Chapter 12: The Brother Who Returned

Nobody moved.

The man standing in the doorway looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.

That was the terrifying part.

Monsters were supposed to look dangerous.

Calvin looked normal.

A man in his sixties.

Gray hair.

Simple jacket.

A calm expression.

The kind of person you would pass in a grocery store and never remember.

But Vanessa looked at him like she was looking at twenty years of nightmares.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Calvin smiled.

“You always say that.””

His voice was gentle.

Almost kind.

That made it worse.

Ava moved behind me.

I wrapped an arm around her.

Calvin noticed.

His eyes moved to her.

“So this is Marcus’s little girl.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t look at her.””

His smile faded slightly.

“Nia.””

The fact that he knew my name made my skin crawl.

“How do you know me?””

He tilted his head.

“Marcus talked about you often.””

I felt anger rise.

“You knew my husband?””

“Better than most.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Calvin looked at him.

“And you were supposed to keep quiet.””

The room changed.

Whatever history existed between them was old.

And painful.

I looked at Elijah.

“You knew him.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I knew who he was.””

Calvin smiled.

“Everyone always says that.””

His eyes moved around the room.

“Then they act surprised when the past returns.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Leave my daughter alone.””

Calvin looked at her.

“Your daughter?””

A cold smile appeared.

“You mean the daughter you kept away from the truth?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You took Lena from us.””

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, something dark appeared in his eyes.

“You still believe that story?””

My heart raced.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Everyone looked at me.

I didn’t care anymore.

I needed the truth.

Calvin looked at me.

“You really are Marcus’s wife.””

“What does that mean?””

“He always believed questions were stronger than fear.””

He stepped inside.

“I respected that about him.””

“You killed him.””

It wasn’t a question.

The room went silent.

Calvin looked almost offended.

“No.””

I stared.

“Then why are you here?””

He looked at the recorder.

“Because Marcus made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted the wrong person.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then Elijah.

Then back to Calvin.

“You’re lying.””

Calvin smiled.

“Are you sure?””

The question bothered me.

Because doubt was exactly what Marcus warned about.

Don’t trust the person who brings answers too easily.

Calvin walked toward the table.

He placed a folder down.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“I didn’t come to hurt you.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

He looked at Ava.

“I came because she deserves the truth.””

Ava held my hand tighter.

“What truth?””

Calvin opened the folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

I stared.

Then my entire body went cold.

The name on it wasn’t Ava’s.

It was mine.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

Vanessa immediately grabbed the folder.

“No.””

Calvin smiled.

“Tell her.””

Vanessa looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Tell me what?””

She couldn’t speak.

I turned toward Calvin.

“What are you showing me?””

He leaned closer.

“The truth your mother and Marcus hid.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

Calvin pointed to the document.

“Nia, Marcus wasn’t protecting Ava from me.””

A pause.

“He was protecting Ava from the truth about you.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked devastated.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Devastated.

Because whatever was on that paper…

Whatever Marcus discovered…

It was about me.

My life.

My identity.

My family.

Calvin picked up the folder.

And whispered:

“Your entire life is built on a lie.””

Then the lights in the house went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

May you like

And the last thing I heard was Vanessa screaming:

“Calvin, don’t tell her!””
