappeared.””
I felt dizzy.
“What was his name?””
Vanessa’s voice became barely audible.
“Calvin.””
Elijah suddenly stepped backward.
I noticed.
“You know him.””
Elijah looked terrified.
“I thought he was dead.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked at Elijah.
“You knew.””
He swallowed.
“I knew the name.””
“And you never told her?””
“I didn’t know he was alive.””
My head spun.
Too many secrets.
Too many people connected.
Then Vanessa reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small recorder.
“Marcus left this with me.””
My eyes widened.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because he told me not to unless Calvin returned.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
Vanessa pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Marcus’s voice.
My husband’s voice.
Alive.
My knees almost gave out.
“Nia, if you’re hearing this, then something happened that I prayed never would.””
I covered my mouth.
Ava whispered:
“Daddy.””
Marcus continued.
“First, I need you to forgive Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
She was crying.
“Because she wasn’t hiding the truth from you.””
A pause.
“She was hiding you from him.””
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“Calvin knows what happened to Lena. He knows what happened to me. And now he knows about Ava.””
My blood froze.
Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.
“The person who sent you those messages is not trying to scare you.””
A pause.
“They’re trying to make you distrust the only people who can protect you.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Then a sound came from outside.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
The back door was open.
A man stood in the darkness.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
May you like
Vanessa whispered his name.
“Calvin.””
