Chapter 6: The Secret Between Mother and Daughter

The chapel emptied within minutes.

Not because the funeral was over.

Because everyone suddenly felt like they were standing too close to something dangerous.

The mourners left quietly, avoiding eye contact.

Nobody wanted to be the last person in the room.

Nobody wanted to be remembered as someone who knew.

Soon, only four people remained.

Me.

Ava.

Vanessa.

Elijah.

And Marcus.

The man lying silently in the coffin.

I looked at my husband and wondered how many secrets he had carried while sleeping beside me.

How many times had he looked at me and decided not to tell me the truth?

My hands shook as I held the phone.

The message was still there.

Ask Vanessa why Marcus was afraid of her.

I looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Nia…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But firm.

“You’re going to answer me.””

She sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked older.

Not fifty-eight.

Older.

Like she had been carrying a weight nobody else could see.

“I never wanted this.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She looked at Marcus.

“He was a good man.””

My anger rose.

“Stop.””

She looked at me.

“Stop talking about how good he was.””

I wiped my tears.

“I know how good he was.””

Ava watched us silently.

I lowered my voice.

“What I don’t know is why my husband was afraid.””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“He wasn’t afraid of me.””

I held up my phone.

“Then why did someone say he was?””

She didn’t answer.

Elijah moved closer.

“Vanessa, it’s time.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t.””

“You promised him.””

The room went quiet.

I turned.

“What promise?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I promised Marcus I would protect you.””

My heart sank.

“Then why did you spend years hurting me?””

Her eyes opened.

And there it was.

The pain she had hidden behind control.

“Because I thought keeping you away was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know what Marcus discovered.””

“What did he discover?””

Vanessa looked at Ava.

Then at me.

“Your husband found out someone inside our family was lying.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

A tear fell from her eye.

“I don’t know.””

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“But Marcus thought he did.””

Elijah looked away.

I noticed.

“Wait.””

I pointed at him.

“You know something.””

He stayed silent.

“Tell me.””

He finally spoke.

“Marcus found financial records.””

“Of what?””

“A company account.””

“Whose?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

My mother looked down.

I felt sick.

“Mom?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Mine.””

The word hit the room like a gunshot.

Ava grabbed my hand.

I stared at the woman who raised me.

The woman who had always told me family comes first.

“You had secret accounts?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“Then what was it?””

“I can’t explain everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course you can’t.””

She stood.

“I was trying to protect Marcus.””

“From what?””

She looked toward the coffin.

“From the same person who wanted him silent.””

A cold silence followed.

Elijah stepped forward.

“Nia, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

“This was found with Marcus’s things.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“A final note.””

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

“Because Marcus said only after you saw the USB.””

I took the envelope.

My hands trembled.

Inside was another piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

But this one wasn’t written to me.

It was written to Ava.

My daughter’s name was at the top.

I read the words.

And the world seemed to disappear.

“If you are reading this, it means Mommy finally knows Grandma wasn’t the enemy.””

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

Then I read the next line.

And my blood turned cold.

“Because the person you should fear is the one who has been standing beside you all along.””

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Everyone in the room was silent.

Except Ava.

She was staring toward the chapel entrance.

“Mommy…”

I followed her gaze.

The doors were open.

Someone had been standing there.

Listening.

And on the floor beside the doorway was a fresh envelope.

With my name written on it.

May you like

But this time…

The handwriting wasn’t Marcus’s. :::
